Interest in TBLA can be attributed to such factors as the alignment of task based assessment with task based instruction, positive 'washback' effects of assessment practices on instruction, and the limitations of discrete skill assessment. However, designing a TBLA assessment is not an easy job. It raises questions of just how to design complex tasks, evaluate students performances, and draw valid conclusions therefrom. The complexities of TBLA are leading language testers to reconsider many of the fundamental issues about what we want to assess, how we go about it and what sorts of evidence we need to provide in order to justify the ways in which we use our assessments. This paper examines the major concerns in TBLA.
