The investigations of physical attributes of oceans, including parameters such as heat flow and bathymetry, have garnered substantial attention and are particularly valuable for examining Earth’s thermal structures and dynamic processes.Nevertheless, classical plate cooling models exhibit disparities when predicting observed heat flow and seafloor depth for extremely young and old lithospheres.Furthermore,a comprehensive analysis of global heat flow predictions and regional ocean heat flow or bathymetry data with physical models has been lacking. In this study,we employed power-law models derived from the singularity theory of fractal density to meticulously fit the latest ocean heat flow and bathymetry.Notably,power-law models offer distinct advantages over traditional plate cooling models, showcasing robust self-similarity,scale invariance,or scaling properties, and providing a better fit to observed data. The outcomes of our singularity analysis concerning heat flow and bathymetry across diverse oceanic regions exhibit a degree of consistency with the global ocean spreading rate model. In addition,we applied the similarity method to predict a higher resolution(0.1°×0.1°)global heat flow map based on the most recent heat flow data and geological/geophysical observables refined through linear correlation analysis.Regions displaying significant disparities between predicted and observed heat flow are closely linked to hydrothermal vent fields and active structures. Finally, combining the actual bathymetry and predicted heat flow with the power-law models allows for the quantitative and comprehensive detection of anomalous regions of ocean subsidence and heat flow, which deviate from traditional plate cooling models. The anomalous regions of subsidence and heat flow show different degrees of anisotropy, providing new ideas and clues for further analysis of ocean topography or hydrothermal circulation of mid-ocean ridges. 展开更多

As the dominant seepage channel in rock masses,it is of great significance to study the influence of fracture roughness distribution on seepage and heat transfer in rock masses. In this paper, the fracture roughness distribution functions of the Bakhtiary dam site and Oskarshamn/Forsmark mountain were fitted using statistical methods. The COMSOL Multiphysics finite element software was utilized to analyze the effects of fracture roughness distribution types and empirical formulas for fracture hydraulic aperture on the seepage field and temperature field of rock masses. The results show that:(1)The fracture roughness at the Bakhtiary dam site and Oskarshamn/Forsmark mountain follows lognormal and normal distributions,respectively;(2)For rock masses with the same expected value and standard deviation of fracture roughness, the outflow from rock masses with lognormal distribution of fracture roughness is significantly larger than that of rock masses with normal distribution of fracture roughness;(3)The fracture hydraulic aperture, outflow, and cold front distance of the Li and Jiang model are significantly larger than those of the Barton model;(4)The outflow, hydraulic pressure distribution, and temperature distribution of the Barton model are more sensitive to the fracture roughness distribution type than those of the Li and Jiang model. 展开更多

The heat transfer through a concave permeable fin is analyzed by the local thermal non-equilibrium(LTNE)model.The governing dimensional temperature equations for the solid and fluid phases of the porous extended surface are modeled, and then are nondimensionalized by suitable dimensionless terms.Further, the obtained nondimensional equations are solved by the clique polynomial method(CPM).The effects of several dimensionless parameters on the fin's thermal profiles are shown by graphical illustrations.Additionally, the current study implements deep neural structures to solve physics-governed coupled equations, and the best-suited hyperparameters are attained by comparison with various network combinations. The results of the CPM and physicsinformed neural network(PINN)exhibit good agreement, signifying that both methods effectively solve the thermal modeling problem. 展开更多

