As a crucial pivot for national strategic development, the university relocation project in Xiong’an New Area undertakes the mission of optimizing capital functions and promoting regional coordinated development.Taking the Xi-ong’an Campus of China University of Geosciences(Beijing)as a case study, this paper explores the collaborative pa-thways between universities and cities in terms of functional complementarity, resource sharing, and ecological symbiosis from the perspective of campus functional layout and spatial optimization.By integrating four core concepts—green ecology, intelligent technology, cultural inheritance, and traffic optimization—it proposes a design strategy of“breaking boundaries and multi-dimensional linkage,”aiming to construct a new spatial paradigm of urban-university integration and provide theoretical support and practical references for the development of higher education and urbanization in Xiong’an New Area. 展开更多

Under the background of cultural regression, the paper emphasized that architectural and environmental characteristic could be a synonym of a college.Chinese college campus environment should abound in Chinese cultural characteristic.Through analysis on traditional academy landscape,it pointed out that construction and structure of academy were deeply influenced by academic culture, and scenery had been taken to express emotions. In terms of site selection,it paid attention to selection of sites near the mountain and by the river,so as to meet the purpose of culture and moral cultivation. In terms of structure, symmetrical layout was mostly adopted.By aid of artificial construction at the inside, academic cultural atmosphere had been enhanced. After analysis of difference between ancient academy and modern campus,it pointed out that traditional academy had natural heritage relation with modern college, and its landscaping concept and scientificness were of value to modern landscaping.Hence,it further studied reference of traditional academic landscape for modern campus landscape construction, highlighting that landscape environment construction should lay stress on diversity, practicability, ecology and culture,so as to achieve heritage and integration of traditional national culture. 展开更多

From 1999, with the rapid expansion of enrollment scale, colleges have experienced fast development and construction of new campuses. However, the urgency of the demand for campus space at that time led to the shortcomings of paying more attention to speed than connotation during the construction of the new campus. Even now the evaluation of new campuses which have been used for nearly twenty years and whether the space of new campuses has played its due role will affect the display of the heritage and temperament of colleges. This paper uses the typical spatial cognitive concept—spatial image to analyse the elements of spatial images on campuses, summarizes the perceptions of teachers and students towards the space of four new campuses in Chengdu through questionnaire survey and analysis, puts forward the principles of campus space design and the strategies of classification design, and intends to take spatial images as the research cut-in point to provide new ideas and suggestions for the design and improvement of campus space from the perspective of users. 展开更多

Bicycling is an important way for college students and employees to get around campuses. With a rise in bicycling on campuses there comes a rise in bicycle collisions with pedestrians walking to and from classes and work. The literature review showed many papers involving bicycle conflict modeling but on roads with motor vehicles. While some aspects of this research can be applied to non-motorized paths, there is a lack of research strictly focusing on only bicycles and pedestrians. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap by developing a model to identify locations on roads and paths (hotspots) on college campuses that are likely to have a bicycle collision and predict the likelihood of a serious bicycle crash on a non-motorized path based on the characteristics of the path. This study identifies those interactions between bicyclists and pedestrians on non-motorized paths on a suburban college campus in Newark, USA. Findings suggest that pedestrian density of a path is a major factor in the maximum speed bicyclists can achieve. The wider the path is, the higher the maximum speed is that a bicyclist can obtain. This is because a wider path width decreases the pedestrian density. The grade of the path has little effect on bicycle speeds. The results of the models were displayed on a GIS map that is visually appealing to a viewer. The paths were color coded based on their level of safety, so it is easy to observe problematic areas of the network. This technique can be applied to the entire campus network of non-motorized paths to study the whole system. This can then be used by planners and designers to identify areas that need upgrading and improve the overall safety of the non-motorized path system. 展开更多

The“Healthy China 2030”initiative has increasingly highlighted the role of university campuses in health promotion. However, many Chinese universities lack awareness of health-supportive environments, resulting in spatial systems that fail to meet the diverse physical and mental health needs of their communities.Among campus environments, outdoor public spaces are pivotal due to their openness and accessibility, making them ideal for fostering the autonomous health behaviors of students. This study investigates the optimization of these spaces to create environments that actively support well-being.Grounded in catalyst and affordance theories,we first identified the spatial preferences of students through questionnaire surveys.Subsequently,we employed the Delphi method and the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP)to construct an evaluation index system for healthy outdoor public spaces. This analysis revealed four core components:functional organization, perceptual environment,health-supportive facilities, and walking trails. For each component,we propose specific design principles and strategies, culminating in a spatial optimization framework aimed at promoting healthy behaviors. This study provides a theoretical foundation and practical guidance for designing health-oriented campus spaces and offers a replicable model for developing supportive university environments. 展开更多

