Modification mechanism of caking property of polystyrene waste using low-temperature pyrolysis and its use in coal-blending coking

Polystyrene(PS)waste was depolymerized using a low-temperature pyrolysis treatment(LTPT)to increase its caking index.The mechanism of caking index modification was revealed by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,thermogravimetric(TG)analysis,pyrolysis-gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection,and solid-state^(13)C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.The crucible coal-blending coking tests were carried out using an industrial coal mixture and the treated-PS with the highest caking index(PS300)or raw PS.Some properties of the resultant cokes were also analyzed.It was demonstrated that the caking index of PS dramatically increased by LTPT;however,exceeding 300℃ did not yield any benefit.The caking index increased due to the formation of the caking components,whose molecules are medium in size,caused by LTPT.Additionally,the coke reactivity index of the coke obtained from the mixture containing PS300 decreased by 5.1%relative to that of the coke made from the mixture with PS and the coke strength after reaction index of the former increased by 7.3% compared with that of the latter,suggesting that the ratio of depolymerized PS used for coal-blending coking could increase relative to that of PS. 展开更多

The effects of different kinds of ionic liquids(ILs)on the caking property of Shenhua long-flame coal(SHLC)were studied.SHLC and its residue after[N_(4441)][Cl]treatment under optimum conditions were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR),thermogravimetric analysis(TG),X-ray diffraction(XRD),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),Raman spectroscopy,and pyrolysis-gas chromatography and mass-spectrometric analysis(Py-GC/MS).The results showed that the ILs used could extract the poorly-caking components from SHLC,and[N_(4441)][Cl]with C_(3)H_(6)O as a solvent exhibited the best effect among the ILs and solvents used.[N_(4441)][Cl]could destroy the H bonds in SHLC,and the structure of the cross-linked macromolecules of SHLC was loosed,leading to the release of the small molecules within the macromolecular framework of SHLC.Additionally,[N_(4441)][Cl]could easily penetrate into the interior of the relaxed SHLC and break the weak covalent bonds(e.g.,C-O bonds)of the macromolecules of SHLC.As a result,aromatic hydrocarbons with 3‒5 rings and aliphatic side chains,which are the precursor of the poorly-caking components,were formed and were then extracted from SHLC by C_(3)H_(6)O.Consequently,[N_(4441)][Cl]treatment could decrease the caking property,thermal ability,and macromolecular size of SHLC. 展开更多

Shenmu(SM)subbituminous coal without caking property was treated by low-temperature rapid pyrolysis(LTRP)to modify its caking and coking properties.The treated samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry,vitrinite reflectance,and X-ray diffraction to determine the modification mechanism.Moreover,caking index(G)and coking indices(mechanical strength,coke reactivity,and coke strength after reaction)were employed to evaluate caking and coking properties,respectively.The results showed that SM coal was gradually upgraded with increasing processing temperature.Furthermore,the G values for the treated samples were significantly higher than that for SM coal,and G reached the maximum value at 450℃,implying the modification of caking property and the existence of an optimum temperature(450℃).Additionally,laboratory coking determinations showed that LTRP increased the mechanical strength of coke and coke strength after reaction and decreased coke reactivity when the treated coals were used in the coal blends instead of raw SM coal.Overall,LTRP treatment is effective to improve the caking and coking properties of SM coal.A mechanism was proposed for the modification.Suitable upgrading degree with suitable molecular masses and some releasable hydrogen-rich donor species present within the coal,which dominate the development of caking property,is important. 展开更多

In general, caking processes could be identified as... Caking of products is a common and undesired phenomenon in food, chemical, pharmaceutical, and fertilizer industries which leads to extra cost and irregular quality. In general, caking processes could be identified as amorphous caking or humidity caking. In this review, history of studying caking, formation, methods, and prospects of these two caking processes are summarized and discussed. The relevant studies from the 1920 s to today are mentioned briefly. According to the different properties(i.e. hygrocapacity, hygrosensitivity, mechanical properties, and diffusion behavior) of amorphous powders and crystals, the conditions and mechanisms of amorphous and humidity caking are discussed. It is summarized that glass transition, moisture sorption, quantitative methods characterizing caking, accelerated caking tests, and simulation of caking behaviors are the main aspects that should be studied for a caking process. The methods for these five aspects are reviewed. Potential research points are proposed including caking of mixed particles, caking with phase transition or polymorph transition,non-homogenous caking, and simulation of caking. 展开更多

