We designed and conducted tests to compare the shear strength and adhesion performance of PUR with polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) adhesive on block-shear specimens constructed of oriental beech (Fagus orientalis L.), fir (Abies alba Mill.), poplar (Populus deltoides Bartr.), white oak (Quercus alba L.), sycamore (Platanus orientalis L.) and white walnut (Juglans cinerea L.). The values of the percentage of wood failure were also determined in specimens constructed with each adhesive. The highest shear strength values of both adhesives were obtained in specimens constructed of beech, while the lowest shear strength values were obtained in fir and poplar specimens. Average shear strength of the PUR adhesive was 16.5% higher than that of the PVAc adhesive. Specimens constructed of fir, poplar and sycamore were characterised by the highest percentages of wood failure, whereas the lowest average percentages of wood failure were obtained in beech and oak specimens. With the exception of oak specimens, there was no statistically significant difference between percentage of wood failure among the PUR and PVAc adhesives. Generally, the PUR adhesive showed an acceptable adhesion performance on wood materials used in our study.展开更多

Compared with water-soluble acrylic resin, the phase inversion of 2K-WPU occurs at lower water content. It is indicated by TEM that 2K-WPU parti-cles show a core-shell structure, in which HDI biuret is encapsulated by hydrophilic acrylic resin. 2K-WPU emulsion with HDI biuret has larger particle size and narrower distribution index, while for 2K-WPU emulsion with HDI iso-cyanurate, the latex not only has large particle size, but also has two-peak distribution. FTIR shows that the reaction be-tween HDI biuret and acrylic resin can complete in 12h. In addition, studies on effect of composition of acrylic resin on performance of 2K-WPU show that narrowing the polar difference between water-soluble acrylic resin and HDI biuret and improving the miscibility of two components are the key to prepare the transparent and high gloss films with high crosslinking density.展开更多

Pre- or post-crosslinking is another method used to manufacture a conventional vinyl-based homopolymers or copolymers system with improved water resistance. Vinyl neodecanoate (VeoVa), N-methylolacrylamide (NMA), Methacrylamide, methacrylic acid (MAA), and other self-crosslinking comonomers are typically inserted to produce highly water-resistant vinyl based homopolymers or copolymers. Additionally, organic crosslinkers like glyoxal, glutaraldehyde, citric acid, tartaric acid, and the like, as well as inorganic crosslinkers like acidic metal salts like aluminium chloride, aluminium nitrate, boric acid, and the like, can be used to prepare the highly water-resistant vinyl based homopolymers or copolymers. It is also possible to combine the self-crosslinking comonomers with the organic crosslinkers. Recently, a different hybrid chemistry has been developed that improves lap shear strength, has outstanding water resistance, good durability, and doesn’t require any additional crosslinker agents. Two distinct polymers were combined to develop hybrid polymers. They usually involve mixing an organic polymer with a polymer. There are many capping agents that are used for polyurethanes to produce acrylics that are capped with polyurethane and used as an oligomer in PVAc wood glue. Here, in this paper, we reviewed the different hybrid chemistry based on polyurethane chemistry for wood bonding applications.展开更多

The adhesive force of single point contact - sapphire ball to flat polyurethane did not vary with the normal force. With rough surface contact, which was assumed to be a great number of point contacts, the adhesive force increased logarithmically with the normal force. Under negative normal force adhesive state, the tangential force (more than hundred mN) were much larger than the negative normal force (several mN) and increased with the linear decrease of negative normal force. The results reveal why the gecko's toe must slide slightly on the target surface when it makes contact on a surface and suggest how a biomimetic gecko foot might be designed.展开更多

The experiments were carried out to study the effects of material properties (elastic modulus EM and chemical components CC) and contact geometry (surface roughness, connecting stiffness) on their adhesive properties. The adhesion of the lowest EM samples is the highest (15 kPa) and the surface roughness has strong effects on adhesion and the adhesion decreases to 1.5 kPa for the highest EM samples. The adhesive forces are heavily influenced by CC of polyurethane. Surface roughness heavily influences the adhesion and when the roughness is higher than R a 0.3 μm, the obtained adhesion of the samples is the same. The adhesion does not change with the normal forces when a sphere is used to contact with flat PU samples. But when the two matually contact surfaces are flat, the adhesion of a material increases with the normal load at first and then turns to slightly raise. The adhesion of them is the same for the contact angles from 1 to 3 degree when the samples are softly connected. But when they are adhesive hardly to each other the adhesion decreases with increase of the contact angle.展开更多

