Semi-Direct Visual Odometry and Mapping System with RGB-D Camera

In this paper a semi-direct visual odometry and mapping system is proposed with a RGB-D camera,which combines the merits of both feature based and direct based methods.The presented system directly estimates the camera motion of two consecutive RGB-D frames by minimizing the photometric error.To permit outliers and noise,a robust sensor model built upon the t-distribution and an error function mixing depth and photometric errors are used to enhance the accuracy and robustness.Local graph optimization based on key frames is used to reduce the accumulative error and refine the local map.The loop closure detection method,which combines the appearance similarity method and spatial location constraints method,increases the speed of detection.Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves higher accuracy on the motion estimation and environment reconstruction compared to the other state-of-the-art methods. Moreover,the proposed approach works in real-time on a laptop without a GPU,which makes it attractive for robots equipped with limited computational resources. 展开更多

Knowledge-mapping visual analysis of formation research in connected and autonomous vehicles

Connected and autonomous vehicle formation(CAVF)technology is considerably important for improving transportation efficiency,optimizing traffic flow,and reduc-ing energy consumption.Despite the extensive research con-ducted on trajectory tracking control and other aspects of CAVF,the quality of the extant literature varies consider-ably,and research content remains scattered.To better pro-mote the sustainable and healthy development of the CAVF field,this paper employs the mapping knowledge domain(MKD)methodology to comprehensively review and visual-ize the current research status in this domain.Based on this review,research themes,hotspots,research challenges,and future development directions are proposed.The findings suggest that the research on CAVF can be categorized into three primary developmental stages.China and the United States are the primary countries conducting CAVF research.There is a positive correlation between economic develop-ment and the generation of scientific research outcomes.Re-search institutions are predominantly concentrated in univer-sities.The field exhibits significant interdisciplinary and inte-gration characteristics,forming key research personnel and teams.It is expected that future research will concentrate on topics such as deep learning,trajectory optimization,energy management strategy,mixed vehicle platoon,and other re-lated subjects.Research on cognition-driven intelligent for-mation decision-making mechanisms,resilience-oriented for-mation safety assurance systems,multiobjective collabora-tive formation optimization strategies,and digital twin-driven formation system validation platforms represents key future development directions. 展开更多

Fuzzy Logic Based Perceptual Image Hashing Algorithm in Malaysian Banknotes Detection System for the Visually Impaired

Visually impaired persons have difficulty in business that dealing with banknote.This paper proposed a Malaysian banknotes detection system using image processing technology and fuzzy logic algorithm for the visually impaired.The Malaysian banknote reader will first capture the inserted banknote image,sending it to the cloud server for image processing via Wi-Fi medium.The cloud server is established to receive the banknote image sending from the banknote reader,processing them using perceptual hashing based image searching and fuzzy logic algorithm,then return the detected banknote’s value results back to the banknote reader.The banknote reader will display the results in terms of voice message played on the mini speaker attached on it,to allow visually impaired persons knowing the banknote’s value.This hardware mechanism reduces the size and costs for the banknote reader carried by the visually impaired persons.Experimental results showed that this Malaysian banknotes detection system reached an accuracy beyond 95%by running test on 600 different worn,torn and new Malaysian banknotes.After the banknote image being taken by the banknote reader’s camera,the system able to detect the banknote value in about 480 mili-seconds to 560 mili-seconds for a single sided banknote recognition.The banknotes detection speed was also comparable with human observers reading banknotes,with the response of 1.0908 second per banknote slight difference reading time.The IoT and image processing concepts were successfully blended and it provides an alternative to aid the visually impaired person their daily business transaction activities in a better way. 展开更多

