In the past oral Caribbean and African cultures, performances by the“griots”reminded the community of its heroic past.In colonial studies, performance is a way for the colonized people to reconnect with its original soul and language and to become magnificent of creativity like the storyteller Solibo in Chamoiseau’s Solibo Magnifique(Caribbean). In Chamoiseau’s novel, the Black policemen who came to investigate on Solibo’s sudden death during the performance look grotesque. They mimic the French colonizers with their“baton”and their racism at thinking evil of the Black community and they provoke laughter.Mimicry and the irony it conveys, subverts the formerly ironclad authority of the colonial order(Homi K.Bhabha in Location of Culture). The Cameroonian writer Werewere Liking-Gnépo also warns the Africans of the danger of wearing the White Mask of the colonizers(like Fanon in Black Skin,White Masks). She demonstrates in her Song/Novel She will be of Jasper and Coral, that while the African Mask empowers the performer of metaphysical powers, the White Mask of colonialism on the contrary weakens the performer who internalizes his inferiority and becomes complicit of his subjugation.Fortunately,Werewere Liking-Gnépo shows ithat the White Mask of colonialism can be used to mimic the harshness and corruption of the Colonial order and in doing so to bring back regeneration of Africa. 展开更多

When the umbrellas were held up against the tear gas attack in the protest on September 28, 2014, the hot issue raised by the marathon-like Yellow Umbrella Movement was not only the matter of politics but also a coincidence created for the Hong Kong locals to face, or to be faced with an already moot cliche: How the Hongkongese can redef'me and redeem their almost lost socio-cultural identity, particularly under the increasingly hegemonic influences and the socio-cultural invasion of the mainland after the 1997 Handover. My present paper is not intended to discuss the topic of identity on the platform of politics, or the postcolonial studies such as transculturation or cultural hybridty. But instead, I am far more interested in locating such issue on the aesthetic dimension of collective memory, which is revealed in two local contemporary Hong Kong compositions. In the process of shaping and reshaping a form of"HongKongeseness" in which the composers tend to create and the local listeners tend to experience, albeit transient, can appear in every nuance of the sonic metaphor embedded in the pre-existing indigenous tunes of a self-contained compositional work. 展开更多

William Somerset Maugham was one of the most popular British writers of his era. Many of his works are closely related to China, among which is the famous novel The Painted Veil. This novel narrates the love story between the heroine Kitty,an attractive but vainglorious middle-class lady, and the intelligent bacteriologist Walter Fane. This thesis aims at exploring the hetero image of China in The Painted Veil from the perspective of imagology. It comprises four chapters.Chapter one introduces the definition of the terms“Image”and“hetero image”.Chapter two analyzes Maugham’s diversified concepts of China:one is the positive and good image, and the other is the negative image.Chapter three illustrates the specific images of China revealed in the novel The Painted Veil,on both positive and negative aspects. After the exploration of the image of China from the perspective of imagology,we can sum up that actually, the image of China in Maugham’s eyes indicated in The Painted Veil is not the real China. It is a combination of the real world observed by Maugham and the imaginative world conceived by him influenced by his own specific culture and society. 展开更多

Since modern Saudi novel vividly captures the essence of cultural and social life in Saudi Arabia, this paper aims to unveil the manifestation of historical events that generated new issues and discourses shaping modern Saudi culture and society as depicted in Aziz Mohammed’s The Critical Case of a Man Called K(2021).The examination of its cultural and social context, thus, serves as an evaluation of a historical record that depicts the episteme of modern Saudi society. However,as ample as previous works on Saudi literature may be,most of them disregard the use of New Historicism in examining modern Saudi novels. This paper, therefore, utilizes New Historicism to unveil the nature of modern Saudi episteme as depicted by the young author Aziz Mohammed in The Critical Case of a Man Called K(2021)and to gain insight into modern Saudi discourses and issues shaped by historical and economic events. The study finds that the novel depicts a dystopian reality due to the implications of both late capitalism and globalization in modern Saudi Arabia.Furthermore, the novel highlights how far the discourse of Saudi Vision 2030,with its various aims, penetrates both society and culture, shaping a great part of modern Saudi episteme. The paper concludes by affirming Mohammed’s novel assertion of New Historicism’s main assumption that the text cannot be divorced from its historical, cultural, and social context and that it serves as a record indicative of a specific and unique episteme. 展开更多

This article utilizes Katherine Mansfield’s short story The Garden Party as the research object to explore the narrative generation conditions of ethical experience in the text. Through a close analysis of the novel’s narrative structure and key scenes, the article argues that ethical discomfort does not evolve into enduring moral judgments within the text;rather, it is continually managed and deferred through the interplay of aesthetic order, familial discourse, and the distribution of social roles. The novel eschews a linear trajectory of ethical awakening, instead crafting a narrative mechanism that keeps ethical experience palpable yet inarticulable. The female subject is given the role of sensing ethical incongruity, but lacks the narrative position from which to articulate it as judgment. Consequently, ethics remains confined to the level of personalization and unimplementability. Far from a narrative of moral growth or awakening, The Garden Party exposes why ethical judgment has become structurally unrealizable in modern narratives. 展开更多

