Alice Walker's ideology of 'womanism' embodied in her fiction and prose was greatly influenced by the black power movement and the women's movement in America in the early 1970s, yet it is actually against the specific ideologies of the two movements. Womanism has become an important part of Afro-American women's liberation cause since 1980s because of its emphasis on the four particular qualities of black women's struggle: anti-sexism, anti-racism, Afracentrism and humanism.
