Computing upper bounds of the positive real roots of some polynomials is a key step of those real root isolation algorithms based on continued fraction expansion and Vincent's theorem.The authors give a new algorithm for computing an upper bound of positive roots in this paper.The complexity of the algorithm is O(n log(uH-l))additions and multiplications where u is the optimal upper bound satisfying Theorem 3.1 of this paper and n is the degree of the polynomial.The method together w辻h some tricks have been implemented as a software package logcf using C language.Experiments on many benchmarks show that logcf is competitive with Root Intervals of Mathematica and the function realroot of Maple averagely and it is much faster than existing open source real root solvers in many test cases. 展开更多

Using a uniform linear array(ULA) composed of M sensors, this method usually estimates L signal DOAs by finding roots that lie closest to the unit circle of a(2M-1)-order polynomial, where L 〈 M. A novel efficient root-MUSIC-based method for direction estimation is presented, in which the order of polynomial is efficiently reduced to 2L. Compared with the unitary root-MUSIC(U-root-MUSIC) approach which involves real-valued computations only in the subspace decomposition stage, both tasks of subspace decomposition and polynomial rooting are implemented with real-valued computations in the new technique,which hence shows a significant efficiency advantage over most state-of-the-art techniques. It is well-recognized that a transfer system response delay that reduces the test stability inevitably exists in real-time dynamic hybrid testing (RTDHT). This paper focuses on the delay-dependent stability and added damping of SDOF systems in RTDHT. The exponential delay term is transferred into a rational fraction by the Pad6 approximation, and the delay-dependent stability conditions and instability mechanism of SDOF RTDHT systems are investigated by the root locus technique. First, the stability conditions are discussed separately for the cases of stiffness, mass, and damping experimental substructure. The use of root locus plots shows that the added damping effect and instability mechanism for mass are different from those for stiffness. For the stiffness experimental substructure case, the instability results from the inherent mode because of an obvious negative damping effect of the delay. For the mass case, the delay introduces an equivalent positive damping into the inherent mode, and instability occurs at an added high frequency mode. Then, the compound stability condition is investigated for a general case and the results show that the mass ratio may have both upper and lower limits to remain stable. Finally, a high-emulational virtual shaking table model is built to validate the stability conclusions. 展开更多

Our work generalizes a technical result of R. Bauer, presented in the classical monograph “Basic Algebra” of N. Jacobson. Objective: To assess the short-term effect of scaling and root planing (SRP) and essential-oils mouthwash on the levels of specific bacteria in Chinese adults. Methods: Fifty Chinese adults with chronic periodontitis were randomly assigned to full-mouth SRP or a 7-d essential-oils mouthwash regimen. In addition, 22 periodontally healthy adults used essential-oils mouthwash for 7 d. Clinical examination and plaque/saliva sampling were performed at baseline and on Day 7. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to measure Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn), Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), Prevotella intermedia (Pi), and total bacterial loads in saliva, supra- and sub-gingival plaque samples. Results: The detection frequencies of four tested species remained unchanged after either treatment. However, the bacterial loads of Fn, Pg, and Pi were significantly reduced by SRP; the mean reduction of bacterial counts in saliva ranged from 52.2% to 62.5% (p<0.01), in supragingival plaque from 68.2% to 81.0% (p<0.05), and in subgingival plaque from 67.9% to 93.0% (p<0.01). Total bacterial loads were reduced after SRP in supra- and sub-gingival plaque (p<0.05). Essential-oils mouthwash reduced Fn levels in supragingival plaque by a mean of 53.2%, and reduced total bacterial loads in supra- and sub-gingival plaque (p<0.01). In subgingival plaque from periodontal patients, Pg and Pi reductions were high after SRP compared to essential-oils mouthwash (93.0% vs. 37.7% and 87.0% vs. 21.0%, p<0.05). No significant bacterial reduction was observed in periodontally healthy subjects using essential-oils mouthwash. Conclusions: SRP and essential-oils mouthwash both have an impact on saliva and gingival plaque flora in Chinese periodontitis patients in 7 d, with greater microbiological improvement by SRP. 展开更多

Comparisons between the new maps and the famous Newton-Raphson method are carried out, including fixed point determination, stability analysis and measure of the mean convergence time, which is confirmed by our analytical convergence time model. Stability of solutions is confirmed by measuring the Lyapunov exponent over the parameter space of each map. A generalization of the second map is proposed, giving rise to a family of new maps to address the same problem. This work is developed within the language of discrete dynamical systems. 展开更多
