Magnesium alloys are widely used in aerospace and automotive industries due to their lightweight. However, their poor fatigue performance limits the broader application, especially in dynamic stress environments. This study explores novel coupled pretreatments of free-end largeangle pre-torsion and low-temperature aging to improve the fatigue resistance of rolled ZK60 magnesium alloy.STA(pre-torsion followed by low-temperature aging)and SAT(low-temperature aging followed by pre-torsion)samples were prepared to investigate the influences of pretreatment coupling sequences. The results of microstructure characterization reveal that pre-torsion significantly enhances the formation of tensile twins and introduces a gradient microstructure with increased dislocation density from the center to the edges.STA process resulted in the highest twinning area fraction of 35.2% and a kernel average misorientation of 0.94 at the edge.Mechanical testing demonstrated that the coupled pre-treatment obtained a better combination of strength and plasticity, significantly improved the yield strength in the compression stage, and increased the tensile-compressive yield ratio to>0.9.In the low-cycle fatigue test, the STA samples exhibited lower cyclic mean stress,a smaller cyclic hardening trend, and better hysteretic symmetry, leading to an improvement in fatigue life of up to 256%.The findings suggest that the combined pre-torsion and low-temperature aging treatments offer a promising approach to enhance the mechanical properties and fatigue resistance of ZK60 magnesium alloy, making it suitable for structural applications in demanding environments. 展开更多

The degradation of Lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)during cycling is particularly exacerbated at low temperatures, which has a significant impact on the longevity of electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and consumer electronics.A comprehensive understanding of the low-temperature aging mechanisms throughout the whole life cycle of LIBs is crucial. However, existing research is limited, which typically focuses on capacity degradation to 80%.To fill this gap, this paper conducts low-temperature cyclic aging tests at three different charging rates. The investigation employs differential voltage analysis, the distribution of relaxation times technique, and disassembly characterization to explore both thermodynamic degradation and kinetic degradation, alongside a correlation analysis of the factors influencing these degradation processes. The results reveal two distinct knee points in the capacity decline of LIBs during the whole life cycle,in contrast to prior studies identifying only one. Before the first knee point, the thickening of the SEI film dominates capacity loss, with higher charging rates accelerating the process. After the first knee point, the main degradation mechanisms shift to lithium plating and the fracture of the positive electrode active particles. These two aging factors become more pronounced with ongoing cycling, culminating in a second knee point in capacity decline.Notably,a novel finding demonstrates that after the second knee point, capacity degradation progresses faster at lower charging rates compared to medium rates. The reason is the fracture of graphite particles also becomes a critical contributor to the severe capacity degradation at lower charging rates. These insights will guide the designs of next-generation low-temperature LIBs and low-temperature battery management systems. 展开更多

Previous reports of formamidinium/methylamine(FAMA)-mixed halide perovskite solar cells have focused mainly on controlling the morphology of the perovskite film and its interface—for example, through the inclusion of bromine and surface passivation. In this paper,we describe a new processing pathway for the growth of a high-quality bromine-free FAMAPbI3 halide perovskites via the control of intermediate phase.Through low-temperature aging growth(LTAG)of a freshly deposited perovskite film,α-phase perovskites can be seeded in the intermediate phase and,at the same time, prevent beta-phase perovskite to nucleate. After postannealing, large grain-size perovskites with significantly reduced PbI2 presence on the surface can be obtained, thereby eliminating the need of additional surface passivation step. Our pristine LTAG-treated solar cells could provide PCEs of greater than 22%without elaborate use of bromine or an additional passivation layer.More importantly, when using this LTAG process, the growth of the pure alpha-phase FAMAPbI3 was highly reproducible. 展开更多

Lithium-ion batteries(LIBs),while dominant in energy storage due to high energy density and cycling stability, suffer from severe capacity decay, rate capability degradation, and lithium dendrite formation under low-temperature(LT)operation.Therefore,a more comprehensive and systematic understanding of LIB behavior at LT is urgently required. This review article comprehensively reviews recent advancements in electrolyte engineering strategies aimed at improving the low-temperature operational capabilities of LIBs.The study methodically examines critical performance-limiting mechanisms through fundamental analysis of four primary challenges:insufficient ionic conductivity under cryogenic conditions, kinetically hindered charge transfer processes,Li+transport limitations across the solidelectrolyte interphase(SEI),and uncontrolled lithium dendrite growth. The work elaborates on innovative optimization approaches encompassing lithium salt molecular design with tailored dissociation characteristics, solvent matrix optimization through dielectric constant and viscosity regulation, interfacial engineering additives for constructing low-impedance SEI layers, and gel-polymer composite electrolyte systems.Notably, particular emphasis is placed on emerging machine learning-guided electrolyte formulation strategies that enable high-throughput virtual screening of constituent combinations and prediction of structure-property relationships. These artificial intelligence-assisted rational design frameworks demonstrate significant potential for accelerating the development of next-generation LT electrolytes by establishing quantitative composition-performance correlations through advanced data-driven methodologies. 展开更多

Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are widely regarded as primary drivers of aging and are associated with several neurodegenerative diseases. The degeneration of motor neurons during aging is a critical pathological factor contributing to the progression of sarcopenia. However, the morphological and functional changes in mitochondria and their interplay in the degeneration of the neuromuscular junction during aging remain poorly understood.A defined systematic search of the Pub Med,Web of Science and Embase databases(last accessed on October 30,2024)was conducted with search terms including'mitochondria','aging'and'NMJ'.Clinical and preclinical studies of mitochondrial dysfunction and neuromuscular junction degeneration during aging.Twentyseven studies were included in this systematic review. This systematic review provides a summary of morphological, functional and biological changes in neuromuscular junction, mitochondrial morphology, biosynthesis, respiratory chain function, and mitophagy during aging. We focus on the interactions and mechanisms underlying the relationship between mitochondria and neuromuscular junctions during aging.Aging is characterized by significant reductions in mitochondrial fusion/fission cycles, biosynthesis, and mitochondrial quality control, which may lead to neuromuscular junction dysfunction, denervation and poor physical performance.Motor nerve terminals that exhibit redox sensitivity are among the first to exhibit abnormalities, ultimately leading to an early decline in muscle strength through impaired neuromuscular junction transmission function.Parg coactivator 1 alpha is a crucial molecule that regulates mitochondrial biogenesis and modulates various pathways, including the mitochondrial respiratory chain, energy deficiency, oxidative stress, and inflammation.Mitochondrial dysfunction is correlated with neuromuscular junction denervation and acetylcholine receptor fragmentation, resulting in muscle atrophy and a decrease in strength during aging.Physical therapy, pharmacotherapy, and gene therapy can alleviate the structural degeneration and functional deterioration of neuromuscular junction by restoring mitochondrial function. Therefore, mitochondria are considered potential targets for preserving neuromuscular junction morphology and function during aging to treat sarcopenia. 展开更多

Regenerative medicine is a promising therapeutic avenue for previously incurable diseases. As the risk of chronic and degenerative diseases significantly increases with age,the elderly population represents a major cohort for stem cell-based therapies. However, the regenerative potential of stem cells significantly decreases with advanced age and deteriorating health status of the donor. Therefore, the efficacy of autologous stem cell therapy is significantly compromised in older patients. To overcome these limitations, alternative strategies have been used to restore the age-and disease-depleted function of stem cells. These methods aim to restore the therapeutic efficacy of aged stem cells for autologous use. This article explores the effect of donor age and health status on the regenerative potential of stem cells. It further highlights the limitations of stem cell-based therapy for autologous treatment in the elderly.A comprehensive insight into the potential strategies to address the“age”and“disease”compromised regenerative potential of autologous stem cells is also presented. The information provided here serves as a valuable resource for physicians and patients for optimization of stem cellbased autologous therapy for aged patients. 展开更多

The effects of artificial aging(T6)on the creep resistance with tensile stresses in the range of 50−80 MPa at 175℃were investigated for an extruded Mg−1.22Al−0.31Ca−0.44Mn(wt.%)alloy.The Guinier-Preston(G.P.)zones primarily precipitate in the sample aged at 200℃for 1 h(T6-200℃/1h),while the Al_(2)Ca phases mainly precipitate in the sample aged at 275℃for 8 h(T6-275℃/8h).The T6-200℃/1h sample exhibits excellent creep resistance, with a steady-state creep rate one order of magnitude lower than that of the T6-275℃/8h sample. The abnormally high stress exponent(~8.2)observed in the T6-200℃/1h sample is associated with the power-law breakdown mechanism.TEM analysis illuminates that the creep mechanism for the T6-200℃/1h sample is cross-slip between basal and prismatic dislocations, while the T6-275℃/8h sample exhibits a mixed mechanism of dislocation cross-slip and climb.Compared with the Al_(2)Ca phase, the dense G.P.zones effectively impede dislocation climb and glide during the creep process, demonstrating superior creep resistance of the T6-200℃/1h sample. 展开更多