Experiments of saturated water flow and heat transfer were conducted for a meter-scale model of regularly fractured granite. The fractured rock model (height 1502.5 ram, width 904 mm, and thickness 300 mm), embedded with two vertical and two horizontal fractures of pre-set apertures, was constructed using 18 pieces of intact granite. The granite was taken from a site currently being investigated for a high-level nuclear waste repository in China. The experiments involved different heat source temperatures and vertical water fluxes in the embedded fractures either open or filled with sand. A finite difference scheme and computer code for calculation of water flow and heat transfer in regularly fractured rocks was developed, verified against both the experimental data and calculations from the TOUGH2 code, and employed for parametric sensitivity analyses. The experiments revealed that, among other things, the temperature distribution was influenced by water flow in the fractures, especially the water flow in the vertical fracture adjacent to the heat source, and that the heat conduction between the neighboring rock blocks in the model with sand-filled fractures was enhanced by the sand, with larger range of influence of the heat source and longer time for approaching asymptotic steady-state than those of the model with open fractures. The temperatures from the experiments were in general slightly smaller than those from the numerical calculations, probably due to the fact that a certain amount of outward heat transfer at the model perimeter was unavoidable in the experiments. The parametric sensitivity analyses indicated that the tem- perature distribution was highly sensitive to water flow in the fractures, and the water temperature in the vertical fracture adjacent to the heat source was rather insensitive to water flow in other fractures. 展开更多

Based on the heat flow data published in 1990 and 2001, a study of the factors influencing the terrestrial heat flow distribution in the China continent and its quantitative expression is carried out using the "Netlike Plastic-Flow" continental dynamics model and the methods of statistic analysis and optimum fitting. The result indicates that the factors influencing the heat flow distribution is classified into two groups, i.e. background and tectonic ones, in which the former mainly involves the non- uniform distribution of mantle heat flow, heat production of radioactive dements in the crust, heattransfer media and hydrothermal circulation, while the latter mainly involves plastic-flow networks and relatively-stable blocks. The plastic-flow network is a manifestation of shear localization in the netlike plastic-flow process in the lower lithosphere, which is composed of two sets of plastic-flow belts (PFBs) intersecting each other and, as one of the basic action regimes, controls the intraplate tectonic deformation. Relatively stable blocks (RSBs), which are the tectonic units with relatively-high viscosities existing in the netlike plastic-flow field, as one of the principal origins, result in the development of large-seale compressional basins. PFB and RSB, as the active and quiet states of tectonic deformation, give rise to the higher and lower heat flow values, respectivdy. The provincial average heat flow in continent can be estimated using the expression qav = q0 + a Pbt-c Pbk, where the three terms of the right side are background heat flow, PFB-positive contribution and RSB-negative contribution, Pbt and Pbk are the PFB- and RSB-coverage ratios, respectively, a is the coefficient of PFB- positive contribution depending mainly on the strain in the lower lithosphere, and c is the coefficient of RSB-negative contribution related mainly to the thickness of the lithosphere, the aseismic-area ratio and the tectonic age. For the major portion of the China continent excluding some of the southeastern region of China, the confidence interval of the provincial average background heat flow is qo=57.25±24.8 mW/m^2 and the PFB-positive- and RSB-negative-contribution coefficients are a=14.8-71.9 mW/m^2 and c=0-25.6 mW/m^2, respectively. The concepts of PFB and RSB effects and the heat flow expression suggested provide a new choice of the approach to the quantitative description of the characteristics of heat flow distribution in continent and their physical mechanisms. 展开更多

Numerical simulation is conducted on the ground of the conjugate mathematical model which includes filtration and heat transfer equations in a porous body and boundary layer equations on its surface. Such an approach enables one to take into account complex interaction between heat and mass transfer in the gasdynamical flow and in the structure subjected to this flow. Thermal performance of a loop heat pipe with two evaporators and two condensers was examined using a lumped network model analysis. Thermosyphon-type vertical loop heat pipe and capillary-pump-type horizontal loop heat pipe were calculated by examining the change of heating rate of two evaporators. Calculation results showed that the vapor and liquid flow rates in the loop heat pipe and the thermal conductance of the heat pipe changed significantly depending on the distribution ratio of the heating rate of the multiple evaporators. The thermal performance of the vertical loop heat pipe with two evaporators was also examined and experimental results of flow direction and thermal conductance of the heat pipe agreed with the analytical results. The lumped network model analysis is therefore considered accurate and preferable for the practical design of a loop heat pipe with multiple evaporators. 展开更多

