Simulation and Performance Analysis of a Photovoltaic-Thermal Heat Pump System

The growing demand for energy-saving and renewable heating solutions has made photovoltaic/thermal(PV/T)heat pump systems a promising technology.However,their thermal and electrical performance,as well as the overall utilization of solar energy,strongly depend on capacity configuration and operating parameters.To address this issue,this study proposes a PV/T heat pump system featuring a novel rhombic flow channel structure that functions as the collector-evaporator.An experimental test bench was established to evaluate system performance,and a one-dimensional numerical model was developed to investigate the effects of environmental and operating parameters.The simulation results deviated by approximately 10%from the experimental data,indicating good agreement between the two approaches.Analysis shows that hot-water heating time decreases with increasing solar radiation intensity.The system coefficient of performance(COP)rises by 50.9%and 45.9%with higher environmental temperature and collector area,respectively,but decreases by 6.61%and 45%with greater superheat and higher original tank temperature.The photovoltaic(PV)generation efficiency decreases by 6.25%,2.16%,and 1.63%with increases in environmental temperature,collector-evaporator area,and original tank temperature,respectively,but increases by 0.92%with higher superheat.Sensitivity analysis further reveals that original tank temperature exerts the strongest influence on system COP,with a sensitivity coefficient of 1.159,while environmental temperature most significantly affects PV efficiency,with a sensitivity coefficient of−0.051.Overall,this study provides a pathway to enhance system stability and energy efficiency,offering theoretical and practical contributions to the intelligent control of PV/T heat pump systems. 展开更多

In order to investigate the alternate operation characteristics of a solar-ground source heat pump system(SGSHPS),various alternate operation modes are put forward and defined.A two-dimensional mathematical model with freezing/melting phase changes is developed for the heat transfer analysis of the soil.Based on the numerical solution of the model,the variation trends of underground soil temperature of the SGSHPS operated in various alternate operation modes are discussed.The results indicate that,for the day-night and short-time interval alternate operation modes without solar energy,the operation time fraction of a solar heat source should be confined to from 50% to 58% when operated in an alternate period of 24 h.Meanwhile,the disadvantages of a natural resumption of soil temperature can be overcome effectively by solar energy filling,and an optimal operation effect can be achieved by integrating the mode of solar energy filling with other alternate modes.In addition,the accuracy of the presented model is verified by the experimental data of borehole wall temperatures.The conclusions can provide a reference for the optimization operation of the SGSHPS. 展开更多

Aiming to resolve the problem that conventional sewage source heat pump systems cannot satisfy heat peak loads of buildings,a new idea that the freezing latent heat is exacted as the auxiliary heat source at the peak heat load is proposed.First,on the basis of sewage characteristics,a freezing latent heat exchanger is developed to safely eliminate ice,continuously extract heat and remove sewage soft-dirt.A reasonable form of the urban sewage source heat pump system with freezing latent heat collection is presented.Then,the feasibility of the system is theoretically analyzed.The calculation results under typical operating conditions show that the heating ability of the new system is higher than that of the conventional one and the ratio of these two highest heating rates is between 4.5 and 8.7,which proves that the new system has great application potential in cold regions. 展开更多

A new ground source heat pump system combined with radiant heating/cooling is proposed, and the principles and the advantages of the system are analyzed. A demonstration of the system is applied to a rebuilt building: Xijindu exhibition hall, which is located in Zhenjiang city in China. Numerical studies on the thermal comfort and energy consumption of the system are carded out by using TRNSYS software. The results indicate that the system with the radiant floor method or the radiant ceiling method shows good thermal comfort without mechanical ventilation in winter. However, the system with either of the methods should add mechanical ventilation to ensure good comfort in summer. At the same level of thermal comfort, it can also be found that the annual energy consumption of the radiant ceiling system is less than that of the radiant floor system. 展开更多

