It has been found that many industrial chemicals present in the environment have adverse effects on the endocrine systems in humans and wild animals. Among the tens of endocrine disrupting chemicals ( EDCs) identified so far, alkylphenols (including 4-nonylphenol and 4-t-octylphenol), bisphenol A and 2,4-dichlorophenol are often studied as a group of phenolic environmental estrogens due to their structural and estrogenic similarities. In this paper, the main sources, weak estrogenic property and analytical methods for these substances in the environment were reviewed based on 54 literatures. Some newly developed techniques such as Matrix Solid-Phase Dispersion( MSPD), molecular imprinted, polymer(MIP), fluorescence molecular sensing(FMS)and combination of biological recognition and chemical analysis were overviewed for their application in the analysis of above mentioned substances. The advantages and limitations of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry used for the determination of phenolic environmental estrogens were summarized. The trend for the future research in this field was also briefly discussed.
