Based on conversation analysis theory,this study explored how teachers and students used discourse markers in foreign language classrooms and how these markers affect classroom interaction.The results showed that teachers use different discourse markers in different teaching stages such as lead-in,presentation,practice and summary to make their teaching more organized and clearer.However,students used these markers less often,and their expressions are often less coherent.Based on these findings,the study suggests teaching strategies for teachers and learning strategies for students to improve how they use discourse markers.This can help make foreign language teaching more effective and interactive. 展开更多

Purpose Artificial intelligence(AI)is developing across the world in every domain,such as finance,manufacturing,entertainment,agriculture,retail,healthcare,and law.Its use in the education sector has exponentially increased.The present global survey explored the utilization of AI among academicians in audiology and speech-language therapy(ASLT)and their willingness to use AI tools in their academic work.Method This study used a cross-sectional survey design.One hundred and six ASLT academicians participated in the survey(February 2024 to April 2024).The questionnaire contains 18 items,which included a five-point rating scale,yes-no,and open-ended questions.Descriptive statistics were used for analysis.Results Most of the participants were from Asia and North America,followed by Africa.Nearly sixty-eight percent of the academicians used AI tools in their practice.The major concerns reported by the participants were the authenticity of the data,security,the addition of irrelevant information,and incorrect citations.The participants also mentioned that the frequent use of AI tools can reduce a person’s ability to devise novel ideas.AI tools such as ChatGPT,Canva,Grammarly AI,Mentimeter,QuillBot,ResearchRabbit,and Scribd were reported by participants.Conclusions The present study highlights the use of AI tools among ASLT academicians.However,only a few academicians have prior experience in AI courses.This indicates the pressing need for training concerning the appropriate use of AI in academia and support from universities.Furthermore,AI should be incorporated into academia with appropriate monitoring and ethical considerations. 展开更多

Control Flow Graphs(CFGs)are essential for understanding the execution and data flow within software,serving as foundational structures in program analysis.Traditional CFG construction methods,such as bytecode analysis and Abstract Syntax Trees(ASTs),often face challenges due to the complex syntax of programming languages like Java and Python.This paper introduces a novel approach that leverages Large Language Models(LLMs)to generate CFGs through a methodical Chain of Thought(CoT)process.By employing CoT,the proposed approach systematically interprets code semantics directly from natural language,enhancing the adaptability across various programming languages and simplifying the CFG construction process.By implementing a modular AI chain strategy that adheres to the single responsibility principle,our approach breaks down CFG generation into distinct,manageable steps handled by separate AI and non-AI units,which can significantly improve the precision and coverage of CFG nodes and edges.The experiments with 245 Java and 281 Python code snippets from Stack Overflow demonstrate that our method achieves efficient performance on different programming languages and exhibits strong robustness. 展开更多

With the increasing use of technology in language education,understanding the benefits and barriers of mobile-assisted language learning(MALL)is crucial for effective integration.Qualitative data were collected through interviews among Chinese English teachers in universities.Thematic analysis was employed to identify themes.The findings reveal that Chinese English teachers perceive MALL to offer benefits like convenience,effectiveness,efficiency,engagement,personalization,and resource richness.However,several barriers were identified,including low teacher ability,student device misuse,lack of institutional support,technical limitations,health concerns,and time constraints.These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the factors influencing the adoption of MALL in Chinese universities and have implications for language teaching practice. 展开更多

