The increased interest in geothermal energy is evident,along with the exploitation of traditional hydrothermal systems,in the growing research and projects developing around the reuse of already-drilled oil,gas,and exploration wells.The Republic of Croatia has around 4000 wells,however,due to a long period since most of these wells were drilled and completed,there is uncertainty about how many are available for retrofitting as deep-borehole heat exchangers.Nevertheless,as hydrocarbon production decreases,it is expected that the number of wells available for the revitalization and exploitation of geothermal energy will increase.The revitalization of wells via deep-borehole heat exchangers involves installing a coaxial heat exchanger and circulating the working fluid in a closed system,during which heat is transferred from the surrounding rock medium to the circulating fluid.Since drilled wells are not of uniformdepth and are located in areas with different thermal rock properties and geothermal gradients,an analysis was conducted to determine available thermal energy as a function of well depth,geothermal gradient,and circulating fluid flow rate.Additionally,an economic analysis was performed to determine the benefits of retrofitting existing assets,such as drilled wells,compared to drilling new wells to obtain the same amount of thermal energy. 展开更多

The flow characteristics of shell-side fluid in the tube-and-shell heat exchangers with trisection helical baffles with 35° inclined angles are numerically analyzed. The secondary flow distribution of the fluid in the shell-side channel is focused on. The results on meridian planes indicate that in the shell-side channel, the center part of fluid has an outward tendency because of the centrifugal force, and the peripheral region fluid has an inward tendency under the centripetal force. So in a spiral cycle, the fluid is divided into the upper and lower beams of streamlines, at the same time the Dean vortices are formed near the left baffle, and then the fluid turns to centripetal flow near the right baffle. Finally the two beams of streamlines merge in the main flow. The results of a number of parallel slices between two parallel baffles with the same sector in a swirl cycle also show the existence of the secondary flow and some backward flows at the V-gaps of the adjacent baffles. The secondary flows have a positive effect on mixing fluid by promoting the momentum and mass exchange between fluid particles near the tube wall and in the main stream, and thus they will enhance the heat transfer of the helix heat exchanger. 展开更多

This study presents a simplified numerical approach for evaluating the thermal performance of louvered fin and flat tube heat exchangers(LFFTHXs),which are critical in many thermal management applications but difficult to model due to their complex geometries.The proposed method uses an equivalent convective heat transfer coefficient to represent the fins,significantly reducing the computational requirements of the simulations.Validation against the effectiveness-number of transfer units method showed average deviations of 4.4%for the novel louvered fin with two combined holes and 9.5%for conventional configurations,confirming the accuracy of the method.Further application to two-phase refrigerant scenarios using experimental data demonstrated the robustness of the method and its suitability for practical design and optimization of LFFTHXs.The approach not only improves the feasibility of thermal analysis in industrial applications but also provides a foundation for future research into more efficient heat exchanger designs. 展开更多

The Hypersonic Precooled Combined Cycle Engine(HPCCE), which introduces precooler into traditional hypersonic engine, is regarded as the most promising propulsion system for realizing a single-stage-to-orbit vehicle. The unique demands lead to the application of the compact heat exchangers, which can realize high thrust-to-weight ratio, sufficient specific impulse and high compression ratio. However, it is challenging to accurately manufacture the compact heat exchanger due to its extremely high heat dissipation capacity, remarkable compactness, superior adaptability and harsh operating condition. This review summarizes the precooling schemes of combined cycle propulsions and describes the demands and key issues in the fabrication of a compact heat exchanger for HPCCE. The investigation focuses on the application of various micromanufacturing methods of heat exchangers constructed from tubes of less than 1 mm in diameter and microchannels of less than 200 micrometers. Various micromanufacturing processes, which include microforming, micromachining, stereolithography, chemical etching, 3 D printing, joining and other advanced microfabricating processes, were reviewed. In addition, the technologies are compared in terms of dimensional tolerance, material compatibility, and process applicability. Furthermore, the boundaries of the micromanufacturing constraints are specified as references for the design of compact heat exchangers. Ultimately, the technological difficulties and development trends are discussed for the fabrication of compact heat exchangers for HPCCE. 展开更多

