Various microbial species within the complex ecosystem of the microbiome have been shown to play important roles in dis...Background: The human gut microbiome is an important target for disease treatment and prevention. Various microbial species within the complex ecosystem of the microbiome have been shown to play important roles in disease. Identification of bioactive materials capable of altering the abundances of these species both safely and effectively is a major goal in microbiome research. Many traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) have been reported to affect the composition of the gut microbiome. Here, we summarize studies that have used TCMs to alter the gut microbiome and discuss the response relationship between TCMs and gut microbial species. Methods: We searched the PubMed, Web of Science, and Knowledge Network databases using the terms “traditional Chinese medicine,” “gut microbiome,” and specific system disease names (endocrine, immune, nervous, cardiovascular, and digestive). Studies were excluded if irrelevant or if the experimental procedures were unclear. Results: TCMs have been reported to affect a wide range of gut microbial taxa spanning major phyla, including Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Verrucomicrobiota, Actinobacteria, and Fusobacteria. In all, 54 TCMs including compounds and extracts have been tested in rodents and 30 have been examined in human trials. Almost all studies have reported positive results in regulating the gut microbiome as well as modulating corresponding phenotypes, spanning diseases of the endocrine, immune, nervous, cardiovascular, and digestive systems. Gut species, including Akkermansia, Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Faecalibacterium, and E. coli, were found to be regulated by 19 TCMs. A network was constructed to visualize the interactions between TCMs and these taxa. Conclusion: There exists a complex and close relationship between intestinal microflora and diseases. Sufficient experimental data and studies have proved that the imbalance of intestinal microflora affects health by mediating metabolism, immune regulation, inflammation and signal transduction. Many characteristic alterations of intestinal microflora are positively correlated with diseases, so intestinal microflora has become a potential risk index and treatment target for many diseases. Many TCMs affect the relative abundances of microbial species in the gut, and therefore may be useful for modulating the gut microbiome. This review provides a reference for prioritizing candidate TCMs from the enormous repertoire of such medicines to test which specific gut microbes are targeted.展开更多

AIM:To evaluate the clinical features,diagnosis,treatment,and outcome of peripheral exudative hemorrhagic chorioretinopathy(PEHCR),a variant of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy(PCV),in a case series of Chinese patien...AIM:To evaluate the clinical features,diagnosis,treatment,and outcome of peripheral exudative hemorrhagic chorioretinopathy(PEHCR),a variant of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy(PCV),in a case series of Chinese patients.METHODS:This study was retrospectively conducted from September 2018 to March 2025.Clinical examinations included color fundus photography,B-scan ultrasonography,fluorescein angiography(FA),indocyanine green angiography(ICGA),swept-source optical coherence tomography(SS-OCT),and optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA),and two active or inactive subgroups and misdiagnosed cases were analyzed.RESULTS:Totally 19 patients(21 eyes)with a mean age of 54.3±9.4(range,36–68)y were included,with a majority of women(n=13,68.4%).The mean follow-up period was 13±1.4(range:1–57)mo.Decreased visual acuity was the most frequent initial manifestation(17 eyes,84.2%),and lesions were mainly distributed in the inferotemporal or temporal quadrant(14 eyes,66.7%),with choroidal polyps and branching neovascular networks revealed by OCTA and ICGA.Nine patients had been previously misdiagnosed with choroidal melanoma,and 6 of them had massive vitreous hemorrhage(VH).PEHCR manifested along a spectrum ranging from active or inactive subretinal hemorrhagic forms to chronic fibrotic or atrophic forms.One patient experienced natural regression.Ten eyes received a mean of 4.7±1.1(range:3–7)intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)injections,two eyes underwent vitrectomy,and six eyes were treated with vitrectomy combined with anti-VEGF therapy.Best-corrected visual acuity(logMAR)in treated eyes(18 eyes)improved to 0.31±0.25 from the baseline of 1.50±0.75(P<0.001).CONCLUSION:PEHCR is a variant of PCV.Chinese patients with PEHCR have a relatively younger age of onset.Anti-VEGF injections and/or vitrectomy are treatment options for lesion regression or dense VH to gain better visual outcomes.展开更多

