It is recorded in the ancient literature that the frontier tribes in the Southeast had the obligation of yaofu (being loosely controlled) to pay tribute to the royal family in the Zhou Dynasty. It is authentic from the inscription engraved in the unearthed bronze. Furthermore, as the inscription indicates, the frontier tribes in the Southeast in the Western Zhou Dynasty not only paid tribute mainly composed of high class silk and other local products to the royal family as is recorded in the historical literature, but also paid grains and service. The latter fact is not mentioned in the historical literature. The combination of the inscription with historical literature proves that the yaofu status of the frontier tribes did exist and that such status did differ from those of the tribes in the Northwestern and the noble in the central plain in their relations to the royal family of the Zhou Dynasty.