Aiming at the characteristics of the practical steelmaking process, a hybrid model based on ladle heat sta- tus and artificial neural network has been proposed to predict molten steel temperature. The hybrid model could over- come the difficulty of accurate prediction using a single mathematical model, and solve the problem of lacking the consideration of the influence of ladle heat status on the steel temperature in an intelligent model. By using the hybrid model method, forward and backward prediction models for molten steel temperature in steelmaking process are es- tablished and are used in a steelmaking plant. The forward model, starting from the end-point of BOF, predicts the temperature in argon-blowing station, starting temperature in LF, end temperature in LF and tundish temperature forwards, with the production process evolving. The backward model, starting from the required tundish tempera- ture, calculates target end temperature in LF, target starting temperature in LF, target temperature in argon-blo- wiag station and target BOF end-point temperature backwards. Actual application results show that the models have better prediction accuracy and are satisfying for the process of practical production. 展开更多

A two-dimensional mathematical model was developed to describe the heat transfer and fluid flow in an AC arc zone of a ferrosilicon submerged arc furnace. In this model, the time-dependent conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy in the specified domain of plasma zone were numerically solved by coupling with the Maxwell and Laplace equations for magnetic filed and electric potential, respectively. A control volume-based finite difference method was used to solve the governing equations in cylindrical coordinates. The reliability of the developed model was checked by experimental data from the previous available literature. The results of present model were in good agreement with the given data comparing with other models, because of solving the Maxwell and Laplace equations simul- taneously in order to calculate current density. In addition, parametric studies were carried out to evaluate the effects of electrical current and arc length on flow field and temperature distribution within the arc. According to the computed results, a lower power input led to a higher arc efficiency. 展开更多

Based on Recursive Radial Basis Function(RRBF)neural network, the Reduced Order Model(ROM)of compressor cascade was established to meet the urgent demand of highly efficient prediction of unsteady aerodynamics performance of turbomachinery. One novel ROM called ASA-RRBF model based on Adaptive Simulated Annealing(ASA)algorithm was developed to enhance the generalization ability of the unsteady ROM.The ROM was verified by predicting the unsteady aerodynamics performance of a highly-loaded compressor cascade. The results show that the RRBF model has higher accuracy in identification of the dimensionless total pressure and dimensionless static pressure of compressor cascade under nonlinear and unsteady conditions, and the model behaves higher stability and computational efficiency. However, for the strong nonlinear characteristics of aerodynamic parameters, the RRBF model presents lower accuracy.Additionally, the RRBF model predicts with a large error in the identification of aerodynamic parameters under linear and unsteady conditions. For ASA-RRBF,by introducing a small-amplitude and highfrequency sinusoidal signal as validation sample, the width of the basis function of the RRBF model is optimized to improve the generalization ability of the ROM under linear unsteady conditions.Besides, this model improves the predicting accuracy of dimensionless static pressure which has strong nonlinear characteristics. The ASA-RRBF model has higher prediction accuracy than RRBF model without significantly increasing the total time consumption. This novel model can predict the linear hysteresis of dimensionless static pressure happened in the harmonic condition, but it cannot accurately predict the beat frequency of dimensionless total pressure. 展开更多

Using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model, the effects of street-bottom and building-roof heating on flow in three-dimensional street canyons are investigated. The building and street-canyon aspect ratios are one. In the presence of street-bottom heating, as the street-bottom heating intensity increases, the mean kinetic energy increases in the spanwise street canyon formed by the upwind and downwind buildings but decreases in the lower region of the streamwise street canyon. The increase in momentum due to buoyancy force intensifies mechanically induced flow in the spanwise street canyon. The vorticity in the spanwise street canyon strengthens. The temperature increase is not large because relatively cold above-roof-level air comes into the spanwise street canyon. In the presence of both street-bottom and building-roof heating, the mean kinetic energy rather decreases in the spanwise street canyon. This is caused by the decrease in horizontal flow speed at the roof level, which results in the weakening of the mean flow circulation in the spanwise street canyon. It is found that the vorticity in the spanwise street canyon weakens. The temperature increase is relatively large compared with that in the street-bottom heating case, because relatively warm above-roof-level air comes into the spanwise street canyon. 展开更多

