Stabilizing pile is a kind of earth shoring structure frequently used in slope engineering. When the piles have cantilever segments above the ground, laggings are usually installed to avoid collapse of soil between piles. Evaluating the earth pressure acting on laggings is of great importance in design process.Since laggings are usually less stiff than piles, the lateral pressure on lagging is much closer to active earth pressure. In order to estimate the lateral earth pressure on lagging more accurately, first,a model test of cantilever stabilizing pile and lagging systems was carried out. Then, basing the experimental results a three-dimensional sliding wedge model was established. Last, the calculation process of the total active force on lagging is presented based on the kinematic approach of limit analysis. A comparison is made between the total active force on lagging calculated by the formula presented in this study and the force on a same-size rigid retaining wall obtained from Rankine's theory. It is found that the proposed method fits well with the experimental results.Parametric studies show that the total active force on lagging increases with the growth of the lagging height and the lagging clear span; while decreases asthe soil internal friction angle and soil cohesion increase. 展开更多

Based on the composite analysis of the coal sample series with natural and artificial maturation, the lagging and its kinetic mechanism of the hydrocarbon re-generation from the organic matters in coals were studied using the Rock-Eval gas chromatogram (PyGC) method. The results show that the maturation at the hydrocarbon regeneration peak shifts regularly forward with increasing the starting maturation and the deadline of the hydrocarbon regeneration lies about at 4.0% R o. The difference value between the peak and starting maturation of the hydrocarbon re-generation develops in a parabolalike pattern with increasing the starting maturation, and the resolute and relative laggings evolve in stage, from which the lagging depth could be predicted. The peak halfwidth of the hydrocarbon re-generation curve develops as the starting maturation increases, which might indicate that the hydrocarbonderived rocks with the starting maturation lied about at oilgenerated peak might be relatively high in the hydrocarbonregenerated amount. In the meantime, the mean reactivated energy of the coal samples with starting maturation develops in four stages that are highly consistent with those of the hydrocarbonregenerated amount and lagging, which indicated that the hydrocarbon re-generation is strictly controlled by the geochemical mechanism of the reactive kinetics. 展开更多

This paper deals with an assessment of the machined surface created by abrasive waterjet technology regarding its cutting performance versus profile, lagging and waterjet angle assessments. The results of the experiments presented in this study are with regard to Carrara marble. The machined surfaces were measured in seven different locations across a 40 mm depth of cut by a high precision contact-type profilometer and thus assessed using the standardized amplitude parameters of the profile distribution. The lagging and waterjet angle were also evaluated by creating a digital photo of the machined surface together with a reference gauge. The existence of machining marks on the machined surface has been mostly noticeable in the bottom zone around ~20 mm depth of cut down to jet exit. This investigation leads to a conclusion that, stand-off distance and traverse rate play the roles of the utmost importance in considerations of the machined surface quality in contrast to abrasive mass flow rate. In addition, while the striation zone (rough surface) cannot be eliminated entirely, by selecting proper process parameters, a smooth cutting machined surface can be accomplished. 展开更多

EQrot nonconforming finite element approximation to a class of nonlinear dual phase lagging heat conduction equations is discussed for semi-discrete and fully-discrete schemes. By use of a special property, that is, the consistency error of this element is of order O(h2) one order higher than its interpolation error O(h), the superclose results of order O(h2) in broken Hi-norm are obtained. At the same time, the global superconvergence in broken Hi-norm is deduced by interpolation postprocessing technique. Moreover, the extrapolation result with order O(h4) is derived by constructing a new interpolation postprocessing operator and extrapolation scheme based on the known asymptotic expansion formulas of EQrot element. Finally, optimal error estimate is gained for a proposed fully-discrete scheme by different approaches from the previous literature. 展开更多

