The basic idea is that language-activity, most typically, is a kind of rational (and purposive) social interaction governed by the principle of co-operation. In what may now be regarded as his classic formulation of this principle, Grice recognized several kinds of co-operation which he grounded under the headings of quantity, quality, relation and manner. Each of these comprises a set of one or more subprinciples, formulated by Grice as prescriptive maxim, which participants normally obey, but may on occasion flout or violate. Those were analyzed and given examples in sentences and text in this paper.展开更多

During the ‘Golden Age of Pure Pragmatics'(GAPP), the answer to this question was straightforwardly negative. In other words, pragmatic intrusion into the semantic content of what is said is not allowed. But time has moved on. It has now been generally accepted in both the philosophy of language and linguistics that contra this ‘received' view, pragmatics and in particular conversational implicature or a variant of it like explicature or impliciture can encroach upon the semantic content of a sentence uttered, and to a less extent that some conversational implicatures may not be cancelled. This article presents a critical discussion and a neo-Gricean analysis of pragmatic and especially conversational implicatural penetration into the semantic content of a sentence uttered, focusing on what Levinson has called intrusive constructions.展开更多

It is the unity of what is said and what is implicated. Grice's theory of conversational implicature provides some explicit account of how it is possible to mean more than what is literally expressed by the conventional sense of the linguistic expressions uttered. Using this theory, we can infer the speaker's real attention, appreciate figure of speech in literary work, and improve our communicative competence.展开更多

Since the dialogue is one of the basic ways to shape characters in literary works, the analysis of dialogues, especially that of those contradictory dialogues helps better analyze the novel itself. This paper analyzes different conversational implicatures in the typical dialogues in Sense and Sensibility, in order to help us to understand character differences, and to further understand the novel’ s theme. Through the analysis, this paper finds that there exist many indirect expressions in the dialogues in Sense and Sensibility, which reflect that characters violate the four maxims of Cooperative Principle in order to implicitly express their true thoughts and avoid such unpleasant communicational effects as embarrassment and conflict.展开更多

Through the analysis of representative dialogues which obey and violate the maxims respectively, this paper concludes that speakers, by appropriately violating the maxims and unconsciously observing the maxims of the CP, manage to achieve humorous effects and conversational implicature. Meanwhile, this paper aims to help people express themselves appropriately to avoid pragmatic failures and achieve the goal of communication.展开更多
