AIM: To explore the effects of radiofrequency hyperthermia on the immune function of patients with lung cancer. METHODS: Immune function of 89 cases of patients with lung cancer was assessed by means of flow cytometry before and after radiofrequency hyperthermia. RESULTS: The numbers of CD3 +,CD4 +,CD8 + and natural killer cells (NK) CD16 + decreased obviously and the number of B cells CD19 + increased significantly before radiofrequency hyperthermia [(63.32±3.06), (36.83±1.32), (23.7±15.01), (16.80±10.90), (16.30±9.81)]. After radiofrequency, the number of CD3 + (71.33±19.77),CD4 + (46.20±11.30),CD8 + (30.60±10.98) and T cells increased distinctly, close to the normal level. NK cells (20.30±8.12) and B cells (19.90±11.40), increased obviously. The ratio of CD4 +/CD8 + T cells had no difference from that of normal control before treatment, but increased sharply after treatment and [(1.63±0.53) vs (4.35± 1.89) P <0.05] and exceeded the normal range. CONCLUSION: The cellular immune function in patients with lung cancer is inhibited, especially in advanced stage, but the humoral immunity is at the hyperfunctional state. Radiofrequency hyperthermia accounts for the activation of the immune function in patients with lung cancer.