This paper presents an assessment of the influence of the lagging distance between two horizontal tunnel faces of the side-by-side twin tunnels on the responses of the adjacent existing single pile by a series of three-dimensional numerical analyses. Two different relative positions between the pile tip and the tunnel are considered to cover the short and long pile behaviors. The responses of the existing pile in terms of pile head settlement, axial force, lateral movement and bending moment are considered and discussed. The numerical results indicate that the lagging distance between twin tunnel faces significantly affects not only the soil movements but also the responses of the existing single pile. The critical case that produces unsatisfactory pile responses due to twin tunneling is when the lagging distance between the second tunnel and the preceding tunnel equals to the shield length. It is recommended that the lagging distance be not less than three times of shield length when the two tunnels need to be concurrently excavated. 展开更多

Objectives This study aimed to explore the lagged and cumulative effects of risk factors on disability in older adults using distributed lag non-linear models(DLNMs).Methods We utilized data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study(CHARLS).After feature selection via Elastic Net Regularization,we applied DLNMs to evaluate the lagged effects of risk factors.Disability was defined as the presence of any difficulties in basic activities of daily living(BADL).The cumulative relative risk(CRR)was calculated by summing the lag-specific risk estimates, representing the cumulative disability risk over the specified lag period.Effect modifications and sensitivity analyses were also performed. Results This study included a total of 2,318 participants.Early-phase lag factors, such as the difficulty in stooping(CRR=3.58;95%CI:2.31-5.55;P<0.001)and walking(CRR=2.77;95%CI:1.39-5.55;P<0.001),exerted the strongest effects immediately upon occurrence.Mid-phase lag factors, such as arthritis(CRR=1.51;95%CI:1.10-2.06;P=0.001),showed a resurgence in disability risk within 2-3 years.Late-phase lag factors, including depressive symptoms(CRR=2.38;95%CI:1.30-4.35;P<0.001)and elevated systolic blood pressure(CRR=1.64;95%CI:1.06-2.79;P=0.02),exhibited significant long-term cumulative risks.Conversely, grip strength(CRR=0.80;95%CI:0.54-0.95;P=0.02)and social participation(CRR=0.89;95%CI:0.73-0.99;P=0.04)were significant protective factors. Conclusions The findings underscore the importance of tailored interventions that account for various lag characteristics of different factors to effectively mitigate disability risk.Future studies should explore the underlying biological and sociological mechanisms of these lagged effects, identify intervention strategies that target risk factors with different lagged patterns, and evaluate their effectiveness. 展开更多

Drought influences carbon fixation by plants. Therefore, elucidating its impact on carbon fluxes in plants at the ecosystem level is crucial for assessing their role in mitigating climate change.Using carbon fluxes and environmental factor data from FLUXNET sites,we analyzed the influence of drought on carbon fluxes, their drivers,time-lag effects, and recovery times across various climatic regions and seasons. Results showed drought significantly decreased gross primary production(GPP),ecosystem respiration, and net ecosystem productivity in arid regions but slightly increased carbon sequestration in humid regions.Summer droughts negatively affected vegetation carbon fluxes, partly offset by the positive impact of spring droughts.Nonforest carbon fluxes were more susceptible to drought effects than forest fluxes.Soil water content(SWC)was the main influence on changes in arid regions, whereas vapor pressure deficit(VPD)dominated humid regions.Decreased SWC and increased VPD reduced carbon sequestration in arid regions but increased it in humid regions.Increased VPD reduced GPP,leading to forest carbon loss, whereas decreased SWC reduced GPP,leading to nonforest carbon loss. The lag time of the drought effects on carbon fluxes was longer in humid regions(19.44 d)than in arid regions(14.71 d).Compared to nonforest areas(16.74 d and 57 d for drought lag and recovery time, respectively),forest areas had a longer lag(18.81 d)and recovery time(92 d).The findings revealed discrepancies in the main factors regulating vegetation carbon fluxes during droughts between arid and humid regions and between forest and nonforest ecosystems. These insights provide a new perspective on understanding and simulating carbon-climate feedback.Enhancing ecosystem diversity is a feasible measure to increase drought resistance. 展开更多

