Introduction Formalization of subseries/subepochs for the Paleocene to Holocene has been a long unsettled question within the International Commission on Stratigraphy(ICS).Consideration of this matter by an adhoc comm...Introduction Formalization of subseries/subepochs for the Paleocene to Holocene has been a long unsettled question within the International Commission on Stratigraphy(ICS).Consideration of this matter by an adhoc committee over the past year reached a vote that revealed that the community remains divided on the question.The purpose of this article is to summarize the discussions leading up to the vote,the results of the vote,and the implications of the vote.The publishing community desires that the question of formalization be settled;so too does the community of Paleogene,Neogene,and Quaternary stratigraphers.展开更多
The base of the Quaternary System is formally definedfor the first time at the base of the Gelasian Stage asdefined by the Global Boundary-Stratotype Section andPoint(GSSP)at San Nicola,Sicily,Italy;the PleistoceneSer...The base of the Quaternary System is formally definedfor the first time at the base of the Gelasian Stage asdefined by the Global Boundary-Stratotype Section andPoint(GSSP)at San Nicola,Sicily,Italy;the PleistoceneSeries is extended downwards to coincide with thebase the Gelasian Stage;accordingly,the GelasianStage is transferred from the Pliocene Series andNeogene System to the Pleistocene Series and QuaternarySystem.Ratification by the Executive Committee ofthe International Union of Geological Sciences(IUGS)of these recommendations from the InternationalCommission on Stratigraphy(ICS)followed establishedprocedures of extended,open discussion and deliberationof submitted proposals,and formal voting by the relevantICS Subcommissions,the ICS Voting Membership,andthe IUGS EC.They are now established as globalstandards.展开更多
