This paper explores the historical development and modern transformation of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)to dispel the misconception that it is merely“traditional, ancient, backward and unscientific”.TCM,with roots in ancient times, has evolved into a comprehensive medical system through the integration of empirical knowledge and theoretical frameworks. This review summarizes TCM’s development from three aspects:(1)Ancient Medical Development:From the Spring and Autumn to Han-Tang periods(770 B.C.E.-907 C.E.),the focus was on summarizing experience.A clear disciplinary classification emerged during the Song and Ming Dynasties(960 C.E.-1644 C.E.),and a complete medical system was established in the Qing Dynasty(1636 C.E.-1912 C.E.).(2)Modern Medical Development:Influenced by the European Industrial Revolution, new natural sciences-based technologies enhanced Western medicine’s diagnostic and treatment efficiency. The promotion of Western medicine in China and its metrological concepts, which underpin metrology-based medicine(MBM),in turn propelled the development of TCM.(3)The integration of modern TCM with metrology science has significantly changed TCM’s treatment and pharmaceutical fields. In recent decades, the introduction of western medicine has advanced TCM,creating a combined approach that leverages the advantages of both traditions.Supported by metrology and modern sciences, this integration has provided new tools for TCM quantification, standardization, and quality control. The paper emphasizes key milestones in TCM history, the impact of Western medicine and metrology on its modernization, and the potential of integrated approaches for complex medical challenges. It highlights the importance of preserving traditional knowledge while innovating to enhance TCM’s efficacy and safety.Future prospects suggest that TCM,combined with Metrology-based medicine, may play a crucial role in treating complex diseases,as modern Chinese medicine(MCM)has evolved with scientific advancements and integration of contemporary techniques. 展开更多

As a core mechanism for training talents in Chinese medicine,a follow-up study has constructed a unique Chinese medicine education model through the in-depth intermingling of teacher-training mode and clinical practice. In the process of teacher training, the tutor transfers the implicit knowledge such as identification thinking and medication experience in the form of“oral transmission and clinical instruction,”so that the academic postgraduates of Chinese medicine can understand the holistic view of the correspondence between heaven and man,the methodology of identification and treatment, and the internal logic of rationale, methodology, prescription and medicine in the clinical diagnosis and treatment. This kind of transmission not only strengthens the students’basic clinical skills of combining the four diagnoses and analyzing the evidence, but also fosters their academic innovation ability of applying classical theories to solve complex clinical problems through the in-depth analysis of typical medical cases. In this paper,we discuss the significance of teacher-training education in the training of academic postgraduates in Chinese medicine, and propose an optimization path for the reference of higher education in Chinese medicine. 展开更多

Modern western medicine typically focuses on treating specific symptoms or diseases, and traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)emphasizes the interconnections of the body’s various systems under external environment and takes a holistic approach to preventing and treating diseases.Phenomics was initially introduced to the field of TCM in 2008 as a new discipline that studies the laws of integrated and dynamic changes of human clinical phenomes under the scope of the theories and practices of TCM based on phenomics. While TCM Phenomics 1.0 has initially established a clinical phenomic system centered on Zhenghou(a TCM definition of clinical phenome),bottlenecks remain in data standardization, mechanistic interpretation, and precision intervention. Here,we systematically elaborates on the theoretical foundations, technical pathways, and future challenges of integrating digital medicine with TCM phenomics under the framework of“TCM phenomics 2.0”,which is supported by digital medicine technologies such as artificial intelligence, wearable devices, medical digital twins, and multi-omics integration. This framework aims to construct a closed-loop system of“Zhenghou–Phenome–Mechanism–Intervention”and to enable the digitization, standardization, and precision of disease diagnosis and treatment. The integration of digital medicine and TCM phenomics not only promotes the modernization and scientific transformation of TCM theory and practice but also offers new paradigms for precision medicine. In practice, digital tools facilitate multi-source clinical data acquisition and standardization, while AI and big data algorithms help reveal the correlations between clinical Zhenghou phenomes and molecular mechanisms, thereby improving scientific rigor in diagnosis, efficacy evaluation, and personalized intervention.Nevertheless, challenges persist, including data quality and standardization issues, shortage of interdisciplinary talents, and insufficiency of ethical and legal regulations.Future development requires establishing national data-sharing platforms, strengthening international collaboration, fostering interdisciplinary professionals, and improving ethical and legal frameworks.Ultimately, this approach seeks to build a new disease identification and classification system centered on phenomes and to achieve the inheritance, innovation, and modernization of TCM diagnostic and therapeutic patterns. 展开更多