Abscisic acid(ABA)plays a key role in promoting the growth and development of plants,as well as mediating the responses of plants to adverse environmental conditions. Here,we measured the photosynthetic capacity of wild-type RR,mutant sitiens(sit),and ABA-pretreated sit tomato seedlings following exposure to low-temperature(LT)stress.We found that the net photosynthetic rate, intercellular carbon dioxide concentration, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance of sit seedlings were lower than those of RR seedlings under LT stress. The chloroplast width, area, and number of osmiophilic granules were significantly larger in sit seedlings than in RR seedlings, while the chloroplast length/width ratio was significantly lower in sit seedlings than in RR seedlings. The photochemical activity of sit seedlings was lower, and the expression of photosynthesis-related genes in sit seedlings was altered following exposure to LT stress.ABA pretreatment significantly alleviated the above phenomenon. We also conducted an RNA sequencing analysis and characterized the expression patterns of genes in tomato seedlings following exposure to LT stress. We constructed 15 cDNA libraries and identified several differentially expressed genes involved in photosynthesis, plant hormone signaling transduction, and primary and secondary metabolism.Additional analyses of genes encoding transcription factors and proteins involved in photosynthesis-related processes showed pronounced changes in expression under LT stress.Luciferase reporter assay and electrophoretic mobility shift assay revealed that WRKY22 regulates the expression of PsbA.The PSII of WRKY22 and PsbA-silenced plants was inhibited. Our findings indicate that ABA plays a role in regulating the process of photosynthesis and protecting PSII in tomato under LT stress through the WRKY22-PsbA complex. 展开更多

The rutting and low-temperature resistances of warm-mix recycled asphalt binders under the secondary aging condition were measured by the dynamic shear rheometer test and bending beam rheometer test.Effects of different types of warm-mix asphalt(WMA)technologies and additives were evaluated.Aging and improvement mechanisms were investigated by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy test.It is found that recycled binders after the secondary aging are more resistant to rutting and less resistant to low-temperature cracking. The two warm-mix asphalt technologies have opposite effects.Using the Sasobit WMA significantly improves the rutting resistance and reduces the low temperature resistance for the recycled binders due to its morphological change at different temperatures. The rutting factor values of recycled asphalt binders with the Sasobit additive increase by 4.6 to 5.6 times. However, using the Evotherm WMA causes the deterioration of the rutting resistance due to the structural lubrication effect. The rutting factor values of recycled asphalt binders with the Evotherm additive show the reduction of 52%to 62%.It is recommended to add the styrene butadiene rubber latex or crumb rubber powder into the warm-mix recycled asphalt binders to simultaneously improve the rutting and low-temperature cracking resistances. 展开更多

The design and development of high-performance anodes pose significant challenges in the construction of next-generation rechargeable lithium-ion batteries(LIBs).Sodium molybdate dihydrate(Na_(2)MoO_(4)·2H_(2)O)has garnered increasing attention due to its cost-effectiveness,non-toxicity and earth abundance. To enhance the Li storage performance of Na_(2)MoO_(4)·2H_(2)O,a crystallographic orientation regulation strategy is proposed in this work.Initially, density functional theory calculations are carried out to demonstrate that the(020)crystal plane of Na_(2)MoO_(4)·2H_(2)O offers the lowest energy barrier for Li^(+)migration.Subsequently, the preferred crystallographic orientation of Na_(2)MoO_(4)·2H_(2)O crystal is tuned through a low-temperature recrystallization method.Furthermore, the microstructure and phase changes of Na_(2)MoO_(4)·2H_(2)O during the lithiation/de-lithiation process are studied using in situ and ex situ XRD tests,ex situ XPS and cyclic voltammetry to unravel its Li^(+)storage mechanism.Upon application as LIBs anode, the Na_(2)MoO_(4)·2H_(2)O single-crystal particles with a preferred(020)surface exhibit superior reversible capacity,high-capacity retention and high cycling stability. The enhanced Li storage performance should be attributed to the regulated crystallographic orientation and small changes in the crystal microstructure during the charge/discharge process, which facilitates Li^(+)migration and bolsters structural stability.Notably, this study introduces a novel concept and a simple synthesis method for the advancement of electrodes in rechargeable batteries. 展开更多

