Objective To compare the efficacy of coronary stenting in small coronary arteries in different gender. Methods Between January 2000 and August 2002, 90 patients with stenosis of small coronary arteries were treated with 2.5 or 2.75 mm stent. According to the gender, these patients were divided into two groups, group A, 64 males and group B, 26 females. The successful rate and complication rate as well as the follow up outcomes were compared. Results Baseline clinical characteristics were similar among the two groups, except patients in group A were more likely to have hypertenstion and hypercholesterolemia than those in group B. Angiography and acute complication rates were comparable in the two groups. Follow up study revealed no significant difference in the survival or revascularization of the target vessel(35.6% vs 43.5%, P =0.50). Conclusion Intracoronary stent implantation of stenosed small coronary arteries in both genders can be carried out with similar successful rate and acceptable complication rate, and women can attain long term outcomes as well as men.