In this study, through case studies of campus architectural heritage, the preservation of architectural heritage on campuses is explored. In addition, the effects of architectural heritage preservation on the identity of campuses are investigated, and the corresponding effects on present-day value and spatial experience are analysed. The case studies involve early campuses planned in East Asia by Henry Murphy, and they feature American designs and building styles. In this study, first, the characteristics of the campuses planned by Henry Murphy are analysed.Next, the characteristics of the preserved architectural heritage at Chosen Christian College are analysed. Finally, with a focus on the preservation of architectural heritage at Shanghai College, the value of architectural heritage and the spatial experience associated with campus development are analysed.Chosen Christian College focused on maintaining the authenticity of buildings, and Shanghai College attempted to consolidate the identity of the campus through maximizing the spatial experience of the architectural heritage group and preserving architectural heritage. Thus,Shanghai College was more influenced by Henry Murphy’s master plan in the development and growth of the campus, and tried to carry on the design concept of the architect and the image of the campus.Conversely,Chosen Christian College was able to retain its original design over nearly a century with the use of all-stone buildings,as Henry Murphy proposed, but no significant trace of the early general plan remains. 展开更多

The students receiving higher education boosted a total increase of 416.45%in China in last 20 years, resulting in newly built campuses reaching over 4.4 billion m^(2).Therefore,implementing low-carbon development on university campuses is an important part of achieving carbon neutrality in China. In this study, the old and new campuses of Southeast University in China were selected and the Rhino Grasshopper tool was used to create and calibrate their energy model with real electricity data to ensure the 20%error range. The calibrated energy model was used to set up four base scenarios under different development paths in year 2030 and 2050,including natural development, campus construction,policy-oriented,and sustainable development. The simulation indicates that campus construction leads to the greatest increase in carbon emissions, with the old campus and new campus experiencing a 16.7%and 162.9%rise,respectively,compared to the current situation. In contrast,policy-oriented scenarios result in the most significant reduction in emissions, decreasing by 121.4%and 114.5%for each scenario, respectively.Only policy-driven approaches will enable both campuses to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.The driving factor decomposition analysis indicates that in no-policy-intervention scenarios, the primary contributors to carbon emissions are short-term climate fluctuations and aging equipment.Conversely,in scenarios with government intervention, the pivotal elements are the implementation of renewable energy and the development of low-carbon technologies. The results of the static scenario combination show that the old campus has a significant lower average carbon emission of 7,080 t than 279,090 t of the new campus in 2050.However,the new campus shows higher potential, with a proportion of 38.3%achieving carbon neutrality in the combination results, compared to 17.2%for the old campus. The study results offer insights into the pathway for universities to achieve carbon neutrality, emphasizing the significance of policy direction and the adoption of renewable energy. 展开更多

Increased exposure to campus green spaces can make a positive contribution to the healthy development of students. However, understanding of the current supply of campus green space(CGS)and its drivers at different education stages is still limited.A new framework was established to evaluate the spatial heterogeneity and its influencing factors across all education stages(kindergarten, primary school, middle school, college)in 1100 schools at the urban scale of Xi’an,China. The research results show that:1)CGS is lower in the Baqiao district and higher in the Yanta and Xincheng districts of Xi’an City.‘Green wealthy schools are mainly concentrated in the Weiyang,Chang’an and Yanta districts.2)CGS of these schools in descending order is college(31.40%)>kindergarten(18.32%)>middle school(13.56%)>primary school(10.70%).3)Colleges have the most recreation sites(n(number)=2),the best education levels(11.93 yr),and the lowest housing prices(1.18×10^(4) yuan(RMB)/m^(2));middle schools have the highest public expenditures(3.97×10^(9) yuan/yr);primary schools have the highest CGS accessibility(travel time gap(TTG)=31.33).4)Multiscale Geographically Weighted Regression model and Spearman’s test prove that recreation sites have a significant positive impact on college green spaces(0.28–0.35),and education level has a significant positive impact on kindergarten green spaces(0.16–0.24).This research framework provides important insights for the assessment of school greening initiatives aimed at fostering healthier learning environments for future generations. 展开更多