Under high-temperature batch fluidized bed conditions and by employing juye coal as the raw material,the present study determined the effects of the bed material,temperature,OC/C ratio,steam flow and oxygen carrier cycle on the chemical looping combustion of coal.In addition,the variations taking place in the surface functional groups of coal under different reaction times were investigated,and the variations achieved by the gas released under the pyrolysis and combustion of Juye coal were analyzed.As revealed from the results,the carbon conversion ratio and rate were elevated significantly,and the volume fraction of the outlet CO_(2)remained more than 92%under the oxygen carriers.The optimized reaction conditions to achieve the chemical looping combustion of Juye coal consisted of a temperature of 900℃,an OC/C ratio of 2,as well as a steam flow rate of 0.5 g·min^(-1).When the coal was undergoing the chemical looping combustion,volatiles primarily originated from the pyrolysis of aliphatic-CH_(3)and-CH_(2),and CO and H_(2)were largely generated from the gasification of aromatic carbon.In the CLC process,H_(2)O and CO_(2)began to separate out at 270℃,CH4 and tar began to precipitate at 370℃,and the amount of CO_(2)was continuously elevated with the rise of the temperature. 展开更多

Co-carbonization of weakly caking coal and zinc-containing dust to prepare highly reactive ferro-coke and collaboratively recover zinc powder is one of the feasible ways for steel enterprises to recycle zinc-containing dust.The pyrolysis mass loss behavior of adding blast furnace dust with different zinc contents to different ferro-coke materials was systematically studied by thermogravimetry and differential thermogravimetry analysis,and the kinetic mechanism of pyrolysis-reduction reaction of hybrid briquette was explored.The results of thermogravimetric curve analysis show that the addition of zinc oxide to the sample has no significant effect on the mass loss rate of the sample below 580℃,and the pyrolysis mass loss of zinc oxide mainly occurs between 800 and 1000℃.Kinetic analysis results show that the pyrolysis of zinc-containing samples is controlled by chemical reactions below 580℃.The reaction at 580–700℃ is controlled by the nucleation and growth model,and that above 700℃ is mainly controlled by diffusion.The results of X-ray diffraction analysis show that the pyrolysis process can effectively remove zinc oxide from ferro-coke. 展开更多

The content and the caking index of the heavy,the dense medium and the loose medium components of coal,obtained by extraction and stripping with CS_2/N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone mixed solvent(1:1 by volume),were studied and correlated with the caking property of raw coals.Images of the three group components after heat treatment were analyzed.The results show that both caking index(G) and maximum thickness of plastic layer(Y) of coals have a good linear relationship with the content of the medium component;the dense medium and the loose medium components are the two key factors to determine the caking property of raw coals-they are the source materials of fluidity and swelling of coal,respectively;the heavy component without the swelling and fluidity was cohered by the other components;two new indexes,which can extend current understanding of the caking properties,were introduced. 展开更多

To address the problem that granular compound fertilizer is prone to agglomeration during mechanized direct seeding of oilseed rape in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River,which causes clogging of the fertilizer discharger and leads to a reduction in the uniformity and stability of fertilizer discharge,research on the crushing mechanism of caking compound fertilizer was performed.Considering that it is difficult to measure the bonding force between caking fertilizer particles directly,a simulation model of caking composite fertilizer was established with the bonding model in EDEM discrete element software.To decrease error between the simulation and physical test results,the normal contact stiffness,tangential contact stiffness,critical normal stress,critical tangential stress,bonding radius,and other parameters of the bonding model of caking composite fertilizer were calibrated.The three-dimensional structure of the caking composite fertilizer was obtained via three-dimensional scanning,the critical crushing displacement and critical crushing force of the caking composite fertilizer were measured via compression testing with a mass spectrometer,and the optimal parameter combination of the bonding model was determined via EDEM discrete element simulation of the Plackett-Burman test,steepest ascent test,and Box-Behnken test.The results of the simulated compression tests under the optimal parameter combination show that the relative errors of the critical crushing displacement and critical crushing force with respect to the physical test results were 0.296%and 0.343%,respectively.Using the crushing rate of caking compound fertilizer as an evaluation index,the feasibility of the calibrated parameters was verified for a four-head spiral two-row fertilizer discharger installed in a direct seeding machine for oilseed rape.The results show that the relative errors of the caking fertilizer crushing rates from the simulation relative to those of the bench and field tests were 5.81%and 5.06%,respectively,indicating that the calibration parameters of the discrete element model were accurate and could be used for parameter analysis of caking fertilizer with a discrete element model.These results can provide a reference for the structural optimization of fertilizer discharger crushing of caking fertilizer of direct seeding machine for oilseed rape. 展开更多

