Current research primarily focuses on emerging organic pollutants,with limited attention to emerging inorganic pollutants (EIPs).However,due to advances in detection technology and the escalating environmental and health challenges posed by pollution,there is a growing interest in treating waters contaminated with EIPs.This paper explores biochar characteristics and modification methods,encompassing physical,chemical,and biological approaches for adsorbing EIPs.It offers a comprehensive review of research advancements in employing biochar for EIPs remediation in water,outlines the adsorption mechanisms of EIPs by biochar,and presents an environmental and economic analysis.It can be concluded that using biochar for the adsorption of EIPs in wastewater exhibits promising potential.Nonetheless,it is noteworthy that certain EIPs like Au(III),Rh(III),Ir(III),Ru(III),Os(III),Sc(III),and Y(III),have not been extensively investigated regarding their adsorption onto biochar.This comprehensive review will catalyze further inquiry into the biochar-based adsorption of EIPs,addressing current research deficiencies and advancing the practical implementation of biochar as a potent substrate for EIP removal from wastewater streams. 展开更多

With the increasing complexity of the current electromagnetic environment,excessive microwave radi-ation not only does harm to human health but also forms various electromagnetic interference to so-phisticated electronic instruments.Therefore,the design and preparation of electromagnetic absorbing composites represent an efficient approach to mitigate the current hazards of electromagnetic radiation.However,traditional electromagnetic absorbers are difficult to satisfy the demands of actual utilization in the face of new challenges,and emerging absorbents have garnered increasing attention due to their structure and performance-based advantages.In this review,several emerging composites of Mxene-based,biochar-based,chiral,and heat-resisting are discussed in detail,including their synthetic strategy,structural superiority and regulation method,and final optimization of electromagnetic absorption ca-pacity.These insights provide a comprehensive reference for the future development of new-generation electromagnetic-wave absorption composites.Moreover,the potential development directions of these emerging absorbers have been proposed as well. 展开更多

Emerging contaminants(ECs)have raised global concern due to their adverse effect on ecosystems and human health.However,the occurrence and transport of ECs in stormwater remain unclear.The impact of ECs from stormwater on surface water quality and ecosystem health is also poorly documented.In this review,we examined the variations in EC concentrations in surface water resulting from stormwater.During the wet weather,the concentrations of most investigated ECs,e.g.,microplastics,per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances,and vehicle-related compounds,significantly increase in surface water,indicating that stormwater may be a critical source of these contaminants.Furthermore,the potential pathways of ECs from stormwater enter surface water are outlined.Studies demonstrate that surface runoff and combined sewer overflows are important pathways for ECs,with discharges comparable to or exceeding those from wastewater treatment plants.Illicit connection also plays an important part in elevated EC concentrations in surface water.Overall,our findings underscore the importance of stormwater as a source for ECs in surface waters,and urge for increased emphasis on,and reinforcement of,stormwater monitoring and control measures to minimize the transport of ECs into receiving water bodies. 展开更多

Inefficient photo-carrier separation and sluggish photoreaction dynamics appreciably undermine the photocatalytic decontamination efficacy of photocatalysts.Herein,an S-scheme Mn_(0.5)Cd_(0.5)S/Bi_(2)MoO_(6)heterojunction with interfacial Mo-S chemical bond is designed as an efficient photocatalyst.In this integrated photosystem,Bi2MoO6 and Mn_(0.5)Cd_(0.5)S function as oxidation and reduction centers of Mn_(0.5)Cd_(0.5)S/Bi_(2)MoO_(6)microspheres,respectively.Importantly,the unique charge transfer mechanism in the chemically bonded S-scheme heterojunction with Mo-S bond as atom-scale charge transport highway effectively inhibits the photocorrosion of Mn_(0.5)Cd_(0.5)S and the recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs,endowing Mn_(0.5)Cd_(0.5)S/Bi_(2)MoO_(6)photocatalyst with excellent photocatalytic decontamination performance and stability.Besides,integration of Mn_(0.5)Cd_(0.5)S nanocrystals into Bi2MoO6 improves hydrophilicity,conducive to the photoreactions.Strikingly,compared with Mn_(0.5)Cd_(0.5)S and Bi2MoO6,the Mn_(0.5)Cd_(0.5)S/Bi_(2)MoO_(6)unveils much augmented photoactivity in tetracycline eradication,among which Mn_(0.5)Cd_(0.5)S/Bi_(2)MoO_(6)-2 possesses the highest activity with the rate constant up to 0.0323 min-1,prominently outperforming other counterparts.This research offers a chemical bonding engineering combining with S-scheme heterojunction strategy for constructing extraordinary photocatalysts for environmental purification. 展开更多