The poor oxidation stability of ether-based solvents has long been a major challenge limiting their practical application. To enhance the oxidative stability of ether-based electrolytes, the physicochemical properties of various glycol dimethyl ethers are screened, and diglyme(G2)is selected as the sole solvent for the electrolyte.Lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide(LiFSI),a highly dissociative salt,is used as the primary salt;while lithium nitrate(LiNO_(3))and lithium difluorophosphate(LiDFP),which have small ionic sizes and strong binding energies, are added as secondary salts. The resulting electrolyte can modulate the electric double layer structure by NO_(3)^(-) and DFP^(-) on the cathode side, leading to an increased Liþconcentration that is originally repelled by the cathode.Additionally, the oxidation stability of the electrolyte is improved and the formed electrode-electrolyte interphase is more uniform and stable, thereby enhancing the electrochemical performance of the cells. As a result, cells assembled with a total of 1 M ternary lithium salts in G2 solvent can operate at high voltage of 4.4 V.The LijjNCM811 cells maintain 80.2%capacity retention after 270 cycles at room temperature, with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.5%,and exhibit 88.4%capacity retention after 200 cycles at -30℃. 展开更多

Proper matching of cold-rolled deformation and low-temperature short-term aging can simultaneously enhance the strength and ductility of the lean duplex stainless steel. To investigate this, the microstructure evolution of cold-rolled and aging steels was observed by using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and electron backscattered diffraction. Additionally, the phase volume fraction was measured using X-ray diffraction. In this study, it was observed that the elongation of 21Cr lean duplex stainless steel significantly increased to 16.7% after undergoing moderate cold deformation (~ 40% reduction) and subsequent aging treatment at 550 ℃ for 30 min. Remarkably, the material still maintained a high yield strength of 1045 MPa. Such an excellent mechanical property was attributed to a unique microstructure combination of fine α'-martensite, twins, coarsened austenite resulting from partial martensite reverse transformation, and two-phase fine layered structure. The result of this study may open up new horizons for the alloy development in order to overcome the low ductility of cold-rolled high-strength lean duplex stainless steel. 展开更多

Regulated cell death(such as apoptosis, necroptosis, pyroptosis, autophagy, cuproptosis, ferroptosis, disulfidptosis)involves complex signaling pathways and molecular effectors, and has been proven to be an important regulatory mechanism for regulating neuronal aging and death. However, excessive activation of regulated cell death may lead to the progression of aging-related diseases. This review summarizes recent advances in the understanding of seven forms of regulated cell death in age-related diseases.Notably, the newly identified ferroptosis and cuproptosis have been implicated in the risk of cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases. These forms of cell death exacerbate disease progression by promoting inflammation, oxidative stress, and pathological protein aggregation. The review also provides an overview of key signaling pathways and crosstalk mechanisms among these regulated cell death forms, with a focus on ferroptosis, cuproptosis, and disulfidptosis. For instance,FDX1 directly induces cuproptosis by regulating copper ion valency and dihydrolipoamide S-acetyltransferase aggregation, while copper mediates glutathione peroxidase 4 degradation, enhancing ferroptosis sensitivity.Additionally, inhibiting the Xc-transport system to prevent ferroptosis can increase disulfide formation and shift the NADP^(+)/NADPH ratio, transitioning ferroptosis to disulfidptosis. These insights help to uncover the potential connections among these novel regulated cell death forms and differentiate them from traditional regulated cell death mechanisms. In conclusion, identifying key targets and their crosstalk points among various regulated cell death pathways may aid in developing specific biomarkers to reverse the aging clock and treat age-related neurodegenerative conditions. 展开更多

Recent reports suggest that aging is not solely a physiological process in living beings;instead, it should be considered a pathological process or disease(Amorim et al., 2022). Consequently, this process involves a wide range of factors, spanning from genetic to environmental factors, and even includes the gut microbiome(GM)(Mayer et al., 2022). All these processes coincide at some point in the inflammatory process, oxidative stress, and apoptosis, at different degrees in various organs and systems that constitute a living organism(Mayer et al., 2022;AguilarHernández et al., 2023). 展开更多

The oral cavity is a complex physiological community encompassing a wide range of microorganisms.Dysbiosis of oral microbiota can lead to various oral infectious diseases, such as periodontitis and tooth decay, and even affect systemic health, including brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases.Recent studies have highlighted how oral microbes might be involved in brain aging and neurodegeneration, indicating potential avenues for intervention strategies. In this review,we summarize clinical evidence demonstrating a link between oral microbes/oral infectious diseases and brain aging/neurodegenerative diseases, and dissect potential mechanisms by which oral microbes contribute to brain aging and neurodegeneration. We also highlight advances in therapeutic development grounded in the realm of oral microbes, with the goal of advancing brain health and promoting healthy aging. 展开更多
