Until recently, automotive designers who were looking for MOSFET devices had two choices open to them: either a 'simple' PowerMOShaving no protection strategies, or fully protected devices that automatically shut down if the environmental conditions move out ofspecification. However, fully protected devices with additional logic and protection circuitry come at a price. Some suppliers have beendeveloping a new kind of device that sits somewhere between the two, combining TrenchMOS technology and additional features such astemperature and current sensing elements monolithically integrated onto the chip. The benefits include the ability to protect the system andsave space without the need for expensive SMART power devices.