Its operating performance in winter is evaluated based on test data and a comparative discussion is given on the effect of climate conditions and heating load ratio on the operation behavior. Then heating capacity variation caused by evaporator frosting is analyzed as well. Finally, the defrosting parameters and the technical feasibility are studied for a constant heating demand. The experimental results indicate that both the outlet water temperature drop and the system COP should be taken into account when setting defrosting parameters, and ASHPS is a viable technology for space heating and hot-water production in winter in Tianjin, which can maintain the room temperature above 19 ℃ when the outdoor temperature is -2 ℃. 展开更多

Two new binary near-azeotropic mixtures named M1 and M2 were developed as the refrigerants of the high-temperature heat pump(HTHP).The experimental research was used to analyze and compare the performance of M1 and M2-based in the HTHP in different running conditions.The results demonstrated the feasibility and reliability of M1 and M2 as new high-temperature refrigerants.Additionally,the exploration and analyses of the support vector machine(SVM)and back propagation(BP)neural network models were made to find a practical way to predict the performance of HTHP system.The results showed that SVM-Linear,SVM-RBF and BP models shared the similar ability to predict the heat capacity and power input with high accuracy.SVM-RBF demonstrated better stability for coefficient of performance prediction.Finally,the proposed SVM model was used to assess the potential of the M1 and M2.The results indicated that the HTHP system using M1 could produce heat at the temperature of 130°C with good performance. 展开更多

Based on the Chinese National Standards involving heat pump water heater and space heating system, performances of the R744/R290 subcritical heat pump system have been discussed and compared with those of the R22 system, which is widely used in heat pump systems in China nowadays. It can be indicated that R744/R290 mixture can work efficiently as a refrigerant for heat pumps with a large heat-sink temperature rise. When mass fraction of R290 is increased, discharge pressure is reduced. Under the nominal working condition, there is an optimum mixture mass fraction of 20/80 for R744/R290 under conventional condensation pressure. Both the heating COPhs (coefficient of performance) and volumetric heating capacity are increased by about 12.62% and 34.24% respectively compared with those of R22 based system. But for the heat sink with a small temperature rise, R744/R290 system has poorer performances than R22 system. When heat transfer pinch point in evaporator and condensation processes is considered, the degree of superheat has a negative influence upon system performances under the given conditions. 展开更多

Aiming to give some advices on the ground coupled heat pump system design in Siehuan Province, China, a typical ground source heat pump (GSHP) system in Sichuan Province was tested in a whole operational year, and the parameters of temperature and flow rate in different parts of system were measured during this period. The seasonal energy efficiency ratio was calculated and the performance of heat pump system in summer was compared with that in winter. The result shows that the coefficient of performance of the system reaches 3.63 in summer and 3.49 in winter, respectively. The heat balance in underground rock mass is acquired basically throughout the year, and the heat accumulation in the earth tends to be zero. 展开更多

Based on the data monitoring applied in the school building, this work is focused on the parameters acquisition and operation analysis of the GSHP system in Tangshan. Results show the average COPs(coefficient of performance) are2.85 and 2.70 in summer and winter, respectively, and heat(cold) unbalance underground existed after whole year operation. The analysis of data also indicates that the direct borehole air-conditioning saved some power consumption obviously in the early stage of summer and energy saving of the GSHP system depended remarkably on its operation and management level. Besides the observation points of ground temperature are laid for a large-scale GSHP system, and the hydraulic balance of the pipes group needs to be concerned specially in safeguarding better reliability. 展开更多

Process heating constitutes a significant share of final energy consumption in the industrial sector around the world.In this paper,a high-temperature heat pump(HTHP)using flash tank vapor injection technology(FTVI)is proposed to develop low-temperature geothermal source for industrial process heating with temperature above 100°C.With heat sink output temperatures between 120°C and 150°C,the thermo-economic performance of the FTVI HTHP system using R1234ze(Z)as refrigerant is analyzed and also compared to the single-stage vapor compression(SSVC)system by employing the developed mathematical model.The coefficient of performance(COP),exergy efficiency(ηexe),net present value(NPV)and payback period(PBP)are used as performance indicators.The results show that under the typical working conditions,the COP andηexe of FTVI HTHP system are 3.00 and 59.66%,respectively,and the corresponding NPV and PBP reach 8.13×106 CNY and 4.13 years,respectively.Under the high-temperature heating conditions,the thermo-economic performance of the FTVI HTHP system is significantly better than that of the SSVC system,and the larger the temperature lift,the greater the thermo-economic advantage of the FTVI HTHP system.Additionally,the FTVI HTHP system is more capable than the SSVC system in absorbing the financial risks associated with changes of electricity price and natural gas price. 展开更多