Crystal caking is a decisive factor affecting the quality of high-end fine chemicals,whereas lack of shape-to-caking understanding results in considerable waste of time,severely delaying high-end fine chemical development.On this basis,a morphology-based caking evaluation model is developed with 74%and 96%time savings compared to previous modeling and non-modeling experiments,respectively,while guaranteeing superior accuracy.The crystal morphology is expressed as a function of the aspect ratio and the particle size distribution.The quantitative relationships between these parameters and the caking tendency are deduced,firstly achieving morphology anti-caking criterion establishment.For D-allulose crystals,considering humidity,and particle size,an aspect ratio is below 3 is the standard for combating caking,which has not been reported previously.Herein,the specific effect of crystal morphology on caking behavior is quantitatively described.The knowledge obtained can be applied to rapidly and quantitatively design anti-caking storage systems for products in warehouses. 展开更多

This work proposed a strategy to improve the caking index of polyethylene terephthalate(PET)waste,in which low-temperature pyrolysis treatment(LTPT)was used to depolymerize PET waste.The mechanism of G modification was revealed combining thermogravimetric(TG)analysis,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,pyrolysis-gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection,and solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.Furthermore,crucible coking experiments were also conducted using industrial coal mixture and treated PET with the optimum G(PET300)or raw PET to evaluate the applicability of PET waste in coal-blending coking.According to characterization results of coke reactivity(CR),coke strength after reaction(CSR)indices,TG-related curves,pore volumes,and Raman spectra of the resultant cokes,LTPT could greatly increase the G of PET,and the optimum temperature was 300℃.Specifically,compared with the coke obtained from the blend with PET,the CR of the coke produced from the blend with PET300 decreased by 4.9%,whereas the CSR of the increased by 7.4%,suggesting that LTPT could increase the proportion of PET used for coal-blending coking.The improvement in G is attributed to the changes in C-O/C=O ratio,aliphatic H and aromaticity caused by LTPT. 展开更多

Whilst caking occurs via several different mechanisms,absorption and migration of moisture is frequently the most dominant mechanism within the food and pharmaceutical industry.Fully understanding the propensity to cake is important for minimising down-stream process issues,however most characterisation techniques assume that moisture induced caking occurs homogenously through the sample resulting in a uniformly caked powder bed.In this study,the effect of moisture induced caking on powder flowability was investigated using powder rheology.Several materials,including skimmed milk powder(SMP)and sulphated methyl ester(SME)were stored for several days under controlled humidity conditions.The flow energies,a measure of the resistance to flow,were measured at 24 h intervals using an FT4 Powder Rheometer.As the energy is measured as a function of the bed height,variations in the powder bed are also captured.The results demonstrated that caking does not always occur uniformly,instead a caked region(or crust)forms at the air-powder interface and then progresses through the powder bed.Furthermore,the strength of this caked region was shown to increase over several days before stabilising. 展开更多

We investigated the influence of particle shape and solubility on the caking behavior of trisodium phosphate by considering the adhesion free energy and crystal bridge theory. Caking of trisodium phosphate during the drying process under static conditions is a two-step process: adhesion followed by crystal bridge formation between particles. The adhesion free energy plays an important role in adhesion. Trisodium phosphate particles cannot adhere to each other and cake when the adhesion free energy is greater than a critical value, which varies with particle shape. Compared with granular particles, cylindrical particles have larger contact area between particles, which results in more crystal bridges forming and a higher caking ratio. Thus, the critical value is about 100 mJ/m^2 for cylindrical particles, but 60 mJ/m^2 for granular particles at 25 ℃. Concerning the solubility, when particles are similar shapes and soluble in the rinsing liquid, the caking ratio has a linear relationship with adhesion free energy. However, if the particles are insoluble in the rinsing liquid, caking can be completely prevented regardless of adhesion free energy because no crystal bridges form during the growth process. Hence, caking of trisodium phosphate particles could be inhibited by screening rinsing liquids, and optimizing the particle shape and size distribution. 展开更多