In this work polyurethane films were grafted with sulfobetaine by a three-step procedure. In the first step, the films'surfaces were treated with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) in toluene at 50℃ in the presence of di-n-butyl tin dilaurate(DBTDL) as a catalyst. The extent of the reaction was monitored by ATR-IR spectra; a maximum number of free NCOgroups was obtained after a reaction time of 90 min. In the second step, the hydroxyl groups of N,N-dimethylethylethanolamine (DMEA) were allowed to react in toluene with NCO groups bound on the surface. In the thirdstep, sulfobetaines were formed on the surface through the ring-opening reaction between tertiary amine of DMEA and 1,3-propanesultone (PS). The surfaces of the films were characterized by ATR-IR and XPS showing that the grafted surfaceswere composed of sulfobetaine. The results of the contact angle measurement show that the surface was strongly hydrophilic. The platelet adhesion test demonstrated that the films grafted with sulfobetaine have excellent blood compatibility.展开更多

文摘As a non-toxic,highly reactive biomass material, gelatin is wildly used as the component of biomass-based adhesive. However, like most aqueous adhesives,gelatin-based adhesives suffer from long solidifying time or high solidifying temperature due to the low volatility of water, which highly limits the application potential of gelatinbased adhesives.Inspired by the fast adhesion of marine organisms through the formation of chemical crosslinks, herein,a kind of low temperature curable eco-friendly gelatin-based adhesive with good adhesive properties and fast curing at low temperature is developed by introducing clicking chemical Diels-Alder(DA)reaction between blocked waterborne polyurethane(MWPU)and gelatin. The furfuryl glycidyl ether(FGE)and 4-Maleimidophenol(4-HPM)for the DA reaction are grafted on gelatin, and the end-capping of MWPU,respectively. With the addition of MWPU and FGE,the cross-linking degree of gelatin increased, and the adhesion properties of the adhesive were improved. The shear strength and T-peel strength of the modified adhesive reached 0.95 MPa and 1.42 N/mm,respectively,after the curing time of 8 min at 40℃,which can meet the application requirements as adhesive for bio-medical use.
文摘Based on commercially available polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) stabilised polyvinyl acetate (PVAc), emulsion adhesives are neither heat nor moisture-resistant and show weak strength at high relative humidity and high temperatures. Here, in this paper, we reviewed the different hybrid chemistry based on polyurethane chemistry for wood bonding applications.
文摘The effect of microscale contact of rough surfaces on the adhesion and friction under negative normal forces was experimentally investigated. The results reveal why the gecko's toe must slide slightly on the target surface when it makes contact on a surface and suggest how a biomimetic gecko foot might be designed.
文摘This review is composed of three main parts each of which is written by well-known top specialists that have been,in a way or other, also the main participants of the majority of the developments reported. Thus, after a general part covering the grand lines and more in-depth views of more recent tannin, lignin, carbohydrate and soy bioadhesives, somemix of the other bio raw materials with soy protein and soy flour and some other differently sourced bioadhesives for wood, this review presents a more in-depth part on starch-based wood adhesives and a more indepth part covering plant protein-based adhesives. It must be kept in mind that the review is focused on completely or almost completely biosourced adhesives, the fashionable adhesives derived from mixes of biosourced materials with synthetic resins having been intentionally excluded. This choice was made as the latter constitute only an intermediate interval, possibly temporary if even for a somewhat long times, towards a final full bioeconomy of scale in this field. This review also focuses on more recent results, mainly obtained in the last 10–20 years, thus on adhesive formulations really innovative and sometimes even non-traditional.In all these fields there is still a lot of possibility of innovation for relevant formulation as this field is still in rapid growth.