The shell side flow fields of both sextant and trisection helical baffle heat exchangers are presented on meridian and multilayer hexagon slices.It verifies that the performance of sextant schemes is better than those of the other kinds of helical baffle heat exchangers.The main mechanisms are due to the restricted leakage flow in the minimized gaps with increased baffle number and by one row of tubes dampen the leakage flow in the circumferential overlapped area of the adjacent helical baffles.The performance features were simulated on two different angled sextant helical heat exchangers and each compared with two trisection ones of either identical helical pitch or identical incline angle.The results verified that the performances of helical heat exchangers are mainly determined by the helical pitch rather than the baffle incline angle.The average values of comprehensive index hoΔpo-1/3 of the trisection helical schemes T-24.1°and T-29.7°are correspondingly 3.47%and 3.34%lower than those of the sextant ones X-20°and X-25°with identical helical pitches.The comparison results show that the average values of shell side h.t.c.hoand comprehensive index hoΔpo-1/3 of the optimal dual helix sextant scheme DX30°are respectively 7.22%and 23.56%higher than those of the segment scheme S100. 展开更多

After conducting a critical survey of the different categories of existing heat exchangers,the results of several experiments about the behaviour of a two-phase current in an open channel are reported.The results confirm the complexity of the problems induced in heat exchangers by flow maldistribution,especially when two-phase flows are considered in multi-channel systems.It is shown that severe misalignment of heat exchangers can lead to a loss of economic performance of more than 25%.Improper distribution of fluid flow causes longer fluid coils to form,and the liquid cochlea can eventually occupy a large space,thereby reducing heat transfer and disrupting the considered biphasic system.The use of a small diameter distribution pipe with properly spaced outlet holes seems to be a promising approach to fix many of these issues.It is found that the current distribution in the channels,in addition to the header pressure distribution,also depends on factors such as the geometry and the initial flow regime in the header. 展开更多

And this model is asymptotic exponential function. According to the characteristic of sewage heat exchangers, the effective thermal resistance and effective coefficient of heat transmission during the formation of fouling are defined. A model for pressure loss of fouling of asymptotic distribution is presented based on the model of thermal resistance of fouling. And the maximum absolute margin of error of the fouling thermal resistance is smaller than the typical allowable error range. The maximum relative error of the heat transfer coefficient is 12%. These can meet the requirements of engineering. The resuhs of experiments provide a basis for further study and application of swage heat exchangers. 展开更多

Performance analysis of deep borehole heat exchangers for decarbonization of heating systems

Meeting the climate change mitigation targets will require a substantial shift from fossil to clean fuels in the heating sector.Heat pumps with deep borehole exchangers are a promising solution to reduce emissions.Here the thermal behavior of deep borehole exchangers(DBHEs)ranging from 1 to 2 km was analyzed for various heat flow profiles.A strong correlation between thermal energy extraction and power output from DBHEs was found,also influenced by the heating profile employed.Longer operating time over the year typically resulted in higher energy production,while shorter one yielded higher average thermal power output,highlighting the importance of the choice of heating strategy and system design for optimal performance of DBHEs.Short breaks in operation for regenerating the borehole,for example,with waste heat,proved to be favorable for the performance yielding an overall heat output close to the same as with continuous extraction of heat.The results demonstrate the usefulness of deep boreholes for dense urban areas with less available space.As the heat production from a single DBHE in Finnish conditions ranges from half up to even a few GWh a year,the technology is best suitable for larger heat loads. 展开更多

