Morphology, the study of shapes or forms, when applied to tourism, emphasizes the multifarious spatial practices between morphological elements and tourism activities. However, existing literature on morphology in the context of tourism usually only focuses on a single or a limited number of study areas, overlooking common or even universal patterns across various tourism destinations. To address this gap,we utilize geospatial big data and present a case study on the morphology of 406“AAAAA”-rated scenic areas in China.A framework based on“points”,“lines”,“planes”,and“solids”was designed to systematically organize and analyze morphological elements across scenic areas. The findings provide valuable insights for tourism planning and development, such as the co-occurrence of dense road networks and fragmented landscapes within scenic areas,as well as the resourcecontext-influenced(cultural or natural)associations between morphological features and tourism indicators. This research provides valuable strategic guidance for more effective and informed tourism development while acknowledging the trade-offs between generalizability and local specificity. 展开更多

To address the contradiction between the rapid development of ski tourism and effective protection of the ecological environment, this study constructed the DPSIR-EES(Drive-Pressures-State-Impact-Response-Environment-Economy-Society)model and Ski Tourism Destination Ecological Security System(STDESS)framework system. They form an integrated methodology system based on the“entropy weighting-hierarchical analysis-gray correlation projection”composite weighting method that can be used to clarify the intrinsic mechanism of ecological security in ski tourism destinations.Taking Chongli as a case study, this study evaluated the evolution of its ecological security from 1995 to 2023,predicted the ecological security early warning levels from 2024 to 2050,and analyzed the mechanism of influences on regional ecological security. The findings indicate that the ecological security of ski tourism destinations shows a significant“stepped leap–dynamic equilibrium”evolutionary path. The dynamic response mechanism of the subsystems is characterized by significant heterogeneity. The ecological security early warning system revealed the temporal and sequential differentiation of risk transmission. The factors influencing ecological security show the significant dual dominance of policy and climate. This paper enhances the applicability of ecological security systems within ski tourism contexts by analyzing their evolutionary characteristics, predicted future changes and impact factors, and it provides an effective case study for ecological improvement. 展开更多

Climate change exacerbates tourism emergencies, making it increasingly critical to enhance mitigation and adaptation capacity to alleviate extreme climate's impacts during tourism. Climate-induced impacts and threats in mountainous tourism areas are more challenging given complex terrains and multiple risk sources. Prior studies have focused on assessing climate-related impacts in mountainous tourism areas, while limited studies have investigated the emergency rescue capacity of mountainous tourism areas. This largely constrains decision makers to adopt proper solutions to enhance emergency rescue capacity. To address this research challenges, this study aims to assess emergency rescue capability through an empirical study of the Wulong Karst Tourism Destination(WKTD) area in Chongqing, China. In particular, based on road network and emergency response facility data, the accessibility of road network was delineated by the Spatial Design Network Analysis(s DNA) model. The results indicate that fire and medical rescue facilities were extremely limited and their service coverage was irregular. Valleys significantly narrowed rescue facilities' service area and weakened their functional connection. With the vital 60-minute timeframe, the closeness and betweenness analyses revealed the low accessibility of global rescue roads, while relatively high accessibility of small-scale vehicle and pedestrian rescue roads. The Mean Crow Flight(MCF) and Diversion Ratio(DR) analyses verified that the accessibility of road rescue services was impeded by mountainous terrain. Overall, this study informs solutions pertaining to rescue and disaster mitigation in mountainous tourism areas. 展开更多

In the information age,the movement of livelihood factors between urban and rural areas, particularly involving farmers in rural tourism destinations, has stimulated the spatial revitalization and functional renewal of these destinations, thereby facilitating the advancement of rural revitalization. The examination of livelihood strategy selection among farmers in rural tourist destinations during the information age is a critical scientific inquiry for the sustainable development of rural tourism. This research holds substantial significance for enhancing the livelihood capabilities of farmers and contributing to the revitalization of rural industries. This study utilizes Xijiang Miao Village as a case study to conduct an in-depth analysis of farmers’livelihood strategy selection through the application of the entropy evaluation method and the binary logistic regression model. The findings indicate that the robust development of rural tourism has led to significant alterations in the original composition of livelihood capital in tourist destinations.Currently, four distinct types of livelihoods have been identified:agricultural-based,migrantwork-oriented,tourism-specialized,and tourism-supplemented.Due to the uneven distribution of livelihood capital, the predominant livelihood modes for farmers in rural tourism destinations remain the agricultural-based and tourism-supplemented types.Human capital and economic capital are the primary factors influencing the strategic choices made by farmers. In this context,a livelihood selection strategy for farmers in rural tourist destinations, specifically in Xijiang Miao Village,is proposed, taking into account the background of rural informatization. 展开更多

This paper presents a new perspective on the nature of destination competition in spatial interaction models. The concept of destinations competing with one another on the basis of their spatial proximity to each other is compared with an alternative point of view which argues that competition takes place on the basis of similarities in the spatial influences of competing destinations on decision makers at origins. Potential movers at an origin are facing a set of destinations which compete for their attention. This paper argues that the movers' choices are conditioned by the relative size and number of influences they see (where influence is directly proportional to destination size and inversely proportional to distance). A small amount of supporting empirical evidence concerning recreational day trips, and population migration, is presented. 展开更多

