Objectives:The climate crisis demands urgent action from all sectors of society,including young people in higher education.While previous research has explored individual and contextual predictors of pro-environmental...Objectives:The climate crisis demands urgent action from all sectors of society,including young people in higher education.While previous research has explored individual and contextual predictors of pro-environmental behaviour(PEB),the contribution of Positive Youth Development(PYD)remains underexplored.This study investigates the relationship between PYD dimensions(Competence,Confidence,Connection,Character,and Caring)and two environmental outcomes:environmental habits and climate change awareness,considering gender differences.Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 1779 students from 10 universities in Andalusia(Spain).Data were collected through an online survey assessing PYD indicators,PEB,and sociodemographic variables.Descriptive statistics,t-tests,correlation analyses,and multiple mediation models were performed.Results:Descriptive analyses indicated moderate levels of PYD dimensions and PEB across the sample.Among the 5 Cs,Caring had a positive association with environmental habits(r 0.22,p 0.001)and climate change awareness(r=<=0.30,p 0.001).Character also had a positive effect on both environmental habits(r 0.23,p 0.001)and climate<=<change awareness(r 0.30,p 0.001).Competence and Confidence were not significantly associated,and Connection=<demonstrated limited predictive value,potentially influenced by contextual or social factors.Gender differences were also identified,with women showing higher scores in Character(d 0.29,p 0.001),Caring(d 0.63,p 0.001),=<=<environmental habits(d 0.20,p 0.001)and climate change awareness(d 0.40,p 0.001),while men scored higher in=<=<Competence(d 0.57,p 0.001)and Confidence(d 0.22,p 0.001).Mediation analyses indicated that the association=<=<between gender and environmental habits was totally explained by Character(β95%CI:and=-0.02;-0.04;-0.01)Caring(β95%CI:Furthermore,the relationship between gender and climate change awareness=-0.04;-0.05,-0.02).was partially mediated by Character(β95%CI:and Caring(β95%CI:=-0.03;-0.05;-0.02)=-0.05;-0.07,-0.03).Conclusions:Females showed more environmental habits and climate change awareness than males,because of their greater scores in both Caring and Character dimensions of PYD.These findings highlight the importance of the PYD for promoting PEB and engaged citizens among young adults.Gender-sensitive and interdisciplinary interventions,such as environmental volunteering and community-based programmes,are recommended for university contexts to enhance sustainable development behaviours and values.展开更多
Objectives:There is a growing global concern regarding mental health and well-being in educational settings,especially in contexts of socio-educational exclusion.Active educational interventions offer an effective app...Objectives:There is a growing global concern regarding mental health and well-being in educational settings,especially in contexts of socio-educational exclusion.Active educational interventions offer an effective approach to enhance students’mental health and personal and social well-being.This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a psychosocial intervention program based on the Sports Education model(SEM)on subjective well-being(positive and negative affect)and externalizing problems(aggressiveness,hyperactivity,and behavioral problems)in youth students from a highly vulnerable socio-cultural community belonging to an ethnic minority with significant socio-educational support needs associated with socio-educational exclusion.Methods:The intervention took place during school hours,consisting of 17 sessions of 45 min each,at a publicly owned school serving disadvantaged communities.The ethnic minority sample,comprising all preadolescent students,consisted of 28 participants(13 males and 15 females)aged 10 to 15(Mean=10.19;SD=1.39),all of whom were part of the experimental group.The present study employed a single-group pre-test/post-test design due to the unique conditions of the school.Results:Subjective well-being was assessed using the PANAS Positive and Negative Affect Scale for Children and Adolescents(PANASN),while the teacher version of the Behavior Assessment System for Children(BASC-2;TRS)was employed to evaluate externalizing problems.The results suggested significant improvements in subjective well-being,with a significant increase in positive affect(d=0.80)and a significant decrease in negative affect(d=1.14),both exhibiting large effect sizes.Similarly,aggressiveness(d=0.62)and behavioral problems(d=0.79)showed significant reductions,both reflecting medium effect sizes.Conclusions:These findings suggest the suitability and effectiveness of this Sports Education program for promoting socio-affective improvements in students from socio-culturally disadvantaged backgrounds and academic environments.SEM-based programs are recommended,as they support mental health and social well-being,offer evidence-based benefits for teachers,and foster holistic student development.展开更多

