The destruction of the ecosystem and natural resources is a serious problem disturbing us for a long timeThis article,by presenting a brief analysis of the relationship between Chinese ancient temples and environmental protection, tries to provide some useful ideas for the current situationAs we know,Buddhism was transplanted into China around the Han dynasty and reached its heyday in the Tang Dynasty,Although declined later,it still lasted and had quite a number of believers Buddhism holds that 'each living being is equal' and forbides to 'kill life'Monks need quiet places to do religious practices and formal dhyanaThey gave special care to the living creatures because of their belief in spiritual sustenanceThey made great efforts to protect trees, grasses, and animalsThus, the surroundings of the temples were under special protection and beautification Since Buddhism came into China, it was supported and promoted by the feudal governments most of the time;they even made severe injunctions in order to guard the tranquillity and demureness of temples in the Southern and Northern DynastiesIn the Sui and Tang Dynasties, Buddhist temples dotted throughout ChinaIt is not hard to imagine that these temples serve as protection of the environment during those periodsThe achievements of Chinese ancient temples in environmental protection can be summed up in three aspects:aeffectiveness in environmental beautification, especially for cities;b protection of forests, soil and resistane against natural disasters;and cprotection of some precious animals and plants from extinction