文摘The role of the adhesive layer in the ballistic performance of ceramic multi-layer armour system is complex and multi-faceted,often with trade-offs between single-and multi-hit performance. However, research focused on untangling the underlying impact of varying adhesive cohesive or adhesion properties is limited and sometimes appears to provide conflicting conclusions.Comparison between the available studies is also often difficult due to variations in armour systems or ballistic testing being conducted. This review scrutinises the available research, identifying six critical properties of an adhesive layer in determining ballistic performance:elastic modulus, fracture strain, acoustic impedance, tensile bond strength, shear bond strength, and thickness. The impact of each of these properties on ballistic performance is discussed in detail, with clear description of the underlying processes involved, allowing clear optimisation goals to be established depending on the ceramic armour specification.
文摘In order to improve the adhesion of the middle frequency magnetic sputtered zirconium coating on a polyurethane film,an anode layer source was used to pretreat the polyurethane film with nitrogen and oxygen ions.SEMs and AFM roughness profiles of treated samples and the contrast groups were obtained.Besides,XPS survey spectrums and high resolution spectrums were also investigated. The adhesion test revealed that ion bombardment could improve the adhesion to the polyurethane coating substrate.A better etching result of oxygen ions versus nitrogen predicts a higher bonding strength of zirconium coating on polyurethane and, indeed, the highest bonding strengths are for oxygen ion bombardment upto 13.3 MPa.As demonstrated in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the oxygen ion also helps to introduce more active groups, and, therefore,it achieves a high value of adhesion strength.

文摘Reuse/recycling of expensive components in next-generation optoelectronic systems(e.g.,flexible electronics and foldable displays)for sustainability purposes impose stringent requirements on optically clear adhesive(OCA)with on-demand adhesion/deadhesion capability.Although some hot-melt OCAs have been developed, there still remain great challenges in balancing the mechanical property,adhesion/detachment and recyclability/reusability of the OCAs.Herein,we developed a debondable and robust polyurethane(PU)-based optically clear adhesive with both mechanical and chemical recyclability, overcoming the critical bottlenecks in sustainable advanced manufacturing. The ductile yet strong PU-based OCAs not only can adhere to various optically transparent glass and polymeric substrates(with a bonding strength high up to 5.0 MPa),but also exhibit deadhesion capability at high temperature owing to the thermally sensitive H-bonding interaction within the polymer network. The ondemand adhesion/deadhesion facilitates non-destructive detachment of functional assemblies and materials recycling/repair.The mechanical and chemical recyclability of PU-based OCAs can also effectively reduce the cost and address the endof-life issues. Moreover, the PU-based OCAs outperformed some commercial optical adhesives. In view of the straightforward synthesis, easy industrial scale-up and exceptional comprehensive properties, the PU-based OCAs will provide promising transformative solutions for advancing the circular economy and sustainability in next-generation optoelectronic devices.
文摘Many animals have a magic ability to move or hold on ceilings and walls because of the design of their adhesive pads. But when they are adhesive hardly to each other the adhesion decreases with increase of the contact angle.

文摘The increasing pressure from consumers and policy makers to reduce the use of synthetic polymers, whose production contributes to the depletion of non-renewable resources and are usually non-biodegradable,has prompted the efforts to find suitable bio-based sources for the production of polymers.Vegetable oils have been a frequently spotted in this search because they are versatile, highly available and a low cost liquid biosource, which can be used in the synthesis of a wide plethora of different polymers and reactive monomers.Following the same idea of reducing the environmental stress, the traditional polyurethanes that are soluble in organic solvents have been targeted for replacement, particularly in applications such as adhesives and coatings,in which the solvent is released to the atmosphere increasing the air pollution.Instead, waterborne polyurethanes(WBPU),which are polyurethane dispersions(PUD)prepared in aqueous media, release benign water to the atmosphere during use as supported or self-standing films for different applications. In this brief review, the contributions to the development of WBPUs based on vegetable oils are discussed, focusing mainly on the contributions of the last decade. The synthesis of ionic and nonionic PUDs,their characterization and the properties of the resulting dried materials,as well as derived composite materials are considered.

文摘On the molecular level, it is believed that polymers containing zwitterionic structures should be compatible withblood. The platelet adhesion test demonstrated that the films grafted with sulfobetaine have excellent blood compatibility.