L-Lysine,an essential amino acid,is often produced in the granular form of L-lysine-monohydrochloride(L-lysine-HCl).To address chemical waste and processing cost concerns associated with the production of L-lysine-HCl granules,an alternative process has been recently developed for the production of L-lysine as granules of L-lysine-carbonate(L-lysine-CO_(3)).In the present study,the moisture sorption,thermal,and caking properties of L-lysine-CO_(3) granules were investigated in comparison with commercial L-lysine-HCl granules.L-Lysine-CO_(3) granules showed a popcorn-like surface structure(59.0%crystallinity),while L-lysine-HCl granules exhibited an angular crystalline structure(72.9%crystallinity).L-Lysine-CO_(3) granules had a less compact structure than L-lysine-HCl granules and showed excellent initial flowability comparable to L-lysine-HCl granules.L-Lysine-CO_(3) granules were more hygroscopic than L-lysine-HCl granules,probably due to their lower crystallinity and less compact structure.L-Lysine-CO_(3) granules began to undergo thermal decomposition at 192℃,probably due to CO_(2) release,followed by melting at 234℃ and further decomposition,while L-lysine-HCl granules underwent melting at 251℃,and then began to undergo thermal decomposition at 260℃.No glass transition was observed for either lysine-CO_(3) or L-lysine-HCl granules.Storage test under pressurized and accelerated conditions showed that L-lysine-CO_(3) granules were more prone to caking and formed harder agglomerates than L-lysine-HCl granules.The results showed that L-lysine-CO_(3) granules were more hygroscopic,less thermally stable,and more prone to caking,compared to commercial L-lysine-HCl granules.However,these properties of L-lysine-CO_(3) granules were at acceptable levels for commercial use,thus L-lysine-CO_(3) granules have high potential for commercial development. 展开更多

Sesame is the most widely produced oilseed crop with the highest oil content (45.0%–65.0%) in Asia,Africa.The seed contains a high amount of protein (19%–35%),dietary fiber (15%–20%),carbohydrate (14%–20%),polyunsaturated fatty acids,and micronutrients.It also contains lignans like sesamol,sesamin,and sesamolin,which protect the oil from oxidative rancidity.The seed also provides seed cake with nutritional value after oil extraction,which is used as a biopolymer in the applications of food packaging,bakery,and confectionary industries,as well as in the preparation of edible and coating films.It can replace commercial expanded polystyrene,which is non-biodegradable in nature.Being the richest source of nutrients,sesame seeds and oilseed cakes have been implemented in different food processing industries.The present review focused on the comprehensive study of biochemical compositions,anti-nutrients,phytochemicals,and antioxidants of sesame seeds and seed cakes and their applications in foods industries. 展开更多

Insight into the physicochemical characteristics and biological features of dietary polysaccharides extracted from palm kernel cake

