The nozzle is a critical component responsible for generating most of the net thrust in a scramjet engine. The quality of its design directly affects the performance of the entire propulsion system. However, most turbulence models struggle to make accurate predictions for subsonic and supersonic flows in nozzles. In this study,we explored a novel model, the algebraic stress model k-kL-ARSM+J,to enhance the accuracy of turbulence numerical simulations. This new model was used to conduct numerical simulations of the design and off-design performance of a 3D supersonic asymmetric truncated nozzle designed in our laboratory, with the aim of providing a realistic pattern of changes. The research indicates that, compared to linear eddy viscosity turbulence models such as k-kL and shear stress transport(SST),the k-kL-ARSM+J algebraic stress model shows better accuracy in predicting the performance of supersonic nozzles. Its predictions were identical to the experimental values, enabling precise calculations of the nozzle. The performance trends of the nozzle are as follows:as the inlet Mach number increases, both thrust and pitching moment increase, but the rate of increase slows down.Lift peaks near the design Mach number and then rapidly decreases. With increasing inlet pressure, the nozzle thrust, lift, and pitching moment all show linear growth. As the flight altitude rises, the internal flow field within the nozzle remains relatively consistent due to the same supersonic nozzle inlet flow conditions. However, external to the nozzle, the change in external flow pressure results in the nozzle exit transitioning from over-expanded to under-expanded,leading to a shear layer behind the nozzle that initially converges towards the nozzle center and then diverges. 展开更多

Oilfields worldwide are increasingly grappling with challenges such as early water breakthrough and high water production, yet direct, targeted solutions remain elusive. In recent years, chemical flooding techniques designed for tertiary oil recovery have garnered significant attention, with microgel flooding emerging as a particularly prominent area of research.Despite its promise, the complex mechanisms underlying microgel flooding have been rarely investigated numerically. This study aims to address these gaps by characterizing the distribution of microgel concentration and viscosity within different pore structures. To enhance the accuracy of these characterizations, the viscosity of microgels is adjusted to account for the shear effects induced by flow rate and the swelling effects driven by salinity variations. The absolute permeability of the rock and the relative permeability of both oil and microgel are also analyzed to elucidate the mechanisms of microgel flooding.Additionally,a connectivity model is employed to achieve a quantitative representation of fluid flow capacity. The proposed model is validated through conceptual examples and applied to real oilfield blocks, demonstrating its accuracy and practical applicability. 展开更多

The multi-scale modeling combined with the cohesive zone model(CZM)and the molecular dynamics(MD)method were preformed to simulate the crack propagation in NiTi shape memory alloys(SMAs).The metallographic microscope and image processing technology were employed to achieve a quantitative grain size distribution of NiTi alloys so as to provide experimental data for molecular dynamics modeling at the atomic scale.Considering the size effect of molecular dynamics model on material properties,a reasonable modeling size was provided by taking into account three characteristic dimensions from the perspective of macro, meso, and micro scales according to the Buckinghamπtheorem. Then, the corresponding MD simulation on deformation and fracture behavior was investigated to derive a parameterized traction-separation(T-S)law,and then it was embedded into cohesive elements of finite element software. Thus, the crack propagation behavior in NiTi alloys was reproduced by the finite element method(FEM).The experimental results show that the predicted initiation fracture toughness is in good agreement with experimental data.In addition,it is found that the dynamics initiation fracture toughness increases with decreasing grain size and increasing loading velocity. 展开更多

Swells are critical concerns regarding safety, marine transportation, and coastal engineering construction of coastal countries along the Gulf of Guinea and have been scientific problems due to the lack of systematic theoretical, numerical, and observational research. In this study,a double nesting numerical model was constructed and validated from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Guinea based on simulating waves nearshore(SWAN)to explore the swell characteristics and source tracing in the Gulf of Guinea in winter and summer seasons from 2020 to 2021.Simulation results reveal that swells are stronger and deflect more to the west in winter than summer, even though they dominate in both seasons in the Gulf of Guinea in the S-SW directional range.Simulated two-dimensional(2D)wave spectral patterns not only clarify wave composition, variation, and propagation properties from the central South Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Guinea, but also distinguish swell strength and directional range in winter and summer. The NW wind events induce swells which spread toward the SSE-ESE direction from the North Atlantic Ocean, big wind source generates sustained and stable S-SW swells from the South Atlantic Ocean, and corresponding swell-influenced areas are discussed. The strongest swell event in the Gulf of Guinea during the simulation was used as a case study to trace its source.A strong clockwise wind vortex within the Roaring Forties induced these large swells in the Gulf of Guinea approximately 5.5 days later, and swell propagation formed a regular isoline of peak period distribution from the South Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Guinea in the SSW-SW direction. 展开更多

