Greek humanism means 'Paideia', which originates from 'Sophist', but its relevant content traces back to Homer. Homer's epics display the most ideal mode of life in the heroic era: a happy life in the sunshiny world and a perfect personality revealed in complete physical and spiritual satisfaction. This satisfaction finds full expression in physical and spiritual beauty which was regarded as 'areté' in Homer's era. Paideia (humanism) helps cultivate areté. Though the Homeric humanism is the origin of Greek humanism, it is criticized by the latter because of its limitations.
