Audio and video materials are important sources of information for scholarly needs, and are often primary sources for disciplines such as arts, social sciences, and business studies. As library users increasingly expect to access AV resources over the WWW, developing digital AV based multimedia collections, and finding effective ways to deliver them over the Internet have become the top priority for digital libraries. Besides collection development, multimedia technologies have also opened up new opportunities for provision of library services on the Internet. For example, digital video of library orientation and bibliographic instruction classes can be streamed or even webcasted over the Internet. This paper presents how Lingnan University Library has developed its online multimedia collections and pioneered the use of multimedia on demand (MOD) technologies in Hong Kong to deliver digital library services over the Internet. The paper concludes that the impact of multimedia on digital libraries can never be overestimated, and to cope with users' increasing expectations of accessing multimedia resources online, collaborations among libraries are necessary.
