The development of reading and writing ability in English are the major goals in College English Curriculum Requirements(2020).The paper discusses the importance of discourse coherence in teaching reading and writing....The development of reading and writing ability in English are the major goals in College English Curriculum Requirements(2020).The paper discusses the importance of discourse coherence in teaching reading and writing.Some parts from textbook Going Global(Elementary)are used as examples to discuss the issue.Coherence is very crucial in reading and writing process and some processing strategies are suggested to better learners’discourse understanding.The paper addresses the issue of local and global coherence and then proceed to analyze the teaching material form Going Global.It is emphasized that learners’consciousness about local and global coherence should be raised in both their reading and writing process.And some teaching implications and learning strategies are suggested based on the discussion.展开更多
In the era of ever-deepening globalization,the importance of Second Language Acquisition(SLA)has grown increasingly conspicuous.Discourse coherence,as the fundamental unit in language communication,serves not only as ...In the era of ever-deepening globalization,the importance of Second Language Acquisition(SLA)has grown increasingly conspicuous.Discourse coherence,as the fundamental unit in language communication,serves not only as a crucial metric of a language user’s proficiency but also as a core component for attaining effective cross-cultural communication.Nonetheless,within the current second language teaching practices,learners commonly encounter the issue of inadequate coherence in discourse understanding and production.This study conducts a comprehensive review of the mechanism of discourse coherence in SLA and the corresponding teaching strategies.By synthesizing Halliday’s cohesion theory,van Dijk’s global-local coherence model,and a dynamic coherence analysis framework grounded in computational linguistics,this paper puts forward staged and differentiated teaching strategies.These strategies place emphasis on striking a balance between formfocused and function-oriented training.Moreover,intelligent writing assessment tools(such as Tool for the Automatic Analysis of Cohesion(TAACO))are introduced to optimize the teaching feedback mechanism.The research findings indicate that systematic coherence-based teaching can significantly enhance learners’comprehensive language application capabilities and foster the coordinated development of their listening,speaking,reading,and writing skills.展开更多
This paper describes an action research project undertaken to look into the effectiveness of tasks designed to raise learners' awareness of different writing modes in terms of coherence between English and Chinese...This paper describes an action research project undertaken to look into the effectiveness of tasks designed to raise learners' awareness of different writing modes in terms of coherence between English and Chinese.The goal was to test whether tasks and direct instructions aimed at promoting learner awareness of coherence differences and coherence devices at the discourse level had any impact on the students' writing performance.Results and feedbacks from the participants in the experiment shows that it was a success because the students were better helped to organize the compositions on the English discourse patterns and compose smoother English writings.The paper ends with suggestions to implement conscious-raising instructions among Chinese colleges.展开更多