It has been scientifically proved that as little as 20 milligrams of arsenic may be life-threatening. It attacks delicate internal organs of the body, thereby, leading to health disorders and eventual death. On the one hand, this paper is set out to prove that the English language exerts similar killing effects on the Igbo language. The objective of this study is to shed light on what the literature on English Language Teaching(ELT)job advertisements reveals about the ELT profession.For this aim,the existing nine articles are chosen as the focal literature and content-analyzed.The results point to some facts about ELT:the native speakerism ideology persists in ELT job advertisements;it includes multifaceted discrimination against both non-native and non-Anglophone native English speaker teachers(NESTs);cost-effective strategies are utilized by recruiters to hire young NESTs;different marketing strategies are employed to attract NESTs and to earn the prestige associated with hiring them;and advertising discourse is a way to institutionalization and entrenchment of discrimination.The fallacies explored also concern ELT as an adventure full of travel and pleasure,the dominance of supply-demand and preference principles,viewing NESTs as ideal teachers who promise fun and effortless language learning;and the fallacy that native status compensates for the lack of qualification and experience.Each fact and fallacy is problematized and ways to combat discrimination are suggested.Also,implications of the study for various stakeholders in the ELT circle including the NESTs,NNESTs,and recruiting agencies are discussed. 展开更多

Learner autonomy stands on the top priorities of scholars due to its pivotal role in fostering student-centered learning methods. It empowers the learners to be in charge of their learning process and be the center of attention in language learning education. For this purpose, different AI tools were used and implemented in pedagogy to narrow the divide in promoting learning/teaching approaches. This study aims to gauge the impact of using LLM-ChatGPT to teach EFL learners the present simple tense autonomously via providing automated feedback, and chances for regular drillings without over reliance on teacher. It also aims to investigate the EFL learners’ perception of using LLM-ChatGPT as a reinforcement approach to learner autonomy. A cohort comprising 50 EFL learners would participate in the study and a between subject design method using control and experimental groups would be implemented. The findings of the study indicated that learners who were taught present simple tense’s rule through using LLM-ChatGPT application, with less teacher’s dominance, scored grades similar to those who were taught the same tense’s rule by the teacher (sage on the stage approach). This substantiates the idea that LLM-Chat GPT acts a role akin to teachers in teaching grammatical rules. Moreover, the learners felt that LLM-ChatGPT application had a positive impact on fostering autonomous learning. 展开更多

Recent research has confirmed the predictive effect of general foreign language(FL) achievement on Foreign Language Enjoyment(FLE) and Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety(FLCA).However,few studies have examined the effect of domain-specific language achievement in shaping FL learning emotions.The present study thus aims to examine how FLE and FLCA are linked to overall FL achievement and self-perceived achievement in six different domains across listening,speaking,reading,writing,vocabulary,and grammar.A total of 1,415 Chinese senior secondary students participated in the questionnaire survey.Regression analyses showed that 1) both FLE and FLCA were predicted more by self-perceived general English proficiency,while less by actual English achievement;2) perceptions of speaking and grammar competence were significant predictors of both emotions;3) perceived reading competence predicted FLE significantly but not FLCA;and that 4) perceptions of listening,writing,and vocabulary competence predicted neither FLE nor FLCA.The implication is that domain-specificity should be taken into consideration in future explorations of FL emotions. 展开更多

A well-recognized fact is that addressing the impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities and minority groups remains a central focus toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,specifically Goals 11 and 13.Approaches for effective adaptation to climate change through national and local efforts fundamentally aim to create environmentally sustainable,socially inclusive,and economically vibrant communities.This paper associates the impacts of climate change to the preservation of threatened minority languages in semi-arid areas in Northern Ghana.This review relies on primary and secondary sources on climate-induced migration,minority languages,and threats of language loss through a keyword search followed by rigorous content analysis.The study confirms that forced displacement due to harsh climatic and other environmental conditions is currently occurring in the upper regions(Upper East and Upper West Regions)of Ghana with minority linguistic groups being forced to migrate to the southern part of the country,where their culture and language are threatened due to large linguistic groups.The literature well establishes the north-south mobility with various debates on its root causes.However,the phenomenon is understudied along with the lack of specific national strategies for addressing it and the associated language loss.Therefore,the need emerges for further studies to enhance the current understanding of the phenomenon to inform policy interventions and protect minority languages threatened by climate-induced migration.The focus on an understudied subject and geographic scope makes the findings extremely relevant for the expansion of knowledge on internal migration in the context of climate change in Northern Ghana. 展开更多
