This study contests the prevalent perception of graffiti writing,especially tagging and bombing,as meaningless vandalism.It contends that graffiti is a form of expression with intrinsic political implications.Leveragi...This study contests the prevalent perception of graffiti writing,especially tagging and bombing,as meaningless vandalism.It contends that graffiti is a form of expression with intrinsic political implications.Leveraging the notion of spatial justice and Jacques Ranciere's philosophy,I demonstrate how graffiti reclaims urban visibility against the commercial monopoly of visibility in public spaces and challenges the inequitable allocation of opportunities for self-expression in modern cities.Despite writers'common denial of political motives,their actions may be interpreted as manifestations of resistance within wider sociospatial conflicts.This study situates grffti within discussions of political art,spatial commodification,and everyday resistance,proposing a normative framework for viewing the art of the urban signature as an activity that redefines"the community that speaks."展开更多

Nevada is one of the major states that are currently suffering from graffiti problem. It was estimated that graffiti costs Southern Nevada around $30 million per year. The major highway structures that were suffering ...Nevada is one of the major states that are currently suffering from graffiti problem. It was estimated that graffiti costs Southern Nevada around $30 million per year. The major highway structures that were suffering from graffiti were bridges, sound walls, retaining walls and traffic signs. Removing graffiti from these infrastructures was a big challenge to the maintenance division of Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT). Thus, the department was looking for cost effective proactive countermeasures to prevent graffiti on highway infrastructure. This study first identified a spectrum of proactive countermeasures, and then evaluated them by conducting a cost-benefit analysis. Pedestrian fencing and chain link fence were found to be cost effective countermeasures for preventing graffiti on bridges and sound walls. However, for relative long sound walls, the chain link becomes less cost effective. Rat guard was found to be cost effective for road signs;however, it was more useful for traffic signs that are located in the area where the taggers cannot find the way to bypass the rat guard. Coating and landscaping were found to be cost effective for small structures. The security camera countermeasure was not cost effective at the locations where the reduction in graffiti was small. The software for spectrometers was relatively high cost and might hinder the cost effectiveness of this countermeasure. To reduce the cost of the software, developing the software internally could be adopted. And finally, the electronic database was recommended since it was not difficult to develop and maintain.展开更多

Optimization of Silicone polyacrylate concentration in neat PU was done b...Polyurethane based anti-graffiti coatings have been developed by incorporating varying amounts of OH-functional Silicone modified polyacrylate. Optimization of Silicone polyacrylate concentration in neat PU was done by testing its performance for graffiti resistance. Tests which include static contact angle measurements with water and spray paint, visual inspection of stain removal and color change measurements were performed. It was observed that 5 wt % of Silicone polyacrylate in the neat PU showed 95% stain removability. These coatings showed excellent graffiti resistance but poor mechanical properties. Hence modification of these coatings was done by nano-particle incorporation. Nano-silica particle concentration was optimized for surface mechanical properties such as surface hardness, elastic modulus and scratch resistance. FEG-TEM revealed that nano-silica particles were uniformly distributed over the surface. 5 wt % nano-silica particle additions in PU-5 wt % silicone polyacrylate base showed superior mechanical properties than other concentrations. Color change measurements showed that nano-silica particle addition had no effect on its graffiti resistance. Hence PU-5 wt % silicone polyacrylate, 5 wt % nano-silica showed excellent graffiti resistance and mechanical properties.展开更多
