Steroidal alkaloids are the main active components in many medicinal plants and exhibit diverse biological activities.Axillaridine A(AA)is a newly discovered steroidal alkaloid.However,whether AA could suppress osteoc...Steroidal alkaloids are the main active components in many medicinal plants and exhibit diverse biological activities.Axillaridine A(AA)is a newly discovered steroidal alkaloid.However,whether AA could suppress osteoclastogenesis and alleviate ovariectomy-induced bone loss in mice remains unknown.In vitro,AA significantly suppressed the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB)ligand(RANKL)-induced osteoclast differentiation via downregulating the expression of osteoclastogenesis-related marker genes,proteins,and transcriptional regulators,including tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase(TRAP),c-Src,matrix metallopeptidase-9(MMP-9),cathepsin K,nuclear factor of activated T cells,cytoplasmic 1(NFATc1),and c-Fos.This was achieved by blocking RANKL-RANK interaction and inhibiting RANKL-mediated RANK signaling pathways,including NF-κB,AKT,and mitogen-activated protein kinases(MAPKs)in osteoclast precursors.In vivo,AA significantly inhibited the ovariectomized(OVX)-induced body weight gain and blood glucose increase in mice.AA did not adversely affect the histomorphologies,weights,and indices of the kidney and liver in OVX mice.AA effectively ameliorated bone loss in OVX mice by inhibiting osteoclastogenesis.AA significantly inhibited the serum levels of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b(TRACP-5b)and C-telopeptide of type I collagen(CTX-I).AA significantly inhibited the OVX-induced expression of osteoclastogenesis-related marker genes and proteins in the femur.In summary,AA alleviates ovariectomy-induced bone loss in mice by suppressing osteoclastogenesis via inhibition of RANKL-mediated RANK signaling pathways and could be potentially used for the prevention and treatment of osteoclastrelated diseases such as osteoporosis.展开更多

Purpose:Citation-based assessments of countries’research capabilities often misrepresent their ability to achieve breakthrough advancements.These assessments commonly classify Japan as a developing country,which cont...Purpose:Citation-based assessments of countries’research capabilities often misrepresent their ability to achieve breakthrough advancements.These assessments commonly classify Japan as a developing country,which contradicts its prominent scientific standing.The purpose of this study is to investigate the underlying causes of such inaccurate assessments and to propose methods for conducting more reliable evaluations.Design/methodology/approach:The study evaluates the effectiveness of top-percentile citation metrics as indicators of breakthrough research.Using case studies of selected countries and research topics,the study examines how deviations from lognormal citation distributions impact the accuracy of these percentile indicators.A similar analysis is conducted using university data from the Leiden Ranking to investigate citation distribution deviations at the institutional level.Findings:The study finds that inflated lower tails in citation distributions lead to undervaluation of research capabilities in advanced technological countries,as captured by some percentile indicators.Conversely,research-intensive universities exhibit the opposite trend:a reduced lower tail relative to the upper tail,which causes percentile indicators to overestimate their actual research capacity.Research limitations:The descriptions are mathematical facts that are self-evident.Practical implications:The ratios between the number of papers in the global top 10%and 1%by citation count to the total number of papers are commonly used to describe research performance.However,due to variations in citation patterns across countries and institutions with reference to the global pattern,these ratios can be misleading and lose their value as research indicators.Originality/value:Size-independent research performance indicators,obtained as the ratios between paper counts in top percentiles and the total numbers of publications,are widely used by public and private institutions.This study demonstrates that the use of these ratios for research evaluations and country rankings can be highly misleading.展开更多
This paper investigates China's coal price volatility spreaders(CPVSs)from the supply side to locate the volatility source since coal price volatility may destabilize many downstream products'prices or even br...This paper investigates China's coal price volatility spreaders(CPVSs)from the supply side to locate the volatility source since coal price volatility may destabilize many downstream products'prices or even bring uncertainties to macroeconomic output.Especially in the carbon neutrality context,China's coal market is being reconstructed and responding to imbalances between supply and demand;identifying the CPVSs helps alleviate rising market instability and prevent energy-induced system risk.To achieve this objective,we explore causalities among 938 weekly coal prices reported by different coal-producing areas of China from 2006.9.4 to 2021.7.12 using the transfer entropy method.Then,coal price volatility influence is quantified to identify the CPVSs by conjointly using complex network theory and a rank aggregation method.The validity test demonstrates that the proposed hybrid method efficiently identifies the CPVSs as it correlates to many price determinants,e.g.,electricity and coal consumption and generation.The empirical results show that causalities among coal prices changed dramatically in 2016,2018,and 2020,affected by coal decapacity and carbon neutrality policies.Before 2018,coal-producing provinces with strong demand for coal and electricity,e.g.,Jiangxi,Chongqing,and Sichuan,were CPVSs;after 2019,those with comparative advantages in coal supply,e.g.,Gansu and Ningxia,were CPVSs.Overall,the coal market is unstable and sensitive to energy policy and external shocks.Policymakers and market participants are recommended to monitor and manage the CPVSs to improve energy security,avoid policy-induced instability and prevent risks caused by coal price fluctuations.展开更多
