But, currently no OCR technique can convert calligraphy character images into text, nor can the existing Handwriting Character Recognition approach does not work for it. This paper proposes a novel approach to efficiently retrieving Chinese calligraphy characters on the basis of similarity: calligraphy character image is represented by a collection of discriminative features, and high retrieval speed with reasonable effectiveness is achieved. First, calligraphy characters that have no possibility similar to the query are filtered out step by step by comparing the character complexity, stroke density and stroke protrusion. Then, similar calligraphy characters axe retrieved and ranked according to their matching cost produced by approximate shape match. In order to speed up the retrieval, we employed high dimensional data structure - PK-tree. Finally, the efficiency of the algorithm is demonstrated by a preliminary experiment with 3012 calligraphy character images.展开更多
When a feedback system has components described by non-rational transfer functions, a standard practice in designing such a system is to replace the non-rational functions with rational approximants and then carry out...When a feedback system has components described by non-rational transfer functions, a standard practice in designing such a system is to replace the non-rational functions with rational approximants and then carry out the design with the approximants by means of a method that copes with rational systems. In order to ensure that the design carried out with the approximants still provides satisfactory results for the original system, a criterion of approximation should be explicitly taken into account in the design formulation. This paper derives such a criterion for multi-input multi-output(MIMO) feedback systems whose design objective is to ensure that the absolute values of every error and every controller output components always stay within prescribed bounds whenever the inputs satisfy certain bounding conditions. The obtained criterion generalizes a known result which was derived for single-input single-output(SISO) systems; furthermore, for a given rational approximant matrix, it is expressed as a set of inequalities that can be solved in practice. Finally, a controller for a binary distillation column is designed by using the criterion in conjunction with the method of inequalities. The numerical results clearly demonstrate that the usefulness of the criterion in obtaining a design solution for the original system.展开更多

It resolves two critical problems in previous tree kernel methods of RDC. First, a new tree kernel is presented to better capture the inherent structural information in a parse tree by enabling the standard convolution tree kernel with context-sensitiveness and approximate matching of sub-trees. Second, an enriched parse tree structure is proposed to well derive necessary structural information, e.g., proper latent annotations, from a parse tree. Evaluation on the ACE RDC corpora shows that both the new tree kernel and the enriched parse tree structure contribute significantly to RDC and our tree kernel method much outperforms the state-of-the-art ones.展开更多
To improve the performance of sound source localization based on distributed microphone arrays in noisy and reverberant environments,a sound source localization method was proposed.This method exploited the inherent s...To improve the performance of sound source localization based on distributed microphone arrays in noisy and reverberant environments,a sound source localization method was proposed.This method exploited the inherent spatial sparsity to convert the localization problem into a sparse recovery problem based on the compressive sensing(CS) theory.In this method two-step discrete cosine transform(DCT)-based feature extraction was utilized to cover both short-time and long-time properties of the signal and reduce the dimensions of the sparse model.Moreover,an online dictionary learning(DL) method was used to dynamically adjust the dictionary for matching the changes of audio signals,and then the sparse solution could better represent location estimations.In addition,we proposed an improved approximate l_0norm minimization algorithm to enhance reconstruction performance for sparse signals in low signal-noise ratio(SNR).The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by simulation results where the locations of multiple sources can be obtained in the noisy and reverberant conditions.展开更多