Palm kernel cake(PKC),a major by-product of the palm oil industry,is rich in non-starch polysaccharides.In this study,two polysaccharide fractions,precipitated with acetic acid(PPA)and ethanol(PPE),respectively,were extracted from PKC using a 2 mol/L NaOH solution.The molecular weight,sugar composition,structural characteristics,morphology,antioxidant activity,as well as in vitro stimulated digestion were investigated in detail.The results revealed that due to its poor solubility of PPA in water,the detected molecular weight of PPA was only 2040 g/mol,which was significantly lower than that of PPE(65,300 g/mol).Although PPA and PPE had a similar sugar composition with varying contents,mannose was the predominant monosaccharide in both,accounting for 87.71%and 60.40%,respectively.Both PPA and PPE were primarily composed of crystalline mannan,consisting of mannopyranosyl units linked by(1→4)-β-glycosidic bonds,along with a small amount of lignin.PPA possibly contained a higher proportion of crystalline mannan,whereas PPE had a larger amount of arabinoxylan and galactomannan.Atomic force microscope revealed a stacked morphology for both PPA and PPE.PPA exhibited a higher scavenging rate against DPPH•and ABTS^(+)•but a weaker HO•scavenging activity and reducing power compared with PPE.Within the polysaccharide concentration range of 0.5-5.0 mg/mL,PPA and PPB demonstrated the strongest scavenging activity against ABTS^(+)•,with the highest scavenging rates exceeding 91%.However,PPA and PPB exhibited the weakest scavenging activity against HO•,with their highest HO•scavenging rates reaching only 44.91%and 55.86%,respectively.The antioxidant activities of both PPA and PPE were weaker than that of ascorbic acid.PPA remained almost stable in the in vitro simulated saliva fluid,while PPE exhibited weaker resistance to it.Both PPA and PPE exhibited weak resistance to the in vitro simulated gastric digestion fluids,but remained relatively stable in the in vitro simulated small-intestinal digestion fluid.The differences in physicochemical properties between PPA and PPE likely played an important role in their distinct biological activities.These findings suggest potential utilization of PKC in exploring dietary polysaccharides with favorable antioxidant activity and unique digestive characteristics. 展开更多

Combined application of gasification filter cake and Portulaca oleracea to promote soil quality and tomato yields under irrigation with brackish water

Brackish water(BW)irrigation may cause soil quality deterioration and thereby a decrease in crop yields.Here we examined the impacts of applying gasification filter cake(GFC),intercropping with Portulaca oleracea(PO),and their combination on soil quality,nutrient uptake by plants and tomato yields under BW irrigation.The treatments evaluated included(i)freshwater irrigation(Control),(ii)BW irrigation,(iii)GFC application under BW irrigation(BW+GFC),(iv)intercropping with PO under BW irrigation(BW+PO),and(v)the combined application of GFC and PO under BW irrigation(BW+PO+GFC).Overall,the use of BW for irrigation resulted in a decline in both soil quality(assessed by a soil quality index(SQI)integrating a wide range of key soil properties including salinity,nutrient availability and microbial activities)and crop yields.Nevertheless,when subjected to BW irrigation,the application of GFC successfully prevented soil salinity.Additionally,the intercropping of PO decreased the soil sodium adsorption ratio and improved the absorption of nutrients by plants.As a result,the BW+GFC+PO treatment generally showed higher tomato yield as compared to other BW-related treatments(i.e.BW,BW+GFC and BW+PO).Compared to BW,the BW+GFC+PO treatment had an average increase of 24.7% in the total fruit yield of four Cropping Seasons.Furthermore,the BW+GFC+PO treatment consistently exhibited the highest fruit quality index(FQI).Taken together,the combined application of GFC and PO is effective in promoting soil quality and crop yields under BW irrigation. 展开更多

The C.oleifera oil processing industry generates large amounts of solid wastes,including C.oleifera shell(COS)and C.oleifera cake(COC).Distinct from generally acknowledged lignocellulosic biomass(corn stover,bamboo,birch,etc.),Camellia wastes contain diverse bioactive substances in addition to the abundant lignocellulosic components,and thus,the biorefinery utilization of C.oleifera processing byproducts involves complicated processing technologies.This reviewfirst summarizes various technologies for extracting and converting the main components in C.oleifera oil processing byproducts into value-added chemicals and biobased materials,as well as their potential applications.Microwave,ultrasound,and Soxhlet extractions are compared for the extraction of functional bioactive components(tannin,flavonoid,saponin,etc.),while solvothermal conversion and pyrolysis are discussed for the conversion of lignocellulosic components into value-added chemicals.The application areas of these chemicals according to their properties are introduced in detail,including utilizing antioxidant and anti-in-flammatory properties of the bioactive substances for the specific application,as well as drop-in chemicals for the substitution of unrenewable fossil fuel-derived products.In addition to chemical production,biochar fabricated from COS and its applications in thefields of adsorption,supercapacitor,soil remediation and wood composites are comprehensively reviewed and discussed.Finally,based on the compositions and structural characteristics of C.oleifera byproducts,the development of full-component valorization strategies and the expansion of the appli-cationfields are proposed. 展开更多