Destination management is a key issue of all overall models of destinations' competitiveness and seems to be a "panacea" in those countries, which introduces the tool-system in the near past, so as to support the destinations (national/regional or local level) to keep up with keen competition, mainly in the Central-Eastern and Balkan region. The culture of cooperation holds difficulties in this region. The lack of trust as well as cooperation in bigger groups can be drawn back to the distrust business culture typical in these countries, and the so-called group collectivism (a phenomenon of building trust in small groups based on personal contacts). The main focus of this paper is to summarize the theoretical approaches to destinations' competitiveness and destination management and to summarize the results of two case studies concerning a destination facing keen competition or escaping from a decline. The main research question is: "What kind of role can (could) destination management play in destinations' competitiveness in a turbulent environment?". As a result of this research, the differentiated analysis of management-oriented view of destinations' competitiveness was carried out, as well as crystallizing the key success/failure factors of destination management. 展开更多

According to the complex adaptive systems theory, tourist destinations may be regarded as complex adaptive systems formed by multiple adaptive agent interactions and composed of an agent system, tourist attraction subsystem, tourist service facility subsystem, and external environment system. This paper explores the spatial evolutionary progress of the Southern Anhui tourist area. The period 1979 to 1990 comprised the formation stage of spatial agglomerates, during which tourist attractions centering on Huangshan Scenic Area and Jiuhuashan Scenic Area were gradually exploited and formed scale agglomeration;tourism spatial structure began to show the characteristics of agglomeration development, and Gini indexes of the number of tourists and tourism revenue increased significantly from 0.26 to 0.29, and from 0.33 to 0.35, respectively. From 1991 to 2008, the system experienced a growth stage in which Huangshan Scenic Area and Jiuhuashan Scenic Area were further developed with improved tourist service facilities. Rapid development of Xidi-Hongcun Scenic Area and establishment of Fantawild Tourist Area promoted the formation of more spatial agglomerates with larger scales;Gini indexes of the number of tourists and tourism revenue presented fluctuating changes, reaching low points of 0.15 and 0.25 in 2000 and 0.12 and 0.22 in 2007, respectively. From 2009 to the present day, the system has remained in a blowout-development stage, during which non-linear interactions among agents are strengthened;various emerging development factors generate cultural tourism, vacation tourism, rural tourism and other new tourism products jointly with traditional development factors. New tourism products form a large number of new spatial agglomerates that are interconnected, accelerating the spatial flow of tourists and tourism revenue and reducing the differences in tourism development levels within the region;Gini indexes of the number of tourists and tourism revenue declined steadily from 0.17 and 0.23 in 2009 to 0.12 and 0.15 in 2016. 展开更多

People′s environmental tropism has an effect on their understanding of tourism-nature relationship, and also influences their attitudes to natural resources utilization and environmental protection.Taking Jiuzhaigou National Park of China as a study case, the authors conducted some quantitative analyses with the tools of SPSS 16.0 and LISREL 8.7,to explore the influence of tourists′ environmental tropism on their attitudes to tourism and nature conservation in the natural tourist destination.Three hypotheses and the theoretic model of influences of tourists′ environmental tropism on their attitudes to tourism and nature conservation have been tested and accepted based on the Structural Equation Model analysis on survey data collected in Jiuzhaigou National Park of China. Some conclusions were drawn as follows: 1) tourists′ human-prioritized concept influences their cognition to tourism-nature relationship. This concept has a positive influence on their supportive attitudes to tourism, but a negative influence on their attitudes to nature conservation;2) tourists′ human-nature coordination concept has a positive influence on their supportive attitudes to both tourism and nature conservation, especially to the latter. This paper generally proves that human′s environmental tropism does have an influence on their attitudes to tourism and nature conservation in natural tourist destinations. 展开更多

From a sustainability perspective, achieving greater efficiencies in environmental waste management is at the heart of current academic discussion on climate change science. Over the last few decades the tourism industry has developed exponentially and is now considered one of the most dynamic economic activities worldwide. Solid waste is a commonly identified and ever increasing aspect of tourism;the improper management of which can lead to substantial and irreversible direct and indirect environmental, economic and social impacts. However, the management of solid waste in tourism dominated island communities is particularly problematic due to climatic conditions, topography, financial restraints, planning issues, changing consumption patterns, transient population, and seasonal variations in solid waste quantity and composition. In addition, there is often a lack of momentum to implement new initiatives and programs as stakeholders involved in the design, construction and operation of tourist resorts have conflicts of interest. Using information gathered from key informant interviews, participation observations and literature reviews, this article appraises current waste management practices in four European tourist destinations, namely: Mallorca, Tenerife, Kefalonia and Rhodes. Findings indicate that, although there are signs of compliance with global best practice, a variety of locally-based measures need to be implemented to enhance sustainability. 展开更多

Together with the main aim of preserving nature, national parks are also expected to play an important role for the local communities, driving economic activities toward the lens of sustainable development. This contribution aims to present an exploratory study on the relationship between the presence of a protected mountain area, the Gran Paradiso National Park(GPNP),in the North West of the Italian Alps, and the classification of tourism destinations, according to Weaver model of destination management.Starting from the model, the authors provide a quantitative analysis using a set of variables and indicators to comprehensively assess the differing patterns assumed by the municipalities within the borders of the GPNP and those that are not.The provisional results illustrate that the municipalities within the border of a protected area are more likely to be grouped alongside the sustainable mountain destinations.Meanwhile, research outcomes confirm that a protected area does not necessarily contrast the tourism industry but instead may boost local development by driving it within the borders of the sustainable development, switching from the area’s only preservation function to a flywheel for the local communities. 展开更多