As an independent aesthetic category,"meteorology"holds a pivotal position in literary works. The emergence of the category of meteorological aesthetics lies in the observation of philosophical concepts and attitudes towards life contained in the ontology of the universe, and the realization of the aesthetic realm of"unity of man and nature, unity of things and oneself"between humans and nature.Mr.Liu Zhicheng,as a meteorological poet, devoted his life to the cause of meteorology and China's meteorological technology. The poem Love Song of the Wind and Clouds is a portrayal of the poet's life. The book reflects the poet's consistent pursuit of traditional aesthetics and natural atmosphere, and contains the poet's personal insights into his own spirit and life ideals, with extremely high poetic value. Therefore, this paper takes a new perspective of meteorological aesthetics theory and aims to explore the aesthetic relationship between natural meteorology and humanistic spirit,in order to appreciate the spiritual charm and aesthetic connotation in Liu Zhicheng's poetry collection Love Song of the Wind and Clouds. 展开更多

The historical image of Ouyang Xiu constructed during the Song Dynasty evolved from a multifaceted portrayal that balanced his political and literary achievements into a singular cultural symbol. In the Northern Song Dynasty, writings by Ouyang Xiu's family and epitaphs by his colleagues crafted a balanced narrative emphasizing both his official duties and literary merits, thus constructing a dual image of him as a principled remonstrator and a literary master. In the Southern Song Dynasty, official historiography gradually eroded his complex persona as a political reformer by selectively trimming political disputes and emphasizing his literary lineage, ultimately establishing him as a cultural exemplar beyond factional strife.Throughout this evolution of historical writing,Ouyang Xiu's sharpness as a remonstrator was gradually obscured in historical texts, while his image as a literary master, revered by all, became firmly established. The reshaping of Ouyang Xiu's image in historical writings across the Northern and Southern Song dynasties not only reflects the logic of selecting scholar-official role models under the influence of official ideology but also reveals the inherent pattern whereby individual distinctiveness fades into symbolic construction in historical writing. 展开更多

During the War of Resistance Against Japan, poetry in Xinjiang actively participated in the grand narrative of national salvation. This article systematically studies the writing of“consciousness of the Chinese national community”through historical investigation and close textual reading, revealing the mechanisms of its three-dimensional construction:in terms of creative subjects, displaced literati, local poets, and writers from Northeast China each contribute to a sense of community through dual perspectives, empathetic responses to trauma, and reflections on homeland and nation;in terms of artistic expression, poetry forms a unique poetics through geographic imagery, aestheticization of the united front, and narratives of suffering;in terms of ethnic representation, minority writers integrate ethnic traditions with patriotic sentiment, achieving a transformation from policy recognition to emotional identification. The study further explores how this writing transcends a single ethnic perspective to construct a paradigm of collective identity that shares the fate of all ethnic groups and its underlying mechanisms. 展开更多

After the“Ballad Movement”in the early 20th century revealed and systematized the Liang Zhu legend, numerous literary works had created a rich body of classic reinterpretations. This paper argues that Yang Yinshen’s A Storm stands as the earliest modern literary creation that actively embraced the folk Liang Zhu legend.By situating the ancient story of Zhu Yingtai in a contemporary context, the play replaces the traditional core values of“loyalty and righteousness”with modern themes of pursuing free love, amplifying women’s autonomy.Through a modern tragic love story,it achieves a classic reinterpretation of the classical folk legend. The“revised narrative”in A Storm primarily involves derivative adaptations, incorporating contemporary revisions to characters and themes. Its three-act structure also forms the foundational framework for subsequent reinterpretations of the Liang Zhu legend. The play demonstrates a conscious absorption of the rebellious spirit in folk literature, incorporates dialectal speech, and provides valuable insights into how modern literature can utilize oral traditions. 展开更多

In the socio-professional environment, the existence of values proves to be essential to the individual in order to live in harmony. It is by the search of oneself that you discover the world around you.Under this aspect, the philosophy of education can contribute to the conveyance of a decisive reflection on the impact of the educator’s mission on the people who are taught. On the one hand, the relativity of values puts into question their universal dimension, since they diversify in place and time according to different eras but also to different customs of each country. In this case, what is the finality of education and learning in relation to cultural diversification with regard to innovation in teaching? On the other hand, the educator’s personality plays a considerable and effective role in motivating his/her target group to seek out the higher and universal values and disseminate the principles of citizenship.Lastly, with regard to vocational training, the introduction of diversified pedagogical approaches as well as the adoption of learning strategies will enable the Educator to act in full knowledge and awareness of his action while being preoccupied in the management of the pedagogical process.His/her effective intervention will offer the opportunity to the group members to create synergies,in order to develop their unexploited potential and achieve a high level of awareness through the development of their personality. 展开更多

This paper examines Hernán Díaz’s novel Trust (2022) through the lens of cultural deconstruction, analyzing how its four nested narratives systematically dismantle the American Dream ideology. The novel Bonds and autobiography My Life collaboratively construct a financial myth portraying protagonist Andrew Bevel as an exemplar of self-made success. Subsequently, Ida’s Memoir exposes the subjective construction of history, declaring the American Dream’s bankruptcy at the epistemological level, while Mildred’s diary Futures deconstructs the myth from within by revealing that Bevel’s financial genius was built upon appropriation of his wife’s intellectual labor. This paper argues that Trust reveals the American Dream as an ideological illusion-narratively constructed, practically dependent on structural injustice, and essentially serving power reproduction. 展开更多
