Communicative language teaching(CLT) has been introduced to the English-as-a-foreign-language(EFL) context in China for four decades.One of the most significant remaining issues is related to whether this approach to grammar teaching is more effective and efficient than traditional ones.Based on an overview of trends in approaches to grammar instruction,discussion on both advantages of teaching grammar communicatively and the challenges posed by the Chinese EFL context are provided.It is proposed that grammar instruction should be integrated into a communicative framework and this would be the optimal approach to grammar teaching on condition that some constraints in the EFL context in China are dealt with carefully.Teaching implications conclude this paper. 展开更多

Since the approach of communicative language teaching has been strongly encouraged to implement into the English classroom in recent years,the use of authentic materials that may be benefit for CLT has also been discussed by a number of researchers in the area of second language teaching.Most of them pointed that utilizing authentic materials in English teaching programs may provide various advantages that do not adhere to the artificial materials,but only few objections had been mentioned.In fact,like the difficulties that take place in the implement of CLT,the use of authentic materials also face to an amount of obstacles,particularly in EFL curriculum.Therefore,following the definition and characteristics of authentic materials,this article aims to discuss those challenges facing the use of authentic materials and also present some possible solutions for utilizing such materials in ELF classroom. 展开更多

Situation analysis and needs analysis are important tasks at the planning stage of curriculum design in most educational contexts, because they provide a basis for setting goals and objectives. Nevertheless, in Chinese EFL contexts, it is not uncommon that goal setting is managed around language outcomes which are prescribed by the teacher or teaching institution, without making reference to learners' needs and the larger context within which instruction takes place. This paper presents a piece of practical work by conducting a situation analysis and needs analysis in a senior high school in South-west China. In providing the rationale as well as the logistics and the outcomes of conducting the situation analysis and needs analysis, the paper attempts to illustrate a practical way to take account of learner factor and situational factors at the curriculum planning stage in Chinese EFL contexts, especially in the underdeveloped area of China. 展开更多