Emerging nano-devices with the corresponding nano-architectures are expected to supplement or even replace conventional lithography-based CMOS integrated circuits, while, they are also facing the serious challenge of high defect rates. In this paper, a new weighted coverage is defined as one of the most important evaluation criteria of various defecttolerance logic mapping algorithms for nanoelectronic crossbar architectures functional design. This new criterion is proved by experiments that it can calculate the number of crossbar modules required by the given logic function more accurately than the previous one presented by Yellambalase et al. Based on the new criterion, a new effective mapping algorithm based on genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed. Compared with the state-of-the-art greedy mapping algorithm, the proposed algorithm shows pretty good effectiveness and robustness in experiments on testing problems of various scales and defect rates, and superior performances are observed on problems of large scales and high defect rates. 展开更多

Purpose: We present a systematic review of the literature concerning major aspects of science mapping to serve two primary purposes: First, to demonstrate the use of a science mapping approach to perform the review so that researchers may apply the procedure to the review of a scientific domain of their own interest, and second, to identify major areas of research activities concerning science mapping, intellectual milestones in the development of key specialties, evolutionary stages of major specialties involved, and the dynamics of transitions from one specialty to another.Design/methodology/approach: We first introduce a theoretical framework of the evolution of a scientific specialty. Then we demonstrate a generic search strategy that can be used to construct a representative dataset of bibliographic records of a domain of research. Next, progressively synthesized co-citation networks are constructed and visualized to aid visual analytic studies of the domain's structural and dynamic patterns and trends. Finally, trajectories of citations made by particular types of authors and articles are presented to illustrate the predictive potential of the analytic approach.Findings: The evolution of the science mapping research involves the development of a number of interrelated specialties. Four major specialties are discussed in detail in terms of four evolutionary stages: conceptualization, tool construction, application, and codification. Underlying connections between major specialties are also explored. The predictive analysis demonstrates citations trajectories of potentially transformative contributions.Research limitations: The systematic review is primarily guided by citation patterns in the dataset retrieved from the literature. The scope of the data is limited by the source of the retrieval, i.e. the Web of Science, and the composite query used. An iterative query refinement is possible if one would like to improve the data quality, although the current approach serves our purpose adequately. More in-depth analyses of each specialty would be more revealing by incorporating additional methods such as citation context analysis and studies of other aspects of scholarly publications.Practical implications: The underlying analytic process of science mapping serves many practical needs, notably bibliometric mapping, knowledge domain visualization, and visualization of scientific literature. In order to master such a complex process of science mapping, researchers often need to develop a diverse set of skills and knowledge that may span multiple disciplines. The approach demonstrated in this article provides a generic method for conducting a systematic review.Originality/value: Incorporating the evolutionary stages of a specialty into the visual analytic study of a research domain is innovative. It provides a systematic methodology for researchers to achieve a good understanding of how scientific fields evolve, to recognize potentially insightful patterns from visually encoded signs, and to synthesize various information so as to capture the state of the art of the domain. 展开更多

Taking the Changjiang(Yangtze) Valley as an example, on the basis of revealing up the integrated mechanism on the formations of its natural disasters and its distributing law, thereafter, the paper relies on the MFIVS technique, adopts two top-down and bottom-up approaches to study a comprehensive division of natural disasters. There are about 253 million people with visual impairment worldwide.Many of them use a white cane and/or a guide dog as the mobility tool for daily travel.Despite decades of efforts,electronic navigation aid that can replace white cane is still research in progress.In this paper,we propose an RGB-D camera based visual positioning system(VPS)for real-time localization of a robotic navigation aid(RNA)in an architectural floor plan for assistive navigation.The core of the system is the combination of a new 6-DOF depth-enhanced visual-inertial odometry(DVIO)method and a particle filter localization(PFL)method.DVIO estimates RNA’s pose by using the data from an RGB-D camera and an inertial measurement unit(IMU).It extracts the floor plane from the camera’s depth data and tightly couples the floor plane,the visual features(with and without depth data),and the IMU’s inertial data in a graph optimization framework to estimate the device’s 6-DOF pose.Due to the use of the floor plane and depth data from the RGB-D camera,DVIO has a better pose estimation accuracy than the conventional VIO method.To reduce the accumulated pose error of DVIO for navigation in a large indoor space,we developed the PFL method to locate RNA in the floor plan.PFL leverages geometric information of the architectural CAD drawing of an indoor space to further reduce the error of the DVIO-estimated pose.Based on VPS,an assistive navigation system is developed for the RNA prototype to assist a visually impaired person in navigating a large indoor space.Experimental results demonstrate that:1)DVIO method achieves better pose estimation accuracy than the state-of-the-art VIO method and performs real-time pose estimation(18 Hz pose update rate)on a UP Board computer;2)PFL reduces the DVIO-accrued pose error by 82.5%on average and allows for accurate wayfinding(endpoint position error≤45 cm)in large indoor spaces. 展开更多

