Now all countries in the world have concentrated their attention on the protec-tion of genetical resources. Much work has been done by the 'Committee on Animaland Plant Genetical Materials', FOA, for global preservation of geneticalresources. IBPGR has been engaged in long term development of the techniques forgenetical resources preservation in setting up a world wide network of preserves, and incarrying out technical training of the research personnel in the developingcountries. USA, former USSR, Japan. Korea, and countries in West Europe allare noted for excellent work in preservation of genetical resources. Early in Zhou andQin Dynasties in ancient China. there had been ideas on protection and rational utiliza-tion of biological and genetical resources. In 1978, AMB was organized in China. Soon-er or later a series of laws and regulations concerning biological and genetical resourcespreservation were formulated, and a related list was published. In recent years rapidprogress has been made in in-site preservation of forest genetical resources. The nature reserves throughout the country amount to 481, with a total area of 23 million ha. be-ing 2.47% of the national total. Among them the forest type nature reserves are 297.apd the wildlife type ones are 84. The total area is 14 million ha, being about 1.7% ofthe national total. However. species resources in China dwindle rapidly. Among the389 rare endangered plants pronounced by government, there are 279 being endangeredor approximately endangered.China is one of the most important countries in the worldin species protection, because of the special position she occupies in the world and thespecial environment existing there. For this reason, China should make more contribu-tion to humanity in the protction of genetical resources.