This paper is based on long term parameter measurements of the exhaust air heat pumps (EAHP) system in a new built apartment building. The building was equipped with an exhaust air ventilation system and exhaust air heat pump for ventilation heat recover. The results of the measurements show that the COP of the EAHP is mainly related to the temperature graph of the heating system and the supply temperature of domestic hot water (DWH). During the measurement period some other impact factors, such as the quality of maintenance, the nighttime temperature graph of the heating system, the reduction of the exhaust air flows in case of low temperatures, mistakes in designing and low building quality, have also played a role. An analysis of energy consumption shows that in winter conditions the COP is about 3.0 and in the transition period about 3.3. The energy recovery value of the EAHP is 0.5. 展开更多

To better remove the contamination on the surface of a heat-exchanger in urban sewage source heat pump system (USSHPS), this paper analyzes the feasibility of strong self-flushing on the basis of experiments and presents a new on-line self-flushing technique, which alternately flushes part of heat transfer tubes. In addition, operation principles and the structure of the new heat-exchanger are introduced and the feasible economi- cal and technological cleaning plans are given by design calculation and scheme comparison. The result shows that keeping each tube washed for one minute with 5 m/s, the operating cost is lower than ¥5 and when one flushing pump ahemately flushes 10-20 heat exchangers, the saved costs of flushing 10 tubes alternately are over 4 times of the increased costs. 展开更多

An analytical model was built to predict the thermal resistance of a vertical double U-tube ground-coupled heat pump that operates under steady-state conditions.It included a geometry obstruction factor for heat transfer throughout the backfill medium due to the presence of the second loop.The verification of the model was achieved by the implementation of five different borehole configurations and a comparison with other correlations in the available literature.The model considered a U-tube spacing range between(2)and(4)times the U-tube outside diameter producing a geometry configuration factor range of(0.29-0.6).The results of the model were utilized for the assessment of the DX ground heat exchanger coupled heat pump system.For similar geometrical configurations,the borehole thermal resistance experienced a decrease as the geometry factor increased.The single U-tube borehole thermal resistance was higher than that of the double U-tube heat exchanger by(10-27)%for the examined geometry configurations.The borehole thermal resistance at tube spacing of twice the tube diameter was higher than the predicted value at the triple diameter and fell in the range of(18-34)%. 展开更多

With the limited production and use of R245fa,environmentally friendly refrigerant has attracted the attention of researchers.Due to the similar thermal characteristics,R1233zd(E)is considered to be an ideal substitute for R245fa in heat pump systems.In this study,the performance and economic analysis of heat pump systems with R245fa and R1233zd(E)as refrigerants are carried out.The results show that the total cost of R1233zd(E)system is more than 10%higher than that of R245fa system under the same heating load.With the increase of condensation temperature,the heating capacity of both systems decreases,and with the increase of evaporation temperature,the heating capacity increases.The variation trend of coefficient of performance(COP)of the two systems is similar to that of heating capacity.Under the same operating conditions,the COP of R1233zd(E)system is 19.2%higher than that of R245fa system,and the volumetric heat capacity of R1233zd(E)is 9.0%–13.9%lower than that of R245fa.The economic analysis results show that the investment cost of R1233zd(E)system is low under the same heat load. 展开更多

In this project, different combinations of solar energy and heat pump systems for preparation of DHW (domestic hot water) and space heating of buildings are analyzed through dynamic system simulations in TRNSYS (Transient System Simulation Program). In such systems, solar thermal energy can be used, on one hand, directly to charge the buffer storage and, on the other hand, as heat source for the evaporator oftbe HP (heat pump). In this work systems, in which solar heat is only used directly (parallel operation of solar and HP), systems using the collectors also as a heat source for the HP are analyzed and compared to conventional air HP systems. With a combined parallel solar thermal HP system, the system performance compared to a conventional HP system can be significantly increased. Unglazed selectively coated collectors as source for the HP have the advantage that the collector can be used as an air heat exchanger. If solar radiation is available and the collector is used as source for the HP, higher temperatures at the evaporator of the HP can be achieved than with a conventional air HP system. 展开更多

