The Marco Millions is a work by the famous American playwright Eugene O’Neill, which tells the story of the 13th to 14th-century Venetian merchant Marco Polo’s visit to China and his service in the Yuan dynasty court for over a decade. The play incorporates various Oriental images, particularly those of the Great Khan Kublai and other Chinese figures. The depictions of these figures in O’Neill’s work are characterized by both Utopian idealization and Western ideology, which makes the Chinese images in this work embrace a sort of duality.Through the construction of the“Other,”Western culture reflects an idealized“Other”while simultaneously exposing deep-seated anxieties and stereotypes. This paper approaches the Chinese imagery in the Marco Millions from the perspective of imagology, analyzing both the history of the Western representation of China and O’Neill’s personal beliefs. It aims to reveal the historical and cultural background of the construction of the“Other”in Western culture and explore the causes of this duality. The study seeks to provide a new perspective for a more objective understanding of the Chinese elements in Western culture.