Obesogenic effects of six classes of emerging contaminants

There is growing concern about the concept that exposure to environmental chemicals may be contributing to the obesity epidemic.However,there is no consensus on the obesogenic effects of emerging contaminants from a toxicological and environmental perspective.The potential human exposure and experimental evidence for obesogenic effects of emerging contaminants need to be systematically discussed.The main objective of this review is to provide recommendations for further subsequent policy development following a critical analysis of the literature for humans and experimental animals exposed to emerging contaminants.This article reviews human exposure to emerging contaminants(with a focus on antimicrobials,preservatives,water and oil repellents,flame retardants,antibiotics and bisphenols)and the impact of emerging contaminants on obesity.These emerging contaminants have been widely detected in human biological samples.Epidemiological studies provide evidence linking exposure to emerging contaminants to the risks of obesity in humans.Studies based on animalmodels and adipose cells show the obesogenic effects of emerging contaminants and identify modes of action by which contaminants may induce changes in body fat accumulation and lipid metabolic homeostasis.Some knowledge gaps in this area and future directions for further investigation are discussed. 展开更多

An automated adaptive trading system for enhanced performance of emerging market portfolios

One of the most notable developments in the asset management industry in recent decades has been the growth of algorithmic trading.At the same time,significant structural changes in the industry have occurred,with passive investing gaining momentum.The intersection of these two major trends poses special challenges during market downturns,magnifying portfolio losses and leading to significant outflows.Emerging market(EM)investors have seen two major downturn events in the 2020s,namely the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict,both of which have strongly affected EM portfolios’risk-return profiles and increased their correlations with their developed market counterparts,eliminating much or all of EMs’diversification benefits.This has led to major capital outflows from EM countries,further destabilizing these fragile economies.Against this backdrop,we argue that capital need not exit these riskier markets during periods of turmoil and support this by developing a second-generation Automated Adaptive Trading System(AATS)back-tested on a relevant,diversified EM portfolio that tracks the Morgan Stanley Capital International(MSCI)Emerging Markets Index during a volatile period characterized by negative returns,high risk,and a high correlation with global markets for the buy-and-hold EM portfolio.The system incorporates an Autoregressive Moving Average-Generalized AutoRegressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity model that offers an interpretability advantage over machine-learning methods.The main strength of the AATS is its ability to allow the embedded hybrid forecasting model to adapt to the changing environments that characterize EMs.This is done by implementing a recursive window technique and running a user-specified fitness function to dynamically optimize the mean equation parameters throughout the lead time.Back-testing several configurations of the flexible AATS consistently reveals its superiority while assuring the robustness of the results.We conclude that with the right investment tools,EMs continue to offer compelling opportunities that should not be overlooked.The novel AATS proposed in this study is such a tool,providing active EM investors with substantial value-added through its ability to generate abnormal returns,and can help to enhance the resilience of EMs by mitigating the cost of crises for those countries. 展开更多

This study explores correlations and risk spillovers,essential concepts for financial risk management,among commodities(crude oil,gold,and a global commodities index)and emerging stock markets.Using the Asymmetric Dynamic Conditional Correlation–Conditional Value-at-Risk(ADCC-CoVaR)model and a bootstrapped Kolmogorov–Smirnov(KS)test,we analyze the period from December 30,2005,to February 28,2024,examining correlations,downside and upside risk spillovers,and highlighting the effects of major events such as the global financial crisis of 2008,the COVID-19 pandemic,and the Russia-Ukraine war.The results show heightened correlations during crises and significant risk spillovers across market pairs,with downside risks often outweighing upside risks.Gold displays minimal risk spillover,highlighting its unique role as a haven asset.We find that spillovers between gold,global commodities,and stocks increased during the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict,while those involving crude oil remained stable.These findings provide valuable guidance for portfolio managers in navigating volatile markets. 展开更多

We highlight the crucial role of controllable synthesis and heterogeneous effect intailoring perovskite properties to boost application efficacy. Initially, this review examines the primary synthesismethods and mechanisms for creating heterogeneously induced one-dimensional anisotropic perovskites, cate-gorizingthem into two main approaches: the classical wet chemical synthesis, which utilizes selective ligands, andthe ligand-free, substrate-assisted method. The precision in controllable synthesis is essential for fabricatingheterogeneous structures, where the synthesized precursor, shape, and surface ligand significantly influence theinterfacial strength of the heterogenic interface. We also discuss the key features that must be improved for high-performanceapplications, exploring how heterogeneous effects can enhance performance and drive the devel-opmentof heterogeneous devices in various applications, such as photodetectors, solar cells, light-emitting di-odes,and photocatalysis. Globalization has resulted in a notable rise in the flow of high-skilled talent from emerging countries to developed nations. Current research on transnational talent flow mainly focuses on the destination countries, with less attention given to the perspective of the sending countries, particularly lacking a dynamic discussion on its impact on technological evolution in the origin countries. Based on the OECD REGPAT database, this paper aims to explore how talent groups migrating to developed countries facilitate the return of knowledge and technology to emerging countries and achieve breakthroughs in their technological evolution paths, while further discussing the potential mechanisms involved. The findings of this paper are as follows:(1) The technological development of emerging countries is a path-dependent process, where countries often branch into new technologies related to their preexisting knowledge base. Consequently, knowledge feedback from high-skilled talents increases the likelihood of sending countries developing unrelated technologies.(2) The mobility of talents across borders fosters more international collaborations and citations for patents that are unrelated to the local knowledge base, thus enriching the technological paths of sending countries.(3) The mobility of high-skilled talents primarily affects complex technologies, which have significant economic effects that encourage imitation by other countries.However, the effect on novel technologies is less significant due to their strong geographical stickiness. In general, this paper addresses the gaps in existing research on talent outflow and the technological evolution of origin countries, providing empirical evidence for the positive role of transnational talent mobility in the technological catch-up of emerging nations.Besides, it offers recommendations for talent export, import, and innovation policy formulation in these countries. 展开更多

