Thisarticleholdsthattherealproblemwithhistoricalsubjectivityisnotthattheintroductionofethicalandpo liticalstandardscanonlyoccasionagrossdistortionofwhatthepasthasactuallybeenlike .Therealproblemispreciselythere verse :historicalrealityandthehistorian’sethicalandpoliticalvaluesmayoftencomesoextremelyclosetoeachotherastobe virtuallyindistinguishable .Theauthorpointsoutthatethicalandpoliticalstandards,becauseoftheirnaturalaffinitywiththe historian’ssubject -matter ,mayoftenprovetobeahelpratherthananobstacletoabetterunderstandingofthepast.Fur thermore ,wemaysafelyassigntohistorythemostimportantandresponsibletaskoftellingapartrecommendablefromobjec tionablemoralandpoliticalvalues .Anditisthetaskthathistorycanonlyadequatelyperform .
