美国国立卫生研究院(National Institutes of Health,NIH)是世界上从事生命科学研究最重要的研究机构。它的年度预算占了美国政府科学投入的60%左右。显然,这样一个机构的一举一动无不对世界的科学研究,尤其是生命科学的发展有着巨大的影响。在上个世纪的分子生物学黄金时代,NIH在生命科学领域作出了显著的贡献。随着人类基因组计划的完成和后基因组时代的到来,生命科学走到了一个新的十字路口,NIH也面临着新的抉择。三个关键问题摆在了2002年新上任的院长瑞尔霍尼(E.Zerhouni)的面前:什么是当前最紧迫的挑战?
Recently, National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the US has drawn a plan how to develop biomedical sciences and clinical research, which is called NIH roadmap. In this roadmap, three main tasks were determined: constructing innovation systems on biomedicine and clinical research; building research teams of the future; developing new technology and methods for studying complex biological systems and analyzing them quantitatively.