This study introduces a novel artificial heating technique aimed at addressing frost heave issues in embankments on frozen ground,offering a sustainable solution.Initial evaluations assessed various heating systems,including boilers,heat pumps,solar heaters,and electric heaters,focusing on their thermal performance and applicability.The study subsequently designed and implemented a direct-expansion ground source heat pump(DX-GSHP)system as the primary heat source for embankment warming.Rigorous testing confirmed the DX-GSHP system's ability to maintain a heat-supply temperature above 40℃ and a heat-absorption temperature below -3.5℃,effectively extracting geothermal energy for transfer to the topsoil layers.With a demonstrated coefficient of performance(COP)of 3.49,the DX-GSHP system not only proves its energy efficiency but also suggests a potential role in reducing the strain on electricity supply systems.Installation of DX-GSHPs,with heating capacities ranging from 1.0 to 2.0 kW and spaced at intervals of 2.0-4.0 m,provides a rapid thermal response to frost heave in singletrack railway embankments,thereby potentially mitigating frost-induced damage in cold climate regions. 展开更多

Ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems that use a direct expansion method?are expected to have higher energy-saving performance than conventional air conditioning systems. The heat transfer rate is evaluated by measuring the temperature, humidity, and flow rate at the indoor unit of the GSHP system. However, it is difficult to evaluate the flow rate by measuring the flow velocity distribution at the outlet of the indoor unit. In this study, the Scanning PIV method is proposed to improve the accuracy of the flow rate measured by hot wire anemometers. The flow rates obtained by the hot wire anemometers were 60.6% and 15.2% higher than those from the PIV method during cooling and heating operation, respectively. Compensation formulas are generated using the results of the Scanning PIV method to correct the measurements from the hot wire anemometers. This compensation formula reduced the error generated by the nonuniformity of velocity distribution. It was 60.6% to 2.5% in cooling operation and 15.2% to 0.9% in heating operation, respectively. The compensation formulas were applied to evaluate the performance of a GSHP system, and the result shows that the GSHP system provides improved performance stability compared to traditional air conditioning systems. 展开更多

According to the elements of hydrogeological conditions,lithology,stratigraphic thermal physical parameters,construction technology and economic rational elements,the evaluation system of ground source heat pump( GSHP) were established in Baotou plain. The factor weights were determined by using analytic hierarchy process,and the comprehensive element method was selected to evaluate the region suitability of GSHP system. The results show that the suitable area is 559. 63 km2 for utilizing GSHP in the studied area,accounting for 62. 58% of the total area; while the unsuitable area is 334. 60 km2,accounting for37.42%. The evaluating results can provide not only a scientific basis for development and utilization rationally of shallow geothermal heat in Baotou,but also offer an important reference to the other areas. 展开更多

This paper describes two case studies: 1) a cogeneration system of a hospital and 2) a heat pump system installed in an aquarium that uses seawater for latent heat storage. The cogeneration system is an autonomous system that combines the generation of electrical, heating, and cooling energies in a hospital. Cogeneration systems can provide simultaneous heating and cooling. No technical obstacles were identified for implementing the cogeneration system. The average ratio between electric and thermal loads in the hospital was suitable for the cogeneration system operation. An analysis performed for a non-optimized cogeneration system predicted large potential for energy savings and CO2 reduction. The heat pump system using a low-temperature unutilized heat source is introduced on a heat source load responsive heat pump system, which combines a load variation responsive heat pump utilizing seawater with a latent heat-storage system (ice and water slurry), using nighttime electric power to level the electric power load. The experimental coefficient of performance (COP) of the proposed heat exchanger from the heat pump system, assisted by using seawater as latent heat storage for cooling, is discussed in detail. 展开更多
