The net capturing method holds great potential for space debris removal due to its adaptability to the various target shapes and high fault tolerance. However, the capture mechanisms of current rope nets, which rely solely on a passive wrap-ping mechanism, limit their capacity to capture objects within a specific size range and make it challenging to handle unexpected situations.Inspired by spider webs, which combine wrapping and adhering to capture prey of various sizes,we present a new type of net(envelope diameter:208.49 mm)for on-orbit capture. This net adopts a spiral symmetric structure similar to spider webs, incorporates electrostatic-microstructure hybrid adhesives, and increases the maximum contact area by 38.31%,allowing it to capture debris ranging from fragments smaller than the mesh size(envelope diam-eter:2.7 mm-4.4 mm)to larger objects(envelope diameter:270 mm),and effectively grasps flexible items(450 mm2),planar items(350 mm2)and three-dimensional items(160 mm3).Moreover,to validate the net's capability for wrapping and adhesion, simulations and experiments are demonstrated that this dual capture method can effectively handle various targets. 展开更多

To address the issues of short setting time and high bleeding rate of A component, which easily cause pipe plugging and poor grouting performance when a two-component grout is injected synchronously behind the Segmental Lining, the inorganic retarder sodium pyrophosphate(TSPP)and three organic retarders were added to the A component:sodium citrate(SC),sodium tartrate(ST)and glycerol(GLY).The effect law and microscopic mechanism of viscosity, bleeding rate, setting time, gelling time, compressive strength, and stone rate were investigated. The results revealed that the addition of retarders could enhance the stability and setting time of the A component and increase the gelling time, stone rate, and compressive strength of two-component grout.Among them, the performance of the grout with an SC dosage of 0.1% was superior. The bleeding rate of this grout was reduced to 3.5%,the stone rate of the two-component grout was more than 99%,and the early compressive strength and late compressive strength of this grout were increased by approximately 35% and 7%,respectively.The initial and final setting time of the A component with a TSPP dosage of 0.3% was the longest, which was prolonged to 17 and 26 h,respectively.Microscopic analysis revealed that the four retarders hindered the hydration process of cement through complexation and adsorption, and inhibited the hydration of C_(3)S and the crystallisation of CH.Moreover, they reduced the defects caused by the rapid reaction of water glass and CH on the solid phase structure, enabled the microstructure of the stone body to be denser, and subsequently, enhanced the compressive strength. 展开更多

As a common electronic adhesive, ultraviolet(UV)curing polyurethane acrylate adhesive has both flexibility and wear resistance of polyurethane, excellent weather resistance and optical properties of acrylate.Despite the extensive applications,it is still difficult to solve the problems caused by the shrinkage of adhesive. Here,a new type of photosensitive adhesive for bonding electronic components based on supramolecular interaction was designed and synthesized. The supramolecular interaction of cyclodextrin and adamantane moieties introduced into the adhesive polymer entitles the viscosity of the adhesive to rise rapidly during use, thereby preventing adhesive loss and dislocation of electronic components.UV light could further cure the adhesive and position the electronic components. The adhesive shrunk<2%when cured by UV light,so it can be used for electronic packaging and high-resolution,defect-free lithography. 展开更多

We proposed a strategy using high-concentration tannic acid(TA) solutions to form robust and dense supramolecular networks in hydrogels, driven by the high osmotic pressure of the TA solution. The resulting hydrogels are both transparent and tough, with highly compacted networks. The hydrogels exhibit an ultimate tensile strength of approximately 4.55 MPa and a toughness of 160 MJ/m^(3).Additionally,the hydrogels adhere to a wide range of substrates, including metals, ceramics, glass, and even Teflon, with an adhesion strength of up to 42 kPa on Teflon plates.Given the biocompatibility and biodegradability of both PVA and TA,along with the hydrogels' toughness, transparency, and adhesiveness,we anticipated broad applications in the biomedical field, such as in articular cartilage restoration, electronic skin, and wound dressings.Additionally, these hydrogels hold significant potential for applications in wearable technology and optoelectronic devices. 展开更多

