The...This paper investigates to what extent and why the key Action 1 of the Erasmus+ programme, namely learning mobility of individuals, can be considered a soft power’s instrument on European neighbourhood countries. The core assumption is that due to people-to-people contact, Erasmus participants are most likely to become EU informal ambassadors, in the sense that they become carriers of EU soft power leading to changes in cultural and social perceptions. However, what will the place of Erasmus+ be in the ongoing debate on international cultural relations’ strategy? Erasmus+ can play a major role in this new strategy considering the huge growth of mobility flows between EU and ENP countries, since the new programme was launched. Moreover, EU institutions are looking for new strategic tools of public diplomacy. Have they realised that the external dimension of Erasmus+ lends itself to being one of these? Therefore, the topic of this work is of high interest because it is closely related to the debate about both the means and the ends of the EU external policy. For the sake of this research, three case studies, from different geographical regions neighbouring the EU, have been chosen: Tunisia, Ukraine, and Georgia. A comparison among these three countries will reveal under which conditions Erasmus+ can be considered a soft power’s instrument. Hence, the identification of conditions applicable to all EU partner countries in order to evaluate whether the EU can spread its soft power through Erasmus+, represents the paper’s added value which opens new avenues for further research on the topic.展开更多

Upfront resection is becoming a rarer indication for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma,as biologic behavior and natural history of the disease has boosted indications for neoadjuvant treatments.Jaundice,gastric outlet ...Upfront resection is becoming a rarer indication for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma,as biologic behavior and natural history of the disease has boosted indications for neoadjuvant treatments.Jaundice,gastric outlet obstruction and acute cholecystitis can frequently complicate this window of opportunity,resulting in potentially deleterious chemotherapy discontinuation,whose resumption relies on effective,prompt and long-lasting management of these complications.Although therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound(t-EUS)can potentially offer some advantages over comparators,its use in potentially resectable patients is primal and has unfairly been restricted for fear of potential technical difficulties during subsequent surgery.This is a narrative review of available evidence regarding EUS-guided choledochoduodenostomy,gastrojejunostomy and gallbladder drainage in the bridge-to-surgery scenario.Proof-ofconcept evidence suggests no influence of t-EUS procedures on outcomes of eventual subsequent surgery.Moreover,the very high efficacy-invasiveness ratio over comparators in managing pancreatic cancer-related symptoms or complications can provide a powerful weapon against chemotherapy discontinuation,potentially resulting in higher subsequent resectability.Available evidence is discussed in this short paper,together with technical notes that might be useful for endoscopists and surgeons operating in this scenario.No published evidence supports restricting t-EUS in potential surgical candidates,especially in the setting of pancreatic cancer patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy.Bridge-to-surgery tEUS deserves further prospective evaluation.展开更多

The success of Density Functional Theory(DFT)is partly due to that of simple approximations,such as the Local Density Approximation(LDA),which uses results of a model,the homogeneous electron gas,to simulate exchange-...The success of Density Functional Theory(DFT)is partly due to that of simple approximations,such as the Local Density Approximation(LDA),which uses results of a model,the homogeneous electron gas,to simulate exchange-correlation effects in real materials.We turn this intuitive approximation into a general and in principle exact theory by introducing the concept of a connector:a prescription how to use results of a model system in order to simulate a given quantity in a real system.In this framework,the LDA can be understood as one particular approximation for a connector that is designed to link the exchange-correlation potentials in the real material to that of the model.Formulating the in principle exact connector equations allows us to go beyond the LDA in a systematic way.Moreover,connector theory is not bound to DFT,and it suggests approximations also for other functionals and other observables.We explain why this very general approach is indeed a convenient starting point for approximations.We illustrate our purposes with simple but pertinent examples.展开更多
