Global submarine cable network and digital divide

As the most important large-scale communication infrastructure in the world today,submarine cable can profoundly reflect the global Internet communication pattern,and is of great significance for understanding the global digital divide.We used multi-scale and network analysis methods to depict the distribution pattern,network structure and spatio-temporal evolution of global submarine cables at the national and landing point scales,in order to analyze the current situation,challenges and main directions of global digital divide governance.Results show that:(1)spatial distribution of global submarine cables is unbalanced,the United States and Europe are the concentrated distribution areas of submarine cables and global information flow centers;(2)core connections of the global submarine cable network are only composed of a tiny minority of countries or regions or landing points,and have strong geographical proximity and clustered-type characteristic,noting that multitudinous landing points of developed countries are at the semi-periphery or even periphery of the network;(3)submarine cables can alleviate the global digital divide through the three paths of infrastructure universalization,digital ecosystem reconstruction and economic empowerment,and the global digital divide governance still faces the dilemma of the differences in digital strategy development and the lack of a governance system.However,due to the increasingly important position of cities in developing countries in the international communication pattern,the global digital divide problem is being alleviated. 展开更多

Submarine cable network is one of the most important connectivity infrastructures in the digital era.In the past 20 years,the submarine cable network of Chinese mainland has formed a complex connectivity structure.This paper focuses on exploring the structure and evolution of the submarine cable network of Chinese mainland.The results show that the evolution can be divided into four stages:an initial stage(1993-1998),a developmental stage(1999-2002),a stagnation stage(2003-2015)and an accelerated stage(2016-2018).The connectivity structure can be analyzed at micro,meso and macro scales.Statistically,the connectivity increased significantly overall,but showed significant differences in space.For the microscale,the landing cities were characterized by“extensive but low,exclusive and high”;for the mesoscale,the connectivity of countries or regions was characterized by“distance attenuation”as a whole,but,in part,by a“regional identity”;for the macroscale,intercontinental connectivity differences have been declining.The hierarchy has been upgraded from a“3 system”to a“2+3 system”.Finally,this paper discusses the interaction between submarine cable network construction and international relations,and puts forward policy suggestions for China’s submarine cable construction. 展开更多

As a kind of large-scale connectivity infrastructure,submarine cables play a vital role in international telecommunication,socio-economic development and national defense security.However,the current understanding about the spatial pattern of global submarine cable network is relatively limited.In this article,we analyze the spatial distribution and connectivity pattern of global submarine cables,and identify their strategic pivots and strategic channels.The main conclusions are as follows:(1)The spatial distribution of global submarine cables is significantly unbalanced,which is characterized by the facts that the distribution of submarine cable lines is similar to that of sea lanes,and the agglomerations of landing stations are distributed unevenly along the coastline.(2)The connectivity pattern of global submarine cable network has a significant scale effect.At the micro,meso and macro scales,the connectivity structure presents chain model,cluster model and hub-and-spoke model,respectively.(3)The distribution of strategic pivots and strategic channels shows a pyramidal hierarchical feature.Singapore ranks highest among all the strategic pivots,while the Gulf of Aden and the Strait of Malacca rank highest among the strategic channels.Based on the identification of strategic pivots and channels,six strategic regions have been divided,which face various network security risks and need special attention and vigilance. 展开更多

Firstly,the concepts of the traveling wave entropy and the feature function of traveling wave entropy were defined.Then the statistic characters of the traveling wave entropy feature function,mean value and variance were analyzed after the zero-order component of the traveling wave of online cable was selected to serve as the observed object.Finally,the new recognition algorithm of minimum risk neural network was pre- sented.The simulation experiments show that the recognitions of the early fault states can be completed correctly by using the proposed recognition algorithm.The classes of cable faults include in 1-phase ground faults,and the 2-phase short circuit faults or ground faults and the 3-phase short circuit faults or ground faults,open circuit.The fault resistance range is 1×10^(-1)~1×10~9Ω. 展开更多

Purpose–The traction cable is paralleled with the existing traction network of electrified railway through transverse connecting line to form the scheme of long distance power supply for the traction network.This paper aims to study the scheme composition and power supply distance(PSD)of the scheme.Design/methodology/approach–Based on the structure of parallel traction network(referred to as“cable traction network(CTN)”),the power supply modes(PSMs)are divided into cableþdirect PSM and cableþautotransformer(AT)PSM(including Japanese mode,French mode and new mode).Taking cableþJapanese AT PSM as an example,the scheme of long distance power supply for CTN under the PSMs of co-phase and out-of-phase power supply are designed.On the basis of establishing the equivalent circuit model and the chain circuit model of CTN,taking the train working voltage as the constraint condition,and based on the power flow calculation of multiple train loads,the calculation formula and process for determining the PSD of CTN are given.The impedance and PSD of CTN under the cableþAT PSM are simulated and analyzed,and a certain line is taken as an example to compare the scheme design.Findings–Results show that the equivalent impedance of CTN under the cableþAT PSM is smaller,and the PSD is about 2.5 times of that under the AT PSM,which can effectively increase the PSD and the flexibility of external power supply location.Originality/value–The research content can effectively improve the PSD of traction power supply system and has important reference value for the engineering application of the scheme. 展开更多

