To explore the evolution of the Ding and its role in the history and culture of furniture, the authors conducted a study of unearthed cultural relics and historical documents, analyzing and elaborating on five aspects:origin, production materials, shape, decoration, and use.The Ding originated in the Neolithic Age and was initially used as a cooker for cooking food. The early form of the tripod was the pottery tripod, developed from the pottery kettle with a round shape. As productivity increased, people began to cast tripods out of bronze, which was heavier, conducted heat well, and had ears attached to facilitate movement. The Ding gradually evolved into an important ritual vessel during the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, transitioning from cooking food to being used for sacrifice and feasting.Culturally, the Ding symbolized power and honor.According to legend,Da Yu collected bronze and cast nine tripods to represent Kyushu, making the tripod a symbol of royal power. This later extended to a the system of tripods reflecting the patriarchal system and the concept of hierarchy, highlighting the growing symbolic significance of the tripod. As one of the origins of cooking utensils in household products, the Ding has become a special symbol in Chinese culture.Although its form and function continue to evolve and its practical value gradually diminishes, its cultural significance remains profound.