Pinch Analysis is an attractive solution for reduction of thermal energy costs in thermo-chemical industries.In this approach,maximum internally recoverable heat is determined and a heat exchange network is designed to meet the recovery targets.The thermal performance of a heat exchanger over its lifetime is however a concern to industries.Thermal performance of a heat exchanger is affected by many factors which include the physical prop-erties of the shell and tube materials,and the chemical properties of the heat transferfluid.In this study,thermal performance of shell and tube heat exchangers designed to meet heat recovery targets in a Pinch Analysis study is simulated.The aim of this paper is to present predictions of thermal performances of shell and tube heat exchan-gers with different heat transferfluids and geometries as they undergo fouling degradation.Engineering approaches based on thermodynamic analysis,heat balance and Kern Design equations,as well as what-if simu-lation modeling are used in this work.Shell and tube heat exchangers were designed to meet internal heat recov-ery targets for three process plants,A,B and C.These targets were published in a separate paper.The effects of degradation of the tubes-due to incremental growth of fouling resistance-on thermal performance of the exchan-ger were simulated using Visual Basic Analysis(VBA).Overall,it was found that growth in fouling reduces ther-mal efficiency of shell and tube heat exchangers with an exponential relationship.An increase of 100%of fouling resistance leads to an average reduction of 0.37%heat transfer.Higher values of logarithmic mean temperature difference(LMTD)and higher ratios of external diameter to internal diameter of the exchanger tubes amplify the effect of fouling growth on thermal performance of the exchangers.The results of this work can be applied in pinch analysis,during design of heat exchangers to meet the internal heat recovery targets,especially in predicting how fouling growth can affect these targets.This can also be useful in helping operators of shell and tube heat exchangers to determine cleaning intervals of the exchangers to avoid heat transfer loss. 展开更多

This study explores the effectiveness of machine learning models in predicting the air-side performance of microchannel heat exchangers.The data were generated by experimentally validated Computational Fluid Dynam-ics(CFD)simulations of air-to-water microchannel heat exchangers.A distinctive aspect of this research is the comparative analysis of four diverse machine learning algorithms:Artificial Neural Networks(ANN),Support Vector Machines(SVM),Random Forest(RF),and Gaussian Process Regression(GPR).These models are adeptly applied to predict air-side heat transfer performance with high precision,with ANN and GPR exhibiting notably superior accuracy.Additionally,this research further delves into the influence of both geometric and operational parameters—including louvered angle,fin height,fin spacing,air inlet temperature,velocity,and tube temperature—on model performance.Moreover,it innovatively incorporates dimensionless numbers such as aspect ratio,fin height-to-spacing ratio,Reynolds number,Nusselt number,normalized air inlet temperature,temperature difference,and louvered angle into the input variables.This strategic inclusion significantly refines the predictive capabilities of the models by establishing a robust analytical framework supported by the CFD-generated database.The results show the enhanced prediction accuracy achieved by integrating dimensionless numbers,highlighting the effectiveness of data-driven approaches in precisely forecasting heat exchanger performance.This advancement is pivotal for the geometric optimization of heat exchangers,illustrating the considerable potential of integrating sophisticated modeling techniques with traditional engineering metrics. 展开更多

There are several ways to increase the efficiency of energy consumption and to decrease energy consumption. In this paper. the application of pinch technology in analysis of the heat exchangers network (HEN) in order to reduce the energy consumption in a thermal system is studied. Therefore, in this grass root design, the optimum value of △Tmin, is obtained about 10℃and area efficiency (a) is 0.95. The author also depicted the grid diagram and driving force plot for additional analysis. In order to increase the amount of energy saving, heat transfer from above to below the pinch point in the diagnosis stage is verified for all options including re-sequencing, re-piping, add heat exchanger and splitting of the flows. Results show that this network has a low potential of retrofit to decrease the energy consumption, which pinch principles are planned to optimize energy consumption of the unit. Regarding the results of pinch analysis, it is suggested that in order to reduce the energy consumption, no alternative changes in the heat exchangers network of the unit is required. The acquired results show that the constancy of network is completely confirmed by the high area efficiency infirmity of the heat exchanger to pass the pinch point and from of deriving force plot. 展开更多

Ce (Ⅳ) nitrato complexes were adsorbed on two anion exchangers based on polyvinyl pyridine (PVP) and quatemized PVP incorporated into porous silica matrix. The effect of nitric acid concentration (0.5~6 mol·L^-1) and temperature (278 ~318 K) on Ce( Ⅳ ) sorption efficiency was investigated. Sorption increased with increasing nitric acid concentration, indicating that [Ce(NO3)6]^2- complex is the main adsorbed Ce(Ⅳ) species. Oxidation of sorbents by adsorbed Ce ( Ⅳ ) species resulting in Ce ( Ⅲ ) release to the solution was observed. Pyridine based anion exchangers exhibited higher oxidation stability compared to the commercial strong base anion exchanger. Ce( Ⅳ ) reduction was temperature dependent and obeyed pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics. Column separation of Ce ( Ⅳ ) from La ( Ⅲ ) and Y ( Ⅲ ) was carried out from 6 mol·L^-1 nitric acid with PVP based anion exchanger. Reasonable Ce (Ⅳ) breakthrough capacity (0.7 mol·kg^-1 PVP) was achieved. No remarkable decrease of capacity was observed within 3 consequent runs. In contrast, Ce (Ⅲ) leakage due to reduction decreased and breakthrough capacity slightly increased. This effect was more pronounced with increasing temperature. Regeneration with 0.1 mol·L^- 1 nitric acid was successful (recovery 100% ± 4% ) and Ce solution of high purity ( 〉 99.97% ) with respect to La and Y content was gained. 展开更多

