Through a comprehensive analysis of both the original meaning and the pronunciation of the character shi (戠) engraved on oracle-bones, this paper reveals the only solar eclipse recorded in the oracle-bone inscriptions of the Yin Dynasty discovered so far. This solar eclipse on the day of yi si (乙巳) during the reign-period of the Yin King Zu Jia (祖甲) occurred at the dawn of October 31, 1161 B. C. in the Julian calendar. The Yin people gave a fairly accurate forecast of the time of the eclipse as well as the place where it could be seen, and some of the records on the calculation of the sun's eclipse also show the eclipse obtained by the Yin people as consisting of about 54 or 18 years.