Objective: To describe the revolution and research status of Advances in Psychological Science. Methods: A total of 3060 articles published in Advances in Psychological Science from 1983 to 2014 were analyzed with the information visualization method using Citespace software from the aspects of pub- lications, cited frequency and downloads, funding, organizations, authors and keywords. Results: The results showed that the amount of literature published annually had an upward tendency, and 49.4% of the papers were supported by national or provincial projects. Institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the normal universities were rated in the forefront of the sci- entific research output. Xiting Huang, Hong Li and Yuejia Luo were at the top of the list of prolific authors. Conclusions: A new pattern of cooperative development of the theory and application in the field of psychological research is forming. 展开更多

Mapping the risk of winter storm damage using GIS-based fuzzy logic

Abiotic and biotic factors that cause damage to forest trees also threaten the sustainability of forest resources.Although winter storms can be one of the most damaging forces,very few studies have focused on winter storm damage in Turkey.To prevent or minimize storm damage,we must evaluate the factors that influence the degree of damage and develop storm risk maps for the forested areas.Here,a GIS-based mathematical model(fuzzy logic)was used to develop such a risk map by considering risk factors such as tree species,tree age,crown density,site quality,topographical features(elevation,slope,aspect),climatic variables(wind,precipitation),and soil depth.The Alabarda Forest Enterprise Chief within the borders of Tavs?anl?Forest Enterprise Directorate was selected as the study area due to high occurrence of storm damage in the region during winter 2015–2016.For model verification,the risk map of storm damage was compared to the actual areal distribution of storm damage reported by the Enterprise Directorate.The model based on fuzzy logic indicated that slightly more than half of the study area(52.49%)was under very low storm damage risk,28.12%was under low risk and 19.19%was classified as high risk.A very small portion of the total study area was classified as very high risk.These results indicated a close relation with the storm damage map generated using Tavsanl?FED records.The results revealed that the most effective risk predictors for overall storm damage risk were wind direction and speed,followed by slope and site quality factors. 展开更多

BACKGROUND In the rapidly evolving landscape of psychiatric research,2023 marked another year of significant progress globally,with the World Journal of Psychiatry(WJP)experiencing notable expansion and influence.AIM To conduct a comprehensive visualization and analysis of the articles published in the WJP throughout 2023.By delving into these publications,the aim is to deter-mine the valuable insights that can illuminate pathways for future research endeavors in the field of psychiatry.METHODS A selection process led to the inclusion of 107 papers from the WJP published in 2023,forming the dataset for the analysis.Employing advanced visualization techniques,this study mapped the knowledge domains represented in these papers.RESULTS The findings revealed a prevalent focus on key topics such as depression,mental health,anxiety,schizophrenia,and the impact of coronavirus disease 2019.Additionally,through keyword clustering,it became evident that these papers were predominantly focused on exploring mental health disorders,depression,anxiety,schizophrenia,and related factors.Noteworthy contributions hailed authors in regions such as China,the United Kingdom,United States,and Turkey.Particularly,the paper garnered the highest number of citations,while the American Psychiatric Association was the most cited reference.CONCLUSION It is recommended that the WJP continue in its efforts to enhance the quality of papers published in the field of psychiatry.Additionally,there is a pressing need to delve into the potential applications of digital interventions and artificial intelligence within the discipline. 展开更多

