The determination of nickel concentration in the air of workerplaces and the measurement of nickel content in workers' finger nails were carried out in a nickel smeltery.According to the hygienic characteristics and production process the samples were divided into three groups; ore comminution-mould pressing, electric furnace-converter, and auto-repairing.The geometric means of air nickel in these groups were 0.0978, 0.0623 and 0.0202 mg/m3 respectively; the geometric means of nickel content in workers' finger nails were 23.04, 21.07 and 4.84μg/g respectively. Results showed that a certain exposure-response relationship appeared between the contents in the air and those in nails. Therefore, the nickel content in finger nails might be valuable, to be used as an index for biological monitoring in occupational environment.
