The natural environment and social backgrounds need to be carefully analyzed in the understanding of the great tragedy Tess of the d'Urbervilles , for they are crucial in the characterization of the heroine Tess and the causation of her tragedy . And movement is one of the most important actions of Tess, evident throughout the whole novel, which contributes to Tess's being tight pressed by circumstances outward and inward, and finally concludes her short life .