In order to improve the multiplexing capability of the optical sensors based on the lower interferential optic fiber sensing technology and the white light fiber-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer,reflective ladder topology network ( RLT) with tailored formula was proposed. The topology network consists of 6 rungs sensing elements linked by 5 couplers. Two cases with different choices of couplers were contrasted: one is equal coupling ratio,and the other is tailored coupling ratio. Through the simulation of these two cases,the detailed multiplexing capability was analyzed,and accordingly the experiments were also carried out. The simulation results showed that,the tailored formula enhances the multiplexing capability of the structure. In the first case, the maximum number of sensors which can be multiplexed is 8,and in the other case is 12 fiber optic sensors. The experimental results have a good agreement with numerical simulation results. Thus,it is considered expedient to incorporate RLT into large-scale building,grounds,bridges,dams,tunnels,highways and perimeter security. 展开更多

An exact-designed mesh shape with favorable surface accuracy is of practical significance to the performance of large cable-network antenna reflectors. In this study, a novel design approach that could guide the generation of exact spatial parabolic mesh configurations of such reflector was proposed. By incorporating the traditional force density method with the standard finite element method, this proposed approach had taken the deformation effects of flexible ring truss supports into consideration, and searched for the desired mesh shapes that can satisfy the requirement that all the free nodes are exactly located on the objective paraboloid. Compared with the conventional design method,a remarkable improvement of surface accuracy in the obtained mesh shapes had been demonstrated by numerical examples. The present work would provide a helpful technical reference for the mesh shape design of such cable-network antenna reflector in engineering practice. 展开更多

To measure in-situ soil moisturecontents, a distributed measurement system for in-situ soil moisture content (SM-DTS) is introduced.The system is based on carbon-fiber heated cable (CFHC) technology that has been developed to enhancethe measuring accuracy of in-situ soil moisture content. Using CFHC technique, a temperature characteristicvalue (Tt) can be defined from temperatureetime curves. A relationship among Tt, soil thermalimpedance coefficient and soil moisture content is then established in laboratory. The feasibility of theSM-DTS technology to provide distributed measurements of in-situ soil moisture content is verifiedthrough field tests. The research reported herein indicates that the proposed SM-DTS is capable ofmeasuring in-situ soil moisture content over long distances and large areas. 展开更多

Control of Pinhole Defects Formation in Semi-flexible Coaxial Cable by Vertical Tin-Plating Process 被引量:4

Holistic tin-plating on the outer conductor is one of the key processes in the manufacture of semi-flexible coaxial cable, which is widely applied to the third generation (3G) mobile communication system. However, in the traditional horizontal tin-plating process, disadvantages such as the pinhole defects and low productivity effect cannot be avoided. In this paper, a vertical tin-plating process was proposed to reduce the pinhole defects and improve the tincoating quality. Compared with the traditional horizontal tin-plating process, the immersion length was reduced from 300-400 mm to 10-100 mm and the tin-plating time was reduced from 7 s to 3 s in the proposed method. The experimental results indicate that immersion length and time are key parameters for the tin-plating quality. With this new tin-plating process, the experimental results show that the pinhole defects can be eliminated effectively by controlling the immersion depth below 100 mm and tin-plating time at 3 s. The thickness of tin-coating increased from not more than 5 μm to 12.3 μm with the proposed vertical tin-plating process. Meanwhile, the thickness of the intermetallic compounds (IMCs) layer between the tin-coating and copper wires was reduced from 3.26 μm to 0.62 μm if the immersion time decreased from 30 s to 1 s. Besides, a self-developed flux, which possesses a boiling point or decomposed temperature of active components over 300℃, exhibits a better efficiency in reducing the pinhole formation. 展开更多

In order to improve the reliability of power supply,the sophisticated design of the structure of electric cable network has become an important issue for modern urban distribution networks.In this paper,an electric cable path planning model based on heuristic optimization algorithm considering mixed-land scenario is proposed.Firstly,based on different land samples,the kernel density estimation(KDE)and the analytic hierarchy process(AHP)are used to estimate the construction cost of each unit grid,in order to construct the objective function of comprehensive investment for electric cable loop network.Then,the ant colony optimization(ACO)was improved in pheromone concentration,factor increment and search direction to accelerate the solving speed,and the cable path planning result with minimum construction cost is obtained.Finally,the feeder’s tie line of the cable loop network is planned by the genetic algorithm(GA)to achieve the minimum operating cost.In the case analysis,compared with the traditional method,not only the subjective factors in the process of investment estimation can be avoided,but also the speed of model solving and the quality of the optimal solution are improved. 展开更多

我国偏远欠发达地区仍存在部分全盲电缆配电网,其历史数据丢失且缺乏监测设备,无法实现拓扑管控。为此,提出一种基于边缘扰动分析的全盲电缆配电网广义拓扑恢复方法,不同于传统拓扑辨识,该方法在无内部监测及历史数据下,实现全盲网络拓... 我国偏远欠发达地区仍存在部分全盲电缆配电网,其历史数据丢失且缺乏监测设备,无法实现拓扑管控。为此,提出一种基于边缘扰动分析的全盲电缆配电网广义拓扑恢复方法,不同于传统拓扑辨识,该方法在无内部监测及历史数据下,实现全盲网络拓扑结构、分支长度与分支截面的“一次性”完备恢复。该方法通过捕捉全盲电缆配电网络边缘节点的自然暂态扰动响应,利用扰动传播分析提取扰动共有传播路径长度,基于边缘节点间共有传播路径长度的相关性分析恢复拓扑结构;进一步结合边缘扰动响应波形的内部畸变点分析计算各分支长度,并依据配电网分支规律,实现分支截面的逐步提取。真实10 kV配电网的测试表明,该方法能有效实现广义拓扑的恢复,其灵敏度分析验证了关键参数的影响范围。 展开更多