In this study, based on MERRA-2 reanalysis data and a multi-algorithm integrated atmospheric river(AR)iden-tification method, the authors reveal the cross-seasonal regulation mechanism of El Niño-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)on winter-spring AR activities in East Asia. The results show that ENSO asymmetrically modulates AR ac-tivity through teleconnection and hysteresis effects, and has significant enhancement/inhibition effects on ARs in different regions. At the onset of El Niño,enhanced southwesterly flow at the western edge of the western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH)leads to enhanced AR activity in the western Pacific, and anomalous southerly winds in the Indian Ocean promote northward transport of water vapor in the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. With a three-month lag,the weakening and eastward retreat of the WPSH weakens the low-latitude AR activity, but persistent southerly winds in the Bay of Bengal maintain the AR activity over Southwest China. The mid-to high-latitude AR response exhibits delayed dynamics, initially dominated by the synergistic effect of the southward deviation of the upper-air rapids and the low-level convergence(double-rapid-flow effect)and later modulated by the Pacific-North American teleconnection(PNA)-triggered East Asian ridge, which enhances the precipitation efficiency through prolonged frontal activity and enhanced cold-warm airmass convergence.Overall,El Niño promotes the development of low-and midlatitude AR activity in East Asia, while La Niña promotes(maritime continental)AR activity in the tropics. This study establishes the“ENSO teleconnection→circulation adjust-ment→East Asian AR response”chain, revealing a cross-seasonal lagged response mechanisms of East Asian AR activity, and provides a theoretical basis for winter and spring climate prediction and extreme precipitation forecasting. 展开更多

Intra-annual climatic variability plays a critical role in regulating wood formation dynamics during the growing season, particularly in seasonally arid regions—such as the Qinling Mountains,China, and Mediterranean forests—where trees exhibit bimodal radial growth patterns as an adaptive response to water stress. While these growth patterns reflect immediate climatic conditions, the role of ecological memory, specifically vegetation growth carryover(VGC)and lagged climate effects(LCEs),remains poorly quantified. We employed the Vaganov–Shashkin(VS)model to analyze intra-annual bimodal growth patterns in two regions and used a vector autoregressive model with impulse response functions to assess the duration and intensity of VGC and LCE on tree-ring growth and remote sensing vegetation indices(leaf area index(LAI)and gross primary productivity(GPP)).Our results revealed bimodal growth patterns with spring and autumn peaks, but the autumn peak occurred earlier in the Qinling Mountains(August–October)than in Mediterranean forests(late September–October).VGC exerted the strongest influence on tree-ring growth in the first year, diminishing significantly after eight years in both regions(p<0.01).Tree-ring growth exhibited positive LCE responses to precipitation and soil moisture but negative responses to temperature(p<0.05).Remote sensing indices(LAI and GPP)displayed stronger VGC effects in the Qinling Mountains than in Mediterranean forests. While both LAI and GPP responded positively to soil moisture,temperature-induced LCE was positive in the Qinling Mountains but negative in the Mediterranean forests(p<0.05).Overall,VGC was the dominant ecological memory effect in both regions. Our results suggest that coupling the VGC and LCE of multiple vegetation growth indicators at multiple scales has the potential to improve the accuracy of global dynamic vegetation models. 展开更多

With the rapid expansion of urban areas, intercity highways have become crucial for daily transportation.Traffic administrators and planners increasingly rely on evaluating high way traffic volume. This paper aims to investigate the relationship between various factors and intercity traffic volume, with a specific focus on exploring the advancing and lagging effects of weather conditions on traffic volume in the districts of urban agglomerations.Using multiple data sources in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, includ ing weather factors(i.e.,rain,temperature,wind,and visibility),traffic factors(i.e.,total traffic volume and travel time),and other factors(i.e.,node degree, hub cities, and time of day),a mixed geographically weighted regression(MGWR)model is applied to examine the spatial heterogeneity of these factors. The results show that intercity traffic volume is influenced by weather, traffic, and other factors.Additionally, the advancing and lagging effects of different weather factors exhibit spatial heterogeneity across districts. Moreover, the weather lagging effect has a more significant impact than the advancing effect on intercity traffic volume. These findings provide valuable insights into the impact of weather on intercity travel volume and offer precise traffic guidance for intercity travelers. 展开更多