Silicone-based pressure-sensitive adhesives(Si-PSAs)are valued for their thermal stability, flexibility, and biocompatibility, but their weak bonding strength restricts high-performance use.Polyurethane-modified Si-PSAs enhance adhesion, however diisocyanates remain essential. The raw materials of isocyanates are toxic, and their synthesis involves phosgene. To make up for those shortcomings,a series of poly(hydroxy urethane-siloxane)PSAs,named as PHUSi here, were synthesized through the ring-opening reaction of cyclic carbonate-functionalized polysiloxanes(PSi_(x)-VEC_(z))with various aliphatic diamines. The PSi_(x)-VEC_(z) precursors were prepared via the hydrosilylation of hydrogen-containing polysiloxanes(PSi_(x)-H_(y))with 4-vinyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-one(VEC).The chemical structures of PSi_(x)-H_(y),PSi_(x)-VEC_(z) and PHUSi were characterized, and bonding properties of PHUSi were systematically evaluated. The influence of architectures on adhesive performance was elucidated through comprehensive analyses, including rheology, crosslink density assessment, and so on.These studies revealed that the tailored design of PHUSi adhesives combine the advantages of traditional Si-PSAs with enhanced adhesion while eliminating isocyanate toxicity. The optimized PHUSi formulation achieved remarkable 180°peel strength(76.5 N/m on skin)and maximum probe tack force(1.61 N),enabling secure 24 h attachment of flexible sensors to skin. These properties make PHUSi particularly suitable for medical applications,as demonstrated by successful implementation in flexible electrocardiogram devices, offering a biocompatible,high-performance adhesive. 展开更多

The effect of antibacterial adhesive on the biological corrosion resistance of mortar in seawater environment was studied by means of scanning electron microscope, thermogravimetric analysis,X-ray diffraction,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and ultra-depth microscope. The results show that the antibacterial adhesive can effectively inhibit the growth of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in seawater, hinder their metabolism to produce biological sulfate, and reduce the formation of destructive product gypsum. The mineral composition and thermal analysis showed that the peak value of plaster diffraction peak and the mass loss of plaster dehydration in antibacterial adhesive group were significantly lower than those in blank group(without protective coating group). In addition, the electric flux of chloride ions(>400 C)in the blank group of mortar samples was higher than that in the antibacterial adhesive group(<200 C),indicating that the antibacterial adhesive can effectively reduce the permeability of chloride ions in mortar, and thus hinder the Cl-erosion in seawater. 展开更多

Adhesively bonded joints are widely used in modern lightweight structures due to their high strengthto-weight ratio and design flexibility. However, the reliable non-destructive evaluation of bond integrity remains a significant challenge. This study presents a numerical investigation of adhesively bonded joints with different adhesive properties using ultrasonic guided waves. The main focus of the investigation is to evaluate the feasibility of using guided waves to assess bond integrity, particularly for detecting challenging weak bonds. For this purpose,a theoretical analysis of dispersion curves was conducted, revealing that the S0 Lamb wave mode is significantly sensitive to variations in adhesive properties in the 300-700 kHz frequency range.Finite element modelling was used to analyse the propagation of guided waves in two scenarios:an adhesively bonded aluminum structure and a more complex configuration-adhesively bonded lap joints. The Short-Time Fourier Transform(STFT)was used to process the obtained results and determine the group velocities of guided waves.By analysing the group velocity characteristics, their dependence on the adhesive properties was identified. In the first scenario,a clear separation of S0 modes from A0 modes was observed in the STFT analysis, with a decrease in group velocity as adhesive stiffness increased. For the more complex lap joint scenario, the separation between A0 and S0 modes was less distinct. However, the analysis of the average group velocity shows a dependence of average group velocity on adhesive properties. This is similar to the first scenario. There is a decrease in average group velocity as adhesive stiffness increases. The results obtained demonstrate that guided wavebased methods have a high potential for non-destructive evaluation of adhesively bonded structures, including the detection of weak bonds. 展开更多

Driven by the trend of device miniaturization and high-density integration, the interaction between adjacent electrodes has become a critical factor affecting the interfacial reliability of thermoelectric(TE)structures. This study investigates the influence of adjoining electrode interactions on the interfacial response of a multi-electrode/TE substrate structure, including interfacial stresses and stress intensity factors at the electrode ends.To solve the corresponding boundary-value problem, the Fourier transforms are adopted to derive a governing integro-differential equation for the interfacial shear stress in multi-electrode systems, incorporating the TE effects as generalized forces on the right-hand side. The results show that both the interfacial tension and transverse stress in the electrodes are significantly affected by the presence of adjacent electrodes. The interaction between neighboring electrodes diminishes as their spacing increases or when an adhesive interlayer is introduced.Furthermore, the softer and thinner electrodes, the softer and thicker adhesive interlayer, and the smaller TE loads are found to be beneficial for improving the interfacial performance. These findings may contribute to the accurate measurement in surface sensors and layout design of multi-point health monitoring systems for TE structures. 展开更多

This investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of using a two-component polyurethane (PUR) adhesive, with special waterproof properties, in constructing wooden structures. We designed and conducted tests to compare the shear strength and adhesion performance of PUR with polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) adhesive on block-shear specimens constructed of oriental beech (Fagus orientalis L.), fir (Abies alba Mill.), poplar (Populus deltoides Bartr.), white oak (Quercus alba L.), sycamore (Platanus orientalis L.) and white walnut (Juglans cinerea L.). The values of the percentage of wood failure were also determined in specimens constructed with each adhesive. The highest shear strength values of both adhesives were obtained in specimens constructed of beech, while the lowest shear strength values were obtained in fir and poplar specimens. Average shear strength of the PUR adhesive was 16.5% higher than that of the PVAc adhesive. Specimens constructed of fir, poplar and sycamore were characterised by the highest percentages of wood failure, whereas the lowest average percentages of wood failure were obtained in beech and oak specimens. With the exception of oak specimens, there was no statistically significant difference between percentage of wood failure among the PUR and PVAc adhesives. Generally, the PUR adhesive showed an acceptable adhesion performance on wood materials used in our study. 展开更多

Polymeric materials which can undergo controlled degradation and recycling are of great significance for a sustainable society.Although tremendous progress has been made in the degradation and recycling of both thermoplastic and thermoset plastics, the development of high-performance degradable polymer adhesives is rare. Here,we have prepared high-performance nucleobase-containing thioctic acid-based supramolecular polymer adhesives through free radical polymerization. The specific hydrogen-bonding interactions between complementary nucleobases greatly improve the weak cohesion of the thioctic acid-based polymers and enhance the environmental stability of the thioctic acidbased polymers simultaneously.Degradation of the nucleobase-containing thioctic acid-based supramolecular polymers is achieved by the reduction of the disulfide backbone, and the cycle of degradation and repolymerization is further achieved via oxidative polymerization. The adhesion strength of the nucleobase-containing thioctic acid-based supramolecular polymers after two cycles of degradation and repolymerization still reaches as high as 4.7±0.3 MPa.This work provides an approach for the development of environmentally stable and high-performance degradable thioctic acid-based adhesives. 展开更多

As the most abundant aromatic bio-based polymer, lignin has great potential as a sustainable feedstock for building crosslinked thermoset polymers as bio-based adhesives. However, the potential of hardwood kraft lignin(HKL)is limited due to its poor crosslinking reactivity.Hence, for the first time, the present study reports the facile oxidation of HKL involving a redox reaction with silver-ammonia complexes([(AgNH3)2]+),primarily focusing on oxidation to produce reactive quinones and promote C-C linkages during reaction. This study aims to increases reactivity of oxidized HKL for effective crosslinking with monoethanolamine(MEA)for the development of bio-based wood adhesives. The characterization, including 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)and Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR)spectroscopy,confirms the oxidation reaction, such as the formation of quinones(C=O)and subsequent crosslinking between the oxidized HKL molecules and MEA.Additionally, gel permeation chromatography(GPC)confirms the C-C and C-O linkages with increased molecular weight after oxidation, and is supported by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)which shows the exothermic reaction due to the crosslinking of the oxidized HKL molecules via condensation to form C-C and C-O linkages. The crosslinked HKL/MEA-based adhesives underwent mild reaction and achieved a maximum dry shear strength of 0.77 MPa,which exceeds the standard requirement of 0.6 MPa.These findings demonstrate not only a one-pot oxidation for improving the reactivity of HKL using silver complexes, but also its facile crosslinking with MEA for sustainable bio-based wood adhesives. 展开更多

This review is composed of three main parts each of which is written by well-known top specialists that have been,in a way or other, also the main participants of the majority of the developments reported. Thus, after a general part covering the grand lines and more in-depth views of more recent tannin, lignin, carbohydrate and soy bioadhesives, somemix of the other bio raw materials with soy protein and soy flour and some other differently sourced bioadhesives for wood, this review presents a more in-depth part on starch-based wood adhesives and a more indepth part covering plant protein-based adhesives. It must be kept in mind that the review is focused on completely or almost completely biosourced adhesives, the fashionable adhesives derived from mixes of biosourced materials with synthetic resins having been intentionally excluded. This choice was made as the latter constitute only an intermediate interval, possibly temporary if even for a somewhat long times, towards a final full bioeconomy of scale in this field. This review also focuses on more recent results, mainly obtained in the last 10–20 years, thus on adhesive formulations really innovative and sometimes even non-traditional.In all these fields there is still a lot of possibility of innovation for relevant formulation as this field is still in rapid growth. 展开更多

Since 2009,perovskite solar cells(PSCs)have advanced significantly, achieving over 26%efficiency for single-junction devices and exceeding 34%for silicon-perovskite tandem cells.Despite these successes, the weak adhesion of C_(60)to perovskite layers, due to van der Waals interactions, hinders long-term stability. In this study,we introduce electron-deficient intermolecular adhesives(EDIAs)as a novel interlayer material to enhance adhesion between perovskite and C_(60)layers.Comprehensive analyses, including density functional theory calculations, microscopy, and spectroscopy, demonstrate that EDIAs,particularly NDI-C9-Ace comprising of three key functionalities:aπ-electron-deficient arene core,a hydrophobic passivation core, and a secondary-bond anchoring core, significantly improve bonding strength and recombination passivation. This leads to enhanced efficiency as well as enhanced mechanical and photochemical stability in PSCs.Long-term stability tests further confirm the superior durability of EDIA-enhanced devices. This study highlights EDIA as a promising strategy for enhancing the robustness and efficiency of PSCs. 展开更多