Visual Disorders in Neuroborreliosis: An Electro-physiological Investigation

The study was based on the investigation of... Visual disorders may occur in Neuroborreliosis, Multiple Sclerosis, and many other diseases. The aim of this work was to find electro-physiological cues for differentiation. The study was based on the investigation of 178 patients presenting visual disorders. Out of them 57 were affected by Neuroborreliosis (demonstrated by positive serologic investigation: Western Blot and immuno-assay). The electro-physiological research consisted in Electroencephalography (EEG) Mapping and average Visual Evoked Potentials (VEPs) investigation. Characteristic for the Lyme disease was the non-homogenous slowing of the cortical electrical activity, associated with signs of excessive cortical excitability to flash stimulation. In Multiple Sclerosis (MS) there were no similar changes, but signs of sub-cortical white matter lesions. Primary cortical VEP components were significantly attenuated in amplitude in the Lyme disease and delayed in MS. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) showed the presence of not differentiated "demyelization lesions" in all these cases. The electro-physiologic investigation confirms the existence of cerebral (cortical) dysfunction in subjects serologically confirmed with Borrelia infection. It may be used in time for the follow up of the Lyme disease patients. 展开更多

Visualization Analysis for China’s Business Schools Accreditation Studies Based on Knowledge Mapping

BACKGROUND Epidemiological surveys indicate an increasing incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)among children and adolescents worldwide.Due to rapid disease progression,severe long-term cardiorenal complications,a lack of effective treatment strategies,and substantial socioeconomic burdens,it has become an urgent public health issue that requires management and resolution.Adolescent T2DM differs from adult T2DM.Despite a significant increase in our understanding of youth-onset T2DM over the past two decades,the related review and evidence-based content remain limited.AIM To visualize the hotspots and trends in pediatric and adolescent T2DM research and to forecast their future research themes.METHODS This study utilized the terms“children”,“adolescents”,and“type 2 diabetes”,retrieving relevant articles published between 1983 and 2023 from three citation databases within the Web of Science Core Collection(SCI,SSCI,ESCI).Utilizing CiteSpace and VoSviewer software,we analyze and visually represent the annual output of literature,countries involved,and participating institutions.This allows us to predict trends in this research field.Our analysis encompasses co-cited authors,journal overlays,citation overlays,time-zone views,keyword analysis,and reference analysis,etc.RESULTS A total of 9210 articles were included,and the annual publication volume in this field showed a steady growth trend.The United States had the highest number of publications and the highest H-index.The United States also had the most research institutions and the strongest research capacity.The global hot journals were primarily diabetes professional journals but also included journals related to nutrition,endocrinology,and metabolism.Keyword analysis showed that research related to endothelial dysfunction,exposure risk,cardiac metabolic risk,changes in gut microbiota,the impact on comorbidities and outcomes,etc.,were emerging keywords.They have maintained their popularity in this field,suggesting that these areas have garnered significant research interest in recent years.CONCLUSION Pediatric and adolescent T2DM is increasingly drawing global attention,with genes,behaviors,environmental factors,and multisystemic interventions potentially emerging as future research hot spots. 展开更多

The aim of the paper is to identify and explore leading development situation within the research field related to student classroom engagement.Using knowledge mapping tools,this paper conducted the visualization analysis on internationalliteraturein relation to student classroom engagementfrom the Web of Science databases.By combination of the statistical data and visualizationmapping,this paper studied on the research relationship networks and status for the co-authors'countries/institutions,co-citation documents/journalsand co-occurring keywordsbased on the sample datafromliterature.The results indicate that the number ofpublished papershasincreased obviously and expanded graduallysince 2000.Main countries and institutions of researches were the UnitedStates,Australia,United Kingdom,Canada and China in order,and these countries had intense collaboration.The theoretical basis of the research come from education and teaching,psychology.The hotspots of researches fromthe global literature coveredvarious fields including achievement,motivation,behavior,education,performance.As a result of the multidisciplinary integration,many relevant internationalresearch constantly expanded the research scopes,which promoted the combination and development of theories. 展开更多
