Parkinson's disease(PD)is one of the world's fastest-increasing neurological diseases,with no therapy currently available due to its complex pathophysiology.In recent years,it has been found that dietary supplementation with fish oil can improve PD.However,studies mainly focused on ameliorating effects of docosahexaenoic acid(22:6n-3,DHA)in fish oil,rather than eicosapentaenoic acid(C20:5n-3,EPA).In this study,a PD model in C57BL/6 mice were established by intraperitoneal injection of 1-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine(MPTP),and the effects of different molecular forms of EPA on PD were investigated by administrated with different forms of EPA,such as EPA-triglyceride(EPA-TG),EPA-ethyl esters(EPA-EE),EPA-free fatty acid(EPAFFA),EPA-phosphatidylcholine(EPA-PC)and EPA-phosphatidylethanolamine(EPA-PE).The results showed that phospholipid-bound EPA were superior to other molecular forms in ameliorating PD symptoms.Mechanically,various EPA molecular forms(EPA-PE,EPA-PC,EPA-TG,EPA-EE,EPA-FFA)attenuated PD by inhibiting ferroptosis.EPA-PE inhibited ferroptosis most significantly via regulating the glutathione metabolism pathway.EPA-PC exerted its effects mainly through the p53/GPX4 pathway.EPA-PE,EPA-TG,EPA-EE and EPA-FFA inhibited the Fenton reaction.EPA-EE,EPA-TG and EPA-FFA inhibited membrane lipid peroxidation.This study provides a reference for the prevention and improvement of neurodegenerative diseases,as well as a theoretical basis for the research and development of EPA-functional foods. 展开更多

Influence of Lactobacillus plantarum supplemented diet on growth response,gut morphometry and microbial profile in gut of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings

Objective:To evaluate the influence of dietary inclusions of Lactobacillus plantarum(L.plantarum)on growth response,gut morphometry and intestinal microbial profile of Clarias gariepinus(C.gariepinus)fingerlings was carried out using a total of 150 C.gariepinus fingerlings(2.35±0.48 g/fish)by selecting at random into five treatments groups of 10 fish in 3 three replicates each.Methods:L.plantarum isolated from corn slurry was cultured using standard measures.Five isonitrogenous diets were prepared at 35%crude protein(T_(0),T_(1),T2,T_(3)and T_(4))with L.plantarum at inclusion rate of 0.0%,0.5%,1.0%,1.5%and 2.0%respectively.The fish were fed at 5%body weight per day for 12 weeks twice daily.Results:T_(4)recorded the highest mean weight gain and specific growth rate while the lowest was obtained in T_(1).T_(4)(1.97)when compared with other treatments had marginally lower feed conversion ratio.Absorptive area was most significantly higher in T_(3)and T_(4)group when compared to the control(T_(0))and other lower dietary probiotic inclusion groups.Cryptal depth was highest in T_(4)with significant difference which also gave the maximum enterobacteriaceae count while T_(0)recorded the least count.Conclusions:From these indications,L.plantarum fortified diets may enhance the growth of cultured C.gariepinus fingerlings at 2.0%inclusion rate as it was observed to improve body weight gain,feed conversion ratio with increment in the absorptive area and the microbial count in the gut. 展开更多

Deep knowledge of the microstructure and physicochemical properties of polymeric food systems,such as honey powders(HP)and coconut sugars(CS),has practical importance for industry and end users.This study investigated the effect of polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP)addition on microstructure,roughness,glass transition,α-relaxation temperatures and structural strength(S)of anhydrous complex carbohydrates mixtures.The addition of PVP slightly increased the glass transition andα-relaxation temperature for HP and CS systems as high molecular weight components.Systems with PVP addition showed“stronger”behaviour according to the S approach.Polarized light,scanning electron and atomic force microscopies showed slight differences in transparency and shapes between controls and systems with PVP addition.Surface morphological changes and roughness were investigated in this study to provide insight into HP and CS particles’structural changes.Moreover,S-involved structural diagrams were built to determine S parameters for controlling the structural transformation of HP and CS systems with and without PVP addition.The results obtained in this work provide new information on polymer-carbohydrate interactions in complex food systems and structural transformations during their production and storage. 展开更多
