The Zhaoyao site is situated on the central terrace in a basin 20km northeast of the seat of Wu'an County, and was excavated in the autumn of 1960, altogether in an area of nearly 600 sq m. There were revealed 23 ash-pits, 1 pottery-retaking klin, 2 workshops of stone tools and 22 tombs(19 belonging to the Shang period and three undatable), with more than 500 objects brought to light. The cultural deposits consist of remains of the Yangshao, Shang and Western Zhou periods.
The Yangshao culture remains can be divided into two layers, the lower layer contains mainly pottery of red clay ware, most of which is plain, and the painted vessels bear a variety of motifs. The commonly-seen forms include the bowl, basin, jar, small-mouthed bottle, ding tripod and vessel support, and no small-mouthed longnecked bottles occur in the assemblage. The stone tools are mainly chipped and feature the large-sized axe, small-sized spade and disc-shaped implement. In the upper layer, red clay ware continues to be the main pottery, grey ware increases, black ware occurs in a small amount, and painted decorations are less varied. Among the pottery forms, apart from those commonly seen in the upper layer, there are the bottle with a small mouth and a long neck, stove, zeng steamer, cup, etc. The stone implements are chiefly polished and feature large-sized spades and small-sized axes, with the sickle and knife occuring as new types. Despite these differences, the two layers belong to:he same Hougang variant in cukural caracter; and their date can be inferred to be ca 4000 bp.
The Shang remains fall into three layers. In cultural aspect, the lower layer is similar to the lower stratum of Erligang, Zhengzhou, the middle layer to upper stratum of Erligang and the lower stratum of Caoyanzhuang, Xingtai, and the upper layer to the remains of the middle and late Shang discovered at the People Park, Zhengzhou; therefore, they can be dated the early, middle and late Shang period respectively. The 19 Shang Tombs belong to the late stage of the Shang.
The Western Zhou remains consist only of 4 ash-pits and a small number of potshards, stone tools, etc.