Gestational diabetes mellitus(GDM)is a metabolic condition caused by chronic insulin resistance during pregnancy,affecting millions of women globally and causing significant health concerns.Its consequences are far-reaching,associated with poor feto-maternal outcomes.GDM has serious implications on metabolic health in both mother and child.Early diagnosis and management of GDM are crucial to prevent related consequences.Traditional diagnostic and predictive biomarkers for GDM,including oral glucose tolerance test,adiponectin,resistin,etc.,have limitations.Recent advances in research have identified novel biomarkers for GDM,offering promising alternatives for early diagnosis and prediction to prevent the associated adverse pediatric outcomes.Emerging biomarkers include microRNAs,cell-free DNA,exosomes,glycolytic intermediates,inflammatory biomarkers(C-reactive protein and interleukin-6),metabolic biomarkers(Betatrophin,fetuin-A,etc.),etc.Emerging bidirectional communication pathway(gut microbiota gut-brain-axis)plays a crucial role in GDM pathophysiology,and could be a promising biomarker.Emerging technologies such as next-generation seque-ncing,metabolomics,and proteomics have enabled the discovery of novel bio-markers for GDM and related pediatric outcomes.This review aims to summarize the current state of knowledge on emerging biomarkers for GDM,including their diagnostic accuracy,predictive value,and potential clinical applications to improve feto-maternal outcomes by personalized medicine approaches. 展开更多

Biological contaminants(BCs),including but not limited to various pathogens and their endogenous pol-lutants such as intracellular pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes(ARGs),are ubiquitously detected in effluent of wastewater and drinking water treatment systems which were originally designed to remove common indicator bacteria,resulting in potential impacts on public health.Although there are many emerging technologies that showing promising antimicrobial effects,few have progressed to the actual water scenarios.It’s crucial to understand the main knowledge gaps and thereby design the future developments to better meet engineering requirements.In this review,we first summarize the perfor-mance of conventional water treatment towards BCs removal.Then we showcase the advances of proof-of-concept strategies,including nanotechnology,advanced oxidation process,biological control process and integrated techniques,for BCs control in light of antimicrobial mechanisms,characteristics,proper niches in water treatment,challenges and latest improvements.Further,we proposed a semi-quantitative framework coupling life cycle assessment(LCA)and analytic hierarchy process(AHP)to assess and compare the application potential of representative pilot technologies,in which the antimicro-bial effects,economic issues and sustainability are comprehensively considered.For wastewater treat-ment,non-thermal plasma weights highest among the emerging technologies and outperforms conventional disinfection in terms of efficacy indicators(overall inactivation rate,ARGs removal rate,and growth inhibition),but fall behind overall mainly due to more energy input.Bacteriophage-based treatment has the potential to synergistically inactive the persistent pathogens in combination with con-ventional disinfection,serving as a cost-effective and environmental-friendly supplement.For drinking water treatment,the integrated photocatalytic nanocomposite receives the highest application potential among the emerging technologies and appears to be supplementary or even alternative next-generation disinfectants.This review shares valuable insights to propel the proof-of-concept antimicrobial trials towards industrial procedures. 展开更多

Research on the hysteresis effect of topic related evolution for emerging trends prediction

Purpose:The study examines the synergy and hysteresis in the evolution of funding and its supported literature,depicts their temporal correlation mechanism,which aids in improving trend predictions.Design/methodology/approach:The study uses the LDA model to identify topics in funding texts and supported papers.A cosine similarity algorithm was employed to estimate the nexus between topics and construct the topic evolution time series.Similarly,the hysteresis effect in topic evolution is analyzed based on topic popularity and content,leading to insights into their temporal correlation mechanism.Findings:The study finds that fund and sponsored paper topics exhibit strong collaboration with a noticeable lag in evolution.The fund topics significantly influence sponsored paper topics after a two-year lag.Moreover,the lag effect is inversely proportional to the topic’s similarity.Research limitations:We use the LDA model to determine the hysteresis effect in topic evolution despite its limitations in handling long-tail words and domain-specific vocabulary.Furthermore,the timing of the emergence of the focal topic in funds is undermined,affecting the findings.Practical implications:These findings enhance the accuracy and scientific validity of trend prediction.Estimating and identifying patterns can help technology managers anticipate future research hotspots,supporting informed decision-making and technology management.Originality/value:This study introduces a research framework to quantitatively and visually analyze the hysteresis effect,revealing the correlation and evolutionary patterns between fund research topics and their funded papers. 展开更多