Adolescence is a critical time for the cultivation of life purpose,also known as a meaningful long-term aim focused on contribution to others.Youth with purpose,especially marginalized youth,report a number of positiv...Adolescence is a critical time for the cultivation of life purpose,also known as a meaningful long-term aim focused on contribution to others.Youth with purpose,especially marginalized youth,report a number of positive outcomes.Relationships with caring adults appear to be particularly helpful in guiding young people on their path to purpose,but little work has focused specifically on the role of mothers.This qualitative study,approved by a Institutional Review Board,examines how twenty adolescents from marginalized communities describe their sense of purpose and its relationship to their caregivers.The sample size was determined based on saturation,a process in qualitative research when the researchers begin to observe redundancy in the data.Through content analysis,a major theme emerged:the role of mothers and their impact on purpose development on their children.Results showed that mothers helped their adolescents develop their sense of purpose through serving as a sense of inspiration,providing the adolescents with support,sparking a desire for the adolescents to make their mothers proud,and through the mothers and adolescents in engaging in conversations about one’s future.展开更多
Purpose Sled towing has been shown to be an effective method to enhance the physical qualities in youth athletes.The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a 6-week sled towing intervention on muscular streng...Purpose Sled towing has been shown to be an effective method to enhance the physical qualities in youth athletes.The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a 6-week sled towing intervention on muscular strength,speed and power in elite youth soccer players of differing maturity status.Method Seventy-three male elite youth soccer players aged 12-18 years(Pre-Peak Height Velocity[PHV]n = 25;Circa-PHV n = 24;Post-PHV n = 24)from one professional soccer academy participated in this study.Sprint assessments(10 m and 30 m),countermovement jump and isometric mid-thigh pull were undertaken before(T1)and after(T2)a 6-week intervention.The training intervention consisted of 6 weeks(2xper week,10 sprints over 20 m distance)of resisted sled towing(linear progression 10%-30%of body mass)during the competitive season.Bayesian regression models analysed differences between T1 and T2 within each maturity group.Results There were minimal changes in strength,speed and power(P=0.35-0.80)for each maturity group across the 6-week intervention.Where there were changes with greater certainty,they are unlikely to represent real effect due to higher regres-sion to the mean(RTM).Conclusion It appears that a 6-week sled towing training programme with loadings of 10%-30%body mass only maintains physical qualities in elite youth soccer players pre-,circa-,and post-PHV.Further research is required to determine the effectiveness of this training method in long-term athletic development programmes.展开更多
Objectives:Positive Youth Development is an evidence-based,holistic approach that underlines adolescents’strengths,competence,and interests instead of deficits,thus promoting psychosocial well-being in adolescents.Th...Objectives:Positive Youth Development is an evidence-based,holistic approach that underlines adolescents’strengths,competence,and interests instead of deficits,thus promoting psychosocial well-being in adolescents.This study aims to explore adolescents’perceived impacts of the Finnish service-learning program“Gutsy Go”,which is based on a Positive Youth Development approach.Methods:The program educates 8th-grade comprehensive school students to perform good deeds in their communities and enhances adolescents’psychosocial well-being.Focus group interviews were conducted two to three weeks after the program week with 61 program participants.The data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis.Results:Four broad themes of the perceived impacts of the program were derived from the data:emotional impacts,impacts on competence,impacts within the group,and lessons learned for future use.Conclusions:The perceived impacts of the Gutsy Go program in this study were mostly positive and related to adolescents’psychosocial well-being.More studies are needed regarding the underlying mechanisms between participation in the program and the perceived impacts.展开更多