The optimization of flow control devices(FCDs) for a T-type five-strand billet caster tundish was carried out by water modeling and numerical simulation. In water modeling experiments, flow characteristics of the bare tundish and tundish conf igurations with designed U-type baff les and a round turbulence inhibitor were analyzed using residence time distribution(RTD) curves. Mathematical models for liquid steel in the real plant tundish were established using the fluid dynamics software package Fluent. The flow field, the temperature field, and the RTD curves of liquid steel in the proposed tundish conf igurations were obtained. The results of numerical simulation and water modeling were validated with each other by the predicted and experimental RTD curves. The results of flow field and temperature field were used to ref lect the actual state of a real plant tundish and to choose the optimal FCD. Finaly, from the whole performance of the multi-strand tundish, the optimal scheme was determined by combining the results of water modeling and numerical simulation. With the optimal tundish equipped with U-type baffle with def lector holes and round turbulence inhibitor, not only was the flow characteristic of each strand improved, but also the difference of flow characteristics between multiple strands was smaller. 展开更多

Estimation of the rock mass modulus of deformation(Em)is one of the most important design parameters in designing many structures in and on rock. This parameter can be obtained by in situ tests, empirical relations between deformation modulus and rock mass classifcation, and estimating from laboratory tests results. In this paper,a back analysis calculation is performed to present an equation for estimation of the rock mass modulus of deformation using genetic programming(GP)and numerical modeling.A database of 40,960 datasets, including vertical stress(rz),horizontal to vertical stresses ratio(k),Poisson’s ratio(m),radius of circular tunnel(r)and wall displacement of circular tunnel on the horizontal diameter(d)for input parameters and modulus of deformation for output, was established. The selected parameters are easy to determine and rock mass modulus of deformation can be obtained from instrumentation data of any size circular galleries. The resulting RMSE of 0.86 and correlation coeffcient of97%of the proposed equation demonstrated the capability of the computer program(CP)generated by GP. 展开更多

Modeling and simulation have emerged as an indispensable approach to create numerical experiment platforms and study engineering systems. However, the increasingly complicated systems that engineers face today dramatically challenge state-of-the-art modeling and simulation approaches.Such complicated systems, which are composed of not only continuous states but also discrete events, and which contain complex dynamics across multiple timescales, are defined as generalized hybrid systems(GHSs)in this paper. As a representative GHS,megawatt power electronics(MPE)systems have been largely integrated into the modern power grid, but MPE simulation remains a bottleneck due to its unacceptable time cost and poor convergence. To address this challenge, this paper proposes the numerical convex lens approach to achieve state-discretized modeling and simulation of GHSs.This approach transforms conventional time-discretized passive simulations designed for pure-continuous systems into state-discretized selective simulations designed for GHSs.When this approach was applied to a largescale MPE-based renewable energy system,a 1000-fold increase in simulation speed was achieved,in comparison with existing software.Furthermore, the proposed approach uniquely enables the switching transient simulation of a largescale megawatt system with high accuracy, compared with experimental results, and with no convergence concerns. The numerical convex lens approach leads to the highly efficient simulation of intricate GHSs across multiple timescales, and thus significantly extends engineers’capability to study systems with numerical experiments. 展开更多

The Jiangsu coastal area is located in central-eastern China and is well known for complicated dynamics with large-scale radial sand ridge systems. It is therefore a challenge to simulate typhoon-induced storm surges in this area. In this study, a two-dimensional astronomical tide and storm surge coupling model was established to simulate three typical types of typhoons in the area. The Holland parameter model was used to simulate the wind field and wind pressure of the typhoon and the Japanese 55-year reanalysis data were added as the background wind field. The offshore boundary information was provided by an improved Northwest Pacific Ocean Tide Model. Typhoon-induced storm surges along the Jiangsu coast were calculated based on analysis of wind data from 1949 to 2013 and the spatial distribution of the maximum storm surge levels with different types of typhoons, providing references for the design of sea dikes and planning for control of coastal disasters. 展开更多

