This article rethinks the way Chomsky the linguist and Chomsky the political activist are related. It suggests that we see his linguistic interest in terms of a search for a solution to 'Plato's Problem' and his political interest as a search for a solution to 'Orwell's Problem.' Both 'Problems' are subsumed under a unified project to explore and construct 'human nature', and the search for their solution is predicated on the same rationalist assumptions he holds on such a 'nature.' In addition, the author also argues that Chomsky's ideas about language have been exerting a significant influence on his vision of an ideal social system.
