, Four kinds of 12-node solid elements with two parallel faces and one traction-free cylindrical surface have been developed based on the assumed stress hybrid method. The various interior stress assumptions satisfy the equilibrium equations as well as the traction-free condition over the cylindrical boundary. Example problems of a rectangular plate with a circular hole, a thin square plate with a circular hole, and a square block with a circular hole are utilized to evaluate the various elements, and a desirable stress assumption has been identified. Comparisons of present results with those obtained by using 8-node special solid assumed stress hybrid elements, 8-node ordinary solid assumed stress hybrid elements and 8-node solid assumed displacement elements indicate that the present 12-node special solid element is far superior in predicting the distributions of the circumferential stresses and the stress concentration factors.