Understanding the evolution and lag effects of droughts is critical to effective drought warning and water resources management. However, due to limited hydrological data, few studies have examined hydrological droughts and their lag time from meteorological droughts at a daily scale. In this study, precipitation data were collected to calculate the standardized precipitation index(SPI),and runoff data simulated by the variable infiltration capacity(VIC)model were utilized to compute the standardized runoff index(SRI).The three-threshold run theory was used to identify drought characteristics in China. These drought characteristics were utilized to investigate spatiotemporal variations, seasonal trends, and temporal changes in areas affected by meteorological and hydrological droughts.Additionally, the interconnections and lag effects between meteorological and hydrological droughts were explored. The results indicated that(1)drought occurred during approximately 28%of the past 34 years in China;(2)drought conditions tended to worsen in autumn and weaken in winter;(3)drought-affected areas shifted from northwest to northeast and finally to southern China;and(4)the correlation between meteorological and hydrological droughts was lower in the northwest and higher in the southeast, with all correlation coefficients exceeding 0.7.The lag times between meteorological and hydrological droughts were longest(5 d)in the Yangtze River,Yellow River, and Hai River basins, and shortest(0 d)in the Tarim River Basin. This study provides a scientific basis for effective early warning of droughts. 展开更多

The Qinba Mountains are climatically and ecologically recognized as the north-south transitional zone of China.Analysis of its phenology is critical for comprehending the response of vegetation to climatic change. We retrieved the start of spring phenology(SOS)of eight forest communities from the MODIS products and adopted it as an indicator for spring phenology.Trend analysis, partial correlation analysis, and GeoDetector were employed to reveal the spatio-temporal patterns and climatic drivers of SOS.The results indicated that the SOS presented an advance trend from 2001 to 2020,with a mean rate of−0.473 d yr^(−1).The SOS of most forests correlated negatively with air temperature(TEMP)and positively with precipitation(PRE),suggesting that rising TEMP and increasing PRE in spring would forward and delay SOS,respectively. The dominant factors influencing the sensitivity of SOS to climatic variables were altitude, forest type, and latitude, while the effects of slope and aspect were relatively minor. The response of SOS to climatic factors varied significantly in space and among forest communities, partly due to the influence of altitude, slope, and aspect. 展开更多

Dynamic disturbances certainly reduce shear strength of rock joints, yet the mechanism needs deeper explanation. We investigate the shear behavior of a rough basalt joint by conducting laboratory shear experiments.Constant and superimposed oscillating normal loads are applied at the upper block.Meanwhile, the bottom block moves at a constant shear rate.We investigate the shear behavior by:1)altering the normal load oscillation frequency with a same shear rate,2)altering the shear rate with a same normal load oscillation frequency, and 3)altering the normal load oscillation frequency and shear rate simultaneously with a constant ratio. The results show that the oscillating normal load reduces the coefficient of friction(COF).The reduce degree of COF increases with higher shear rate, decreases when increasing normal load oscillation frequency, and keeps constant if the special ratio,v/f(shear rate divided by normal oscillation frequency),is constant. Moreover,we identify a time lag between peak normal load and peak shear load. And the lagging proportion increases with higher shear rate, and decreases with larger static COF.Our results imply that a lower creep rate with a higher normal load oscillation frequency easily destabilizes the creeping fault zones. 展开更多

The Madden-Julian Oscillation(MJO)is a key atmospheric component connecting global weather and climate. It func-tions as a primary source for subseasonal forecasts.Previous studies have highlighted the vital impact of oceanic processes on MJO propagation. However, few existing MJO prediction approaches adequately consider these factors. This study determines the critical region for the oceanic processes affecting MJO propagation by utilizing 22-year Climate Forecast System Reanalysis data.By intro-ducing surface and subsurface oceanic temperature within this critical region into a lagged multiple linear regression model, the MJO forecasting skill is considerably optimized. This optimization leads to a 12 h enhancement in the forecasting skill of the first principal component and efficiently decreases prediction errors for the total predictions.Further analysis suggests that, during the years in which MJO events propagate across the Maritime Continent over a more southerly path, the optimized statistical forecasting model obtains better improvements in MJO prediction. 展开更多