文摘AIM:To evaluate the clinical features,diagnosis,treatment,and outcome of peripheral exudative hemorrhagic chorioretinopathy(PEHCR),a variant of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy(PCV),in a case series of Chinese patients.METHODS:This study was retrospectively conducted from September 2018 to March 2025.Clinical examinations included color fundus photography,B-scan ultrasonography,fluorescein angiography(FA),indocyanine green angiography(ICGA),swept-source optical coherence tomography(SS-OCT),and optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA),and two active or inactive subgroups and misdiagnosed cases were analyzed.RESULTS:Totally 19 patients(21 eyes)with a mean age of 54.3±9.4(range,36–68)y were included,with a majority of women(n=13,68.4%).The mean follow-up period was 13±1.4(range:1–57)mo.Decreased visual acuity was the most frequent initial manifestation(17 eyes,84.2%),and lesions were mainly distributed in the inferotemporal or temporal quadrant(14 eyes,66.7%),with choroidal polyps and branching neovascular networks revealed by OCTA and ICGA.Nine patients had been previously misdiagnosed with choroidal melanoma,and 6 of them had massive vitreous hemorrhage(VH).PEHCR manifested along a spectrum ranging from active or inactive subretinal hemorrhagic forms to chronic fibrotic or atrophic forms.One patient experienced natural regression.Ten eyes received a mean of 4.7±1.1(range:3–7)intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)injections,two eyes underwent vitrectomy,and six eyes were treated with vitrectomy combined with anti-VEGF therapy.Best-corrected visual acuity(logMAR)in treated eyes(18 eyes)improved to 0.31±0.25 from the baseline of 1.50±0.75(P<0.001).CONCLUSION:PEHCR is a variant of PCV.Chinese patients with PEHCR have a relatively younger age of onset.Anti-VEGF injections and/or vitrectomy are treatment options for lesion regression or dense VH to gain better visual outcomes.
文摘Dengue fever is an acute infectious disease caused by the dengue virus and transmitted by mosquito vectors[1].Its clinical manifestations include high fever,headache,muscle and joint pain,and rash.It holds a significant position in global public health.In recent years,its incidence has continued to rise worldwide[2],making it one of the major diseases threatening human health.The disease course of dengue fever is divided into three typical phases:the acute febrile phase,the critical phase,and the recovery phase.While most patients experience mild symptoms,some may progress to severe dengue and potentially fatal outcomes if not promptly and effectively treated during the critical phase.

文摘Vitamin D deficiency(VDD)represents a significant nutritional concern among children and adolescents.The estimated prevalence of VDD in China is 46.8%in this population^([1]).VDD during childhood and adolescence has been associated with the onset of various conditions,including acute respiratory infections,asthma,atopic dermatitis,and food allergies^([2]).Multiple factors,including age,sun exposure,adiposity,and genetics,influence vitamin D levels^([2,3]).Increasing attention has been directed toward understanding the environmental determinants that may influence vitamin D status.Given the potential of metallic pollutants to disrupt endocrine function and their ubiquity in the environment,investigating the effects of metal exposure on human vitamin D status,particularly in vulnerable populations,is imperative.

文摘Salinization of agricultural land is becoming increasingly severe worldwide,posing a significant threat to food security.The exogenous application of bioactive substances has been widely used to enhance plant resistance to salt stress.In this study,we used corn steep liquor(CSL),myo-inositol(MI),and their combination to improve salt tolerance in Chinese cabbage(Brassica rapa L.ssp.pekinensis)under salt stress conditions.All three treatments significantly increased plant biomass and nutrient uptake,and improved soil physicochemical properties,while alleviating oxidative damage and ion toxicity.

文摘This paper explores the historical development and modern transformation of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)to dispel the misconception that it is merely“traditional,ancient,backward and unscientific”.TCM,with roots in ancient times,has evolved into a comprehensive medical system through the integration of empirical knowledge and theoretical frameworks.This review summarizes TCM’s development from three aspects:(1)Ancient Medical Development:From the Spring and Autumn to Han-Tang periods(770 B.C.E.-907 C.E.),the focus was on summarizing experience.A clear disciplinary classification emerged during the Song and Ming Dynasties(960 C.E.-1644 C.E.),and a complete medical system was established in the Qing Dynasty(1636 C.E.-1912 C.E.).(2)Modern Medical Development:Influenced by the European Industrial Revolution,new natural sciences-based technologies enhanced Western medicine’s diagnostic and treatment efficiency.The promotion of Western medicine in China and its metrological concepts,which underpin metrology-based medicine(MBM),in turn propelled the development of TCM.(3)The integration of modern TCM with metrology science has significantly changed TCM’s treatment and pharmaceutical fields.In recent decades,the introduction of western medicine has advanced TCM,creating a combined approach that leverages the advantages of both traditions.Supported by metrology and modern sciences,this integration has provided new tools for TCM quantification,standardization,and quality control.The paper emphasizes key milestones in TCM history,the impact of Western medicine and metrology on its modernization,and the potential of integrated approaches for complex medical challenges.It highlights the importance of preserving traditional knowledge while innovating to enhance TCM’s efficacy and safety.Future prospects suggest that TCM,combined with Metrology-based medicine,may play a crucial role in treating complex diseases,as modern Chinese medicine(MCM)has evolved with scientific advancements and integration of contemporary techniques.