Accurate insight into the heat generation rate(HGR) of lithium-ion batteries(LIBs) is one of key issues for battery management systems to formulate thermal safety warning strategies in advance. For this reason, this paper proposes a novel physics-informed neural network(PINN) approach for HGR estimation of LIBs under various driving conditions.Specifically,a single particle model with thermodynamics(SPMT) is first constructed for extracting the critical physical knowledge related with battery HGR.Subsequently, the surface concentrations of positive and negative electrodes in battery SPMT model are integrated into the bidirectional long short-term memory(BiLSTM) networks as physical information. And combined with other feature variables,a novel PINN approach to achieve HGR estimation of LIBs with higher accuracy is constituted.Additionally, some critical hyperparameters of BiLSTM used in PINN approach are determined through Bayesian optimization algorithm(BOA) and the results of BOA-based BiLSTM are compared with other traditional BiLSTM/LSTM networks.Eventually, combined with the HGR data generated from the validated virtual battery,it is proved that the proposed approach can well predict the battery HGR under the dynamic stress test(DST) and worldwide light vehicles test procedure(WLTP),the mean absolute error under DST is 0.542 kW/m^(3),and the root mean square error under WLTP is1.428 kW/m^(3)at 25℃.Lastly,the investigation results of this paper also show a new perspective in the application of the PINN approach in battery HGR estimation. 展开更多

A modelling study is performed to compare the plasma flow and heat transfer characteristics of low-power arc-heated thrusters (arcjets) for three different propellants: hydrogen, nitrogen and argon. The all-speed SIMPLE algorithm is employed to solve the governing equations, which take into account the effects of compressibility, Lorentz force and Joule heating, as well as the temperature- and pressure-dependence of the gas properties. The temperature, velocity and Mach number distributions calculated within the thruster nozzle obtained with different propellant gases are compared for the same thruster structure, dimensions, inlet-gas stagnant pressure and arc currents. The temperature distributions in the solid region of the anode-nozzle wall are also given. It is found that the flow and energy conversion processes in the thruster nozzle show many similar features for all three propellants. For example, the propellant is heated mainly in the near-cathode and constrictor region, with the highest plasma temperature appearing near the cathode tip; the flow transition from the subsonic to supersonic regime occurs within the constrictor region; the highest axial velocity appears inside the nozzle; and most of the input propellant flows towards the thruster exit through the cooler gas region near the anode-nozzle wall. However, since the properties of hydrogen, nitrogen and argon, especially their molecular weights, specific enthMpies and thermal conductivities, are different, there are appreciable differences in arcjet performance. For example, compared to the other two propellants, the hydrogen arcjet thruster shows a higher plasma temperature in the arc region, and higher axial velocity but lower temperature at the thruster exit. Correspondingly, the hydrogen arcjet thruster has the highest specific impulse and arc voltage for the same inlet stagnant pressure and arc current. The predictions of the modelling are compared favourably with available experimental results. 展开更多

A hybrid identification model based on multilayer artificial neural networks(ANNs) and particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm is developed to improve the simultaneous identification efficiency of thermal conductivity and effective absorption coefficient of semitransparent materials. For the direct model, the spherical harmonic method and the finite volume method are used to solve the coupled conduction-radiation heat transfer problem in an absorbing, emitting, and non-scattering 2D axisymmetric gray medium in the background of laser flash method. For the identification part, firstly, the temperature field and the incident radiation field in different positions are chosen as observables. Then,a traditional identification model based on PSO algorithm is established. Finally, multilayer ANNs are built to fit and replace the direct model in the traditional identification model to speed up the identification process. The results show that compared with the traditional identification model, the time cost of the hybrid identification model is reduced by about 1 000 times.Besides, the hybrid identification model remains a high level of accuracy even with measurement errors. 展开更多