The role of the adhesive layer in the ballistic performance of ceramic multi-layer armour system is complex and multi-faceted,often with trade-offs between single-and multi-hit performance. However, research focused on untangling the underlying impact of varying adhesive cohesive or adhesion properties is limited and sometimes appears to provide conflicting conclusions.Comparison between the available studies is also often difficult due to variations in armour systems or ballistic testing being conducted. This review scrutinises the available research, identifying six critical properties of an adhesive layer in determining ballistic performance:elastic modulus, fracture strain, acoustic impedance, tensile bond strength, shear bond strength, and thickness. The impact of each of these properties on ballistic performance is discussed in detail, with clear description of the underlying processes involved, allowing clear optimisation goals to be established depending on the ceramic armour specification. 展开更多

This study aims to investigate the failure modes at the interface of semi-flexible pavement(SFP)materials. The cohesive and wetting properties of asphalt materials,as well as two types of grout(early strength cement grout-ELS and high strength cement grout-CHS),were evaluated through pull-out tests and contact angle experiments. The rheological properties of the grout/asphalt mortar were assessed using dynamic shear rheometer(DSR)testing. The interaction coefficient, complex shear modulus, and complex viscosity coefficients of the grout/asphalt mortar were calculated to analyze the interaction between the grout and asphalt.Failure modes were identified through image analysis of semi-circular bending test(SCB)specimens. Results indicate that ELS specimens exhibit a lower grout/asphalt interface failure ratio compared to CHS specimens, due to the superior wettability and interaction of ELS grout. As the temperature increases, the proportions of cement fracture and aggregate failure decrease, while the proportion of asphalt cohesive failure surfaces increases.Furthermore, the bonding strength of SBS-modified asphalt with the grout exceeds that of pure asphalt. 展开更多

The advancement of functional adhesives featuring recyclable and repairable properties is of great significance in interfacial science and engineering.Herein,a series of high-strength,recyclable fluorine-containing adhesives(ESOx-FPF)were designed and synthesized by crosslinking two prepolymers,FPF-B(derived from side-chain fluorinated diol, isocyanate, and aminoboric acid)and ESO-B(synthesized from biobased epoxy soybean oil and aminoboric acid),through dynamic boro-oxygen bonds. The resulting adhesive exhibited an optimal tensile strength of 42 MPa and the shear strength on steel plates reached as high as 3.89 MPa.More importantly, benefiting from the dynamic reversibility of the boron-oxygen bonds along with the hydrogen bonds interaction,ESOx-FPF can be welded with the assistance of solvents and recycled for multiple cycles. The outstanding healing efficiency and excellent reprocessability of these functional adhesives were confirmed by mechanical testing. Moreover, the as-prepared adhesives demonstrated universal and remarkable adhesion to various substrates, such as aromatic polyamide, aluminum plates and polycarbonate, meanwhile, they could be easily disassembled and recycled using ethanol without damaging the substrates surface. This study not only provides a simple strategy for the synthesis of eco-friendly adhesives with weldable and recyclable properties, but also sheds light on the development of other functional materials utilizing dynamic covalent chemistry. 展开更多

Gecko-inspired van der Waals force-based adhesion technology demonstrates significant potential for robotic operations. While superior adhesion is achieved under parallel contact during testing, engineering operations often involve non-parallel contact, weakening adhesion, and compromising task stability and efficiency.Stable attachment under such non-parallel contacts remains challenging.Inspired by the soft muscle and rigid bone in the gecko’s sole, this study proposes a self-adaptive core-shell dry adhesive by embedding a thin, rigid piece into a soft, thick elastomer comprising a top adhesion tip with a mushroom-like geometry for interfacial adhesion based on the van der Waals force and a bottom core-shell configuration for interface stress regulation.Unlike traditional core-shell structures with a fixed“dead core,”the proposed“live core”rotates within the soft shell, mimicking skeletal joints. This enables stress equalization at the interface and facilitates adaptive contact to macroscopic interfacial angle errors. This innovative core-shell configuration demonstrates an adhesion strength 100 times higher than conventional homogeneous structures under non-parallel contact and offers anti-overturning ability by mitigating torsional effects. The proposed strategy can advance the development of gecko-inspired adhesion-based devices and systems. 展开更多