T-he number of intermediate condensers and/or intermediate reboilers, the placement locations, the.operating pressure of column, and the heat duties of intermediate heat exchangers are treated as optimization variables. A novel coding procedure making use of an integer number series is proposed to represent and manipulate the structure of system and a stage-to-stage method is used for column design and cost calculation. With the representation procedure, the synthesis problem is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, which can then be solved with an improved simulated annealing algorithm. Abstract Fouling deposits on aluminum heat exchanger reduce the heat transfer efficiency and cause corrosion to the apparatus. This study focuses on the corrosive behavior of aluminum cou- pons covered with a layer of artificial fouling in a humid atmosphere by their weight loss, Tafel plots, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations. The results reveal that chloride is one of the major elements found in the fouling which damages the passive film and initiates corrosion. The galvanic corrosion between the metal and the adjacent carbon particles accelerates the corrosive process. Furthermore, the black carbon favors the moisture uptake, and gives the dissolved oxygen greater chance to migrate through the fouling layer and form a continuous diffusive path. The corrosion rate decreasing over time is conformed to electrochemistry measurements and can be verified by Faraday's law. The non-uniformity of gas–liquid mixture is a critical issue which leads to the heat transfer deterioration of spiralwound heat exchangers(SWHEs).Two-phase mass flow rate and the content of gas are important parameters as well as structural parameters which have prominent influences on flow distribution uniformity of SWHE shell side.In order to investigate the influences of these parameters,an experimental test system was built using water and air as mediums and a novel distributor named"tubes distributor"was designed.The effects of mass flow rate and the content of gas on two-phase distribution performance were analyzed,where the mass flow rate ranged from 28.4 to 171.9 kg·h-1 and the content of gas changed from 0.2 to 0.8,respectively.The results showed that the mixture mass flow rate considerably influenced the liquid distribution than that of gas phase and the larger mass flow rate exhibited the better distribution uniformity of two-phase flow.It was also found that the tubes distributor had the better two-phase uniformity when the content of gas was around 0.4.Tube diameter played an important role in the distribution of gas phase and slit width was more significant for the uniformity of liquid phase. 展开更多

Shape and quantity of helical baffles have great impact on the shell-side performance of helical baffled heat exchangers (HBHE). In this work, three physical models of HBHE with baffles of different shape (trisection, quadrant and sextant sector) were investigated. Numerical simulations were performed on HBHE at three helix an- gles (10°, 25° and 40°) by the software ANSYS CFX. Analyses of numerical results indicate that the sextant HBHE shows relatively better fluid flow performance because the leakage flow in the triangle area is evidently reduced and the fluid streamline appears much closer to an ideal spiral flow, while the trisection and quadrant HBHE show more scattered and disordered streamline distributions. The convective heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop in three types of HBHE were presented. Further investigations on the shell side performance with different helical baf- fles were implemented by the field synergy theory. Both theoretical and numerical analyses gave support on the re- lations between helical baffle shape and shell-side performance. This paper may provide useful reference for the selection of baffle shade and auantitv in HBHE. 展开更多

It is found that the flow maldistribution is serious because of the defects of inlet configurations, while the inlet configuration and Reynolds number are the main factors affecting the flow distribution. The improved inlet configurations, which are the header with a two-stage distributing configuration and the guide vane with a fluid complementary cavity were proposed and tested in this paper. The experimental results show that the improved inlet configurations can effectively improve the performance of flow distribution in heat exchangers. 展开更多