The heat transfer predictions and turbulence parameters are verified against the axis-symmetric free jet impingement measurements and compared with previous other turbulence models, and results show the k-ε-fu model has a good performance in predictions of the local wall heat transfer coefficient, and in agreement with measurements in mean velocity profiles at different radial positions as well. Due to the deterioration of serious energy dilemma,energy-conservation and emission–reduction have been the strategic target in the past decades, thus people have identified the vital importance of higher energy efficiency and the influence of lower carbon development.Since work exchange network is a significant part of energy recovery system, its optima design will have dramatically significant effect on energy consumption reduction in chemical process system. With an extension of the developed transshipment model in isothermal process,a novel step-wise methodology for synthesis of direct work exchange network(WEN)in adiabatic process involving heat integration is first proposed in this paper, where a nonlinear programming(NLP)model is formulated by regarding the minimum utility consumption as objective function and optimizing the initial WEN in accordance with the presented matching rules to get the optimized WEN configuration at first.Furthermore,we focus on the work exchange network synthesis with heat integration to attain the minimal total annual cost(TAC)with the introduction of heat-exchange equipment that is achieved by the following strategies in sequence:introducing heat-exchange equipment directly, adjusting the work quantity of the adjacent utility compressors or expanders, and approximating upper/lower pressure limits consequently to obtain considerable cost savings of expanders or compressors and work utility. Finally,a case taken from the literature is studied to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. 展开更多

A two-equation K-ε turbulent fluid flow model is built to model the heat transfer and fluid flow in gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process of stainless steel S US310 and S US316. This model combines the buoyancy force, lorentz force and marangni force as the driving forces of thefluidflow in the weld pool. The material properties are functions of temperature in this model. The simulated results show that the molten metal flowing outward is mainly caused by the marangoni convection, which makes the weld pool become wider and shallower. The comparison of the weld pool shape of SUS310 and SUS316 shows that the slight differences of the value of thermal conductivity mainly attributes to the difference of the weld pool shape and the distinction of heat transport in laminar and turbulent model makes large diversity in the simulated results. 展开更多

A modelling study is performed to investigate the characteristics of both plasma flow and heat transfer of a laminar non-transferred arc argon plasma torch operated at atmospheric and reduced pressure. It is found that the calculated flow fields and temperature distributions are quite similar for both cases at a chamber pressure of 1.0 atm and 0.1 atm. A fully developed flow regime could be achieved in the arc constrictor-tube between the cathode and the anode of the plasma torch at 1.0 atm for all the flow rates covered in this study. However the flow field could not reach the fully developed regime at 0.1 atm with a higher flow rate. The arc-root is always attached to the torch anode surface near the upstream end of the anode, i.e. the abruptly expanded part of the torch channel, which is in consistence with experimental observation. The surrounding gas would be entrained from the torch exit into the torch interior due to a comparatively large inner diameter of the anode channel compared to that of the arc constrictor-tube. 展开更多

In order to optimize the design of the submerged combustion vaporizer(SCV), an experimental apparatus was set up to investigate the heat transfer character outside the tube bundle in SCV. Several experiments were conducted using water and CO_2 as the heat transfer media in the tubes, respectively. The results indicated that hot air flux, the initial liquid level height and the tube pitch ratio had great influence on the heat transfer coefficient outside the tube bundle(ho). Finally, the air flux associated factor β and height associated factor γ were introduced to propose a new hocorrelation. After verified by experiments using cold water, high pressure CO_2 and liquid N_2 as heat transfer media, respectively, it was found that the biggest deviation between the predicted and the experimental values was less than 25%. 展开更多

Heat transfer in an Eyring-Powell fluid that conducts electricity and flows past an exponentially growing sheet is considered. As the sheet is stretched in the x direction, the flow develops in the region with y>0.The problem is tackled through a set of partial differential equations accounting for Magnetohydrodynamics(MHD),radiation and Joule heating effects, which are converted into a set of equivalent ordinary differential equations through a similarity transformation. The converted problem is solved in MATLAB in the framework a fourth order accurate integration scheme. It is found that the thermal relaxation period is inversely proportional to the thickness of the thermal boundary layer, whereas the Eckert-number displays the opposite trend. As this characteristic number grows, the temperature within the channel increases. 展开更多
