摘要
西方学术界一般认为《艰难时世》对于“阶级情节”和“工业主题”的处理是一个败笔。本文认为 ,无论是书中的银行失窃事件 ,还是露易莎与赫德豪斯之间的纠葛 ,都不是伊格尔顿等人所谓的“传奇小说的俗套”,而是“阶级情节”的一种延续 ,也跟“工业主题”有着千丝万缕的联系。换言之 ,小说中体现工业主题的两条情节主线——反资本主义情节和反功利主义情节——始终形成了互动 ,因而小说的艺术结构基本上是匀称的。
The way in which the 'class plot' and the 'industrial theme' are handled in Hard Times is often considered to be a failure. The present paper argues that neither the robbery at the Bank, nor Louisa's entanglement with Harthouse, belongs to 'the stock kind of romantic fiction' as claimed by Terry Eagleton and the like. Instead, they constitute a continuation of the 'class plot' and form an intricate relationship with the 'industrial theme'. In other words, the two major threads that reflect the novel's industrial theme the anti capitalism plot and the anti Utilitarianism plot interact with each other from the beginning to the end, thus ensuring the symmetry of the novel's artistic structure.