By means of the computational fluid dynamics software Fluent 6.3, a mathematical model of three-dimensional three-phase fluid flow field in the molten bath of electric arc furnace (EAF) with side accessorial oxygen lances was developed to study the transient phenomena of oxygen jet impingement on the molten steel and the molten slag. The water modeling experiment was carried out to verify the simulation results. The impingement of the supersonic oxygen jet caused impact dent on the molten steel surface accordingly. The area of impact dent changed almost in linear relationship to flow rate of oxygen jet, which can be expressed by a deduced mathematical equation. And the relationship between the impact force of oxygen iet and the correspondingly formed apparent static pressure on molten bath was obtained, which was in linear relationship and a direct proportion, and can also be expressed by a deduced mathematical equation. 展开更多

The surface radiation heat simulation program based on Microsoft VC++ 6.0 for spacecraft in whole orbit course was presented.Due to complexity of spacecraft structure, the spacecraft structures were decomposed to relatively regular parts.Automatic generation of calculation grid was conducted by using structured grid and unstructured technology.Simulation mainly solved automatic grid generation for arbitrary surface and data transmission between arbitrary shape interfaces, and the geometry structure, physical process, calculation accuracy and efficiency were considered.View factors and radiation transfer coefficients were calculated by combining finite element method and ray uniform distribution.According to the position of surface cells, external heat flux was calculated with integral method for non-shaded surface and with ray uniform distribution method for shaded surface. As the spacecraft surface was wrapped with multilayer insulation material, the temperature field of multilayer insulation material was calculated with nodal network method and finite volume method. The temperature of other parts without wrap was calculated with finite element method. The temperature of unconnected regions available with radiation heat transfer relations was analyzed, and the calculation formulae were deduced.Numerical experiment shows that the simulation program is correct and effective. 展开更多

In the process of numerical control machining simulation, the workpiece surface is usually described with the uniform triangular mesh model. To alleviate the contradiction between the simulation speed and accuracy in this model, two improved methods,i.e.,the local refinement triangular mesh modeling method and the adaptive triangular mesh modeling method were presented. The simulation results show that when the final shape of the workpiece is known and its mathematic representation is simple, the local refinement triangular mesh modeling method is preferred;when the final shape of the workpiece is unknown and its mathematic description is complicated, the adaptive triangular mesh modeling method is more suitable. The experimental results show that both methods are more targeted and practical and can meet the requirements of real-time and precision in simulation. 展开更多

Usually a buffer layer of cadmium sulphide is used in high efficiency solar cells based on Cu(In,Ga)Se2(CIGS). Because of cadmium toxicity, many in-vestigations have been conducted to use Cd-free buffer layers. Our work focuses on this type of CIGS-based solar cells where CdS is replaced by a ZnS buffer layer. In this contribution, AFORS-HET software is used to simulate n-ZnO: Al/i-ZnO/n-ZnS/p-CIGS/Mo polycrystalline thin-film solar cell where the key parts are p-CIGS absorber layer and n-ZnS buffer layer. The characteristics of these key parts: thickness and Ga-content of the absorber layer, thickness of the buffer layer and doping concentrations of absorber and buffer layers have been investigated to optimize the conversion efficiency. We find a maximum conversion efficiency of 26% with a short-circuit current of 36.9 mA/cm2, an open circuit voltage of 824 mV, and a fill factor of 85.5%. 展开更多

The constitutive relation of powder material was derived based on the assumption that metal powder is a kind of elasto-plastic material, complying with an elliptical yield criterion. The constitutive integration algorithm was discussed. A way to solve the elastic strain increment in each iteration step during elasto-plastic transition stage was formulated. Different integration method was used for elastic and plastic strain. The relationship between model parameters and relative density was determined through experiments. The model was implemented into user-subroutines of Marc. With the code, computer simulations for compaction process of a balancer were performed. The part is not axisymmetric and requires two lower punches and one upper punch to form. The relative density distributions of two design cases, in which different initial positions of the punches were set, were obtained and compared. The simulation results indicate the influence of punch position and movement on the density distribution of the green compacts. 展开更多
